I want in! Give me a fandom (or more than one) and I'll tell you:

Character I'd let hang from a cliff
Character I'd frak or make-out with
Character I'd marry
Character I'd wrap a blanket around
5 favorite characters
3 OTPs
Funniest character
Prettiest character
Most bad-ass character
Character I'd like as my BFF

Decision-making is not my strong suit. Be forewarned.

Not in the vidding game anymore (except for in my dreams) but has anyone noticed YT vids cropping up using GIFs from tumblr instead of actual video clips? People are always discovering new ways to celebrate their fandoms, so yay to that. (x1000) But I just don't know what I think about it. It's not really "clip theft" in the traditional sense (stealing/ripping sequences directly from another's vid). I'd actually argue it's vastly different from that and... Maybe more acceptable? I mean it fits the definition of transformative. I actually remember thinking, back when GIF popularity was on the rise, that they were almost like mini vids in a way without the music. Now it's come full-ish circle.

Explain to me, oh ye goddesses of fandom!

Some of the dearest people to me use words that I just don't understand.

I feel like everyone's using the expression "whelmed" these days. But I just don't know how to take it. I mean, I am a complete nerd, and of course I looked it up in the thesaurus. It lists "overwhelm" as a synonym for "whelm." And it lists "underwhelm" as an antonym. This was my suspicion all along, based on my own personal knowledge of the English language, but I don't know how to tell when someone in fandom is using it for "overwhelm" or if they're using it ironically for "underwhelm." Sometimes by the context, I feel like it's one way. Sometimes I feel like it's the other way. And sometimes I just can't tell at all.

I mean maybe it always means "underwhelmed" in the same way that "the worst" seems to almost always mean "the best."

I am so confused! We live in a backward world, my friends. And we also clearly need to get a fandom-specific dictionary. Can someone do that for me? Thanks.

→ You know what I don't understand? Fandom. I may or may not be talking about something specific here. [Hmm.] I just feel a lot of posturing and pretense going on in a lot of places. You know when you were a kid and you wanted to be the first one on the block to have the newest Nickelodeon toy [or whatever]? It's kind of like that. Only now, in fandom, we want to be the most enlightened, the most forward-thinking, the one who really "gets it" -- etc. But you know? I don't know if people actually get it. Something about the way fandom behaves at times like this, and yes, individuals within fandom, just seems so fake to me. When there are canned phrases that everybody seems to be repeating ad nauseum, it makes me question the authenticity of those spouting them. It all just feels so rehearsed and because of it, what they're really telling me is, "this is what I'm supposed to say, so I'm saying it." I'm not sure that people are as enlightened as they pretend to be. Or maybe they are, but their reactions don't really reflect how they feel or what they really would like to say. [Nevermind what they understand.] Maybe the sentiment is somewhat authentic, but the handling of it, the wording, whatever, just feels so formulaic and disingenuous. And okay, well what's new? These are human beings we're talking about. But still. Fandom? Why so serious?

→ An ETA: to the above. I understand that there are important discussions to be had and serious issues to deal with, but let's leave a little room for, I don't know, humanness and compassion and for people to make mistakes without having to adopt some false Stepford personality after the fact.

Sorry all of this is so vague.

→ I also don't get when people don't e-mail you back. I mean just in general. Not even related to anybody or anything specific. My e-mails are not forwards. Why do my friends sometimes treat them like ignorable garbage? I would really like to know what causes this type of behavior. That's like saying hello to a close friend in the hall as you pass by and they don't even wave back. Come on, folks. Give me a wave!

[I won't say I've never forgotten to respond to an e-mail or taken too long, but at least I try not to make a habit out of it. What gives?]

→ Keep calm and carry on. ← That? Right there? That's a period. As in "the end." As in "STOP." Don't make me hate this phrase, people. Resist the urge. I beg of you.

→ I'm sure I'll have a more cheerful post later.

WHAT IS THIS? Why does the Lost fandom suddenly seem a whole lot less friendly than it ever has? I don't know if it's someone I know who complained, or if it's several people, or just one. But I do not understand the attitude. So, it's not how you would do things? So, it's not how every comm everywhere is run? [I wasn't aware there was a model people were supposed to be following!] So, she was excited and friendly and open? Well excuse me for asking, but what the hell is wrong with that? I just don't get it. How hard is it to just be glad that someone cares that much? Especially after the show is over and done with?

Please explain this to me.

Won't be long until there's nobody to play in the sandbox with us anymore. Then we'll really have something to complain about.

It's amazing to me how often this video is recurringly relevant.

With that being said, I would hope that anybody having these types of conversations can muster at least a modicum of the tact that this man possesses. And if they can't, they should back away slowly. We'll all be better off.

So.

Damn.

Conflicted.

Voted for V. for the time being, just because she's losing.
There is no doubt in my mind that these ladies should be the final two. Unfair.

→ The choreography on the bed in this Shakira video is awesome. [livejournal.com profile] flutter_girl posted it. It's symbolic and fresh and just darn pretty to watch:

→ I thought about not signing up for [livejournal.com profile] lostsquee's Lost HoHoHo! this year due to my non-productivity these days, but I'm sure I'll be able to write something. You should sign up if you get the chance! ♥

→ Speaking of writing, I'm feeling really optimistic about this week. But I need to stop making promises about it because seriously, it just never ends well.

→ I'm not ignoring that last post. I'm just thinking really hard about it all. And I do appreciate all of your input. I will try to get to responding to that soon.

→ Hope everyone had a spooky Halloween!
