I find fanfic more fulfilling than icon making as well. It is all about the storytelling for me as well. Creating something to get a reaction. And I agree that I'd much rather one heartful comment than 100 "great fic" ones. Not that I don't appreciate those but the ones that mean so much to me at the end of the day are the ones that took a minute or two to write.
