big big love
Does anybody watch Big Love? I didn't realize the second season had premiered until today and so I immediately watched the episode on onDemand. Review behind the cut.
1. The fact that Joey is clearly going to be in Roman's pocket now to protect Wanda will be interesting. Joey is just an all around good guy, and it's sad to see him have to do this, especially because it's clear from s1 that he wants nothing to do with this lifestyle. But Roman having him in such a position will certainly present some interesting sibling rivalry between Bill and Joey. Also, I wouldn't put it past Joey at all to completely take the fall for Wanda in order to protect Bill, because no doubt Roman has something new up his sleeves for the Hendrickson's as always.
2. I don't think the school knows! Maybe I'm just being naive, but when that teacher asked if Barb was going to return to teaching, I honestly think she meant it! Barb was very paranoid in this episode, but that worked. I honestly honestly thought she was going to get into that car at the end, and plotwise, I think it would have been an incredibly interesting season/story arc interesting if she had.
3. This wasn't in the premiere, but with the swing scene on the promos with Ben and Margene, I think that something is going to happen between those two this season. There was a little bit of hinting, in season one. They seemed to share something. He went to her and they shared some secrets and he encouraged her. But there were also a couple episodes where they were just physically close. Now at first I thought it meant something, but as the season went on, and Margene's dedication to Bill and the family was made more and more clear, I just figured it was a way of showing how Margene really is so young and naive compared to Barb and Nikki. That she wouldn't even think that these kinds of PDAs would be inappropriate, just natural. But when I saw that promo for the second season, it really really looked like they were alluding to something happening between her and Ben this season. I could be way off base, and Ben was certainly blink-and-you-missed-him in the premiere.
4. Speaking of Margene. The scene when she's alone on the phone with Barb and Barb tells her she's not coming back and Margene tells her she can't be married to Nikki and Bill if she's not married to Barb too. O. M. G. She breaks me! Ginnifer Goodwin is stellar. When she cries, I cry. I remember last year when she "broke up" with the couple across the street and she walks away crying. Oh crap, I died. The phone scene was much more subtle, but she just looked so heartbroken. Margene is definitely my favorite of the sister wives.
5. Something's gonna happen with Sarah and that support group dude. I'm curious as to whether or not Sarah's going to try to leave the family this year. She knows they would never pressure her into that lifestyle and she seems to be really supportive of the family in general. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough last season, but the whole support-group session just seemed out of left feild. I wouldn't have expected that of Sarah.
6. One person I really wanted to see and didn't was Rhonda. I hope they don't drop the ball on that storyline. I'm sure it will come into play eventually. I think Rhonda might be the key to getting Roman off their backs.
7. Nikki. Oh, girl. She's such a great character because you want to hate her but you really can't. Because at the end of the day, despite all of her selfishness and coldness, she really does have the family's best interests at heart. And, as Holly Golightly, she really believes all the crazy shit that she believes. Though I must admit that I don't love her sitting in Barb's place and assuming the role of first wife, or assuming that Bill would ever make her first wife, because I don't think that would ever happen. She would definitely use that title so suit her own purposes, whereas I think Barb is much more diplomatic and mature than Nikki would ever have the ability to be.
8. Bill was so satisfied when he legally pressured Wendy into backing off. It was a genius way to do it too. He's absolutely right about all of it. And Wendy certainly can't afford it. But I think Nikki & her mother really fucked that up with the whole gag with the Hummer. Wendy will be pissed, and there'll be hell to pay.
9. Okay so much happened in this episode that I feel like I've rambled on forever and yet I still haven't covered everything that happened. God, I love this show.
Edit: One of the promos in question here.
