Yea there were many moments in the book where I was like, "Fuck you Gale for making me like you so much. You selfless bastard!" Him bringing Prim and mom down to the shelter when Katniss had forgotten, and then him volunteering to get Peeta. Selfless perfect man is perfect.

Dude Hunger Games is wide open for many many gross interpretations. Too many hot kickass characters in that book.
