I amuse so easily!
Okay, okay. I know I am pretty much out of the Supernatural fandom these days. But I found this quote from this buddytv.com article very amusing.
Yeah.
ETA: SPN casting spoilers in comments.
"We often say that Supernatural is, at heart, a love story between Sam and Dean."
- Cathryn Humphris, Supernatural writer (Dead Man's Blood, The Usual Suspects, Born Under a Bad Sign, Bedtime Stories, & Dream a Little Dream of Me
Yeah.

I'm just a bit surprised to hear one of the writers say that in an interview. Of course, after about a paragraph's worth of that she says, and I paraphrase, "but obviously they are still men and want to bang many women...[not each other]"

You might get your wish. I've read articles talking about how the CW is on very thin ice and may be on their last legs.
The problem with the CW is that they're trying way too hard to be ABC, CBS, NBC or even FOX. That's just not going to happen. Nothing on networks like this gets high ratings, awards, or critical acclaim (but that more than the other two). They're operating with the "big network" mindset and it just doesn't work. FOX made it work but they're a lone wolf in that department.
(IMO, the WB could have stuck it out, stupid merge.)
If they're not on a major network, the only shows that last, that are quality made, that get critical acclaim or get decent/steady ratings are on stations like F/X (the sheild, nip/tuck, rescue me), USA (monk, psych), SciFi even (bsg, etc.), and pay cable networks like showtime and hbo.
CW is floundering because they haven't the money of the major networks, and yet aren't willing to shelter their shows like Fox did at first and even the WB did at first (I can't speak for UPN). And they've certainly got none of the respectibility of the cable niche stations.
As for the spoiler you're referring to. I'll edit my post to say spoilers in comments and then come back to discuss it further, lol.

All the networks just need to get a grip and realize people aren't watching TV as much anymore. Until they figure out how to rework the system so everything isn't dependent on Nielsens for ad money, they are all heading for big trouble. Which sucks, cause I still like SPN and wouldn't want the CW to go away. :\

It's hard for fans to swallow characters that don't seem organic to the story.

And if you keep getting rid of them every single season then they will never have time to grow a little... or get better. They only seem able to write the same two types of charcaters... the kick ass girl or the damsel in distress... and I hate both of them. Buh!
I'm very glad we got rid of Bela (but what kind of a name is that?) because she hurt my nerves... but Ruby... I think they could have made her work if they had tried a little harder. Joe unfortunately was bad too... I liked her just in one ep when the guys got to save her ass... in the other ones everything she did was so obvious and lame and annoying! But still that doesn't justify to me the way she was thrown out... and don't even make me start with pour Ellen. Can't they just have a little faith in their own characters?
And all the boys "girlfriends" were awful too... the only one I really liked was Layla from Faith... but that's probably because of the lovely actress...

My respect for Kripke drops lower every day, if that's even possible. I get that this show is about these two guys and their... bond or wtf-ever, but more and more that seems to be the only common thread the show clings to from season to season... or even episode to episode. There's no real consistency in quality or side characters or anything. A car and two dudes who might be related, or might be fucking, or might be both. (Oh, and some scary/gory things.)
I don't think they've ever done a fantastic job writing women. Even Jo, who I really liked and find more interesting than Ruby, btw, wasn't that well done. I have to refrain from laughing my head off when people talk about how well-done Jessica and even Mary are. I do not see it. They are props, just like most women on that show with the BIG exception of Ellen. Mary, the sympathetic mom prop. Jessica, the sympathetic girlfriend prop.
They've done a handful of guest stars well, Ava, the chick from Asylum, the chick from Wendigo, Missouri, the demon Kasey, the cop from the Benders, and a handful of others I'm not remembering. But the problem is that they are only there for the blink of an eye. (A lot of people seemed to like Sarah, Meg, Madison, and that Lisa chick, but I don't like them at all, *shrug*)
It's not just that this show writes/kills off every woman who has even a chance of becomming recurring, it's that the show is practically incapable of writing them in the first place.
I really liked Ruby because of the mythology that came with her character. I wasn't ever in love with her acting, but we'll just say she was on par with Jared and Jensen in that way.
(ETA: And I don't actually believe they kill off/write off all women because the showrunners don't want to deviate from the story of the brothers by bringing in extra players. I think it's because it's easy. Who knows how Bobby is still around. Maybe they'll write him off due to "bugetary" reasons as well.)
