WHAT IS THIS? Why does the Lost fandom suddenly seem a whole lot less friendly than it ever has? I don't know if it's someone I know who complained, or if it's several people, or just one. But I do not understand the attitude. So, it's not how you would do things? So, it's not how every comm everywhere is run? [I wasn't aware there was a model people were supposed to be following!] So, she was excited and friendly and open? Well excuse me for asking, but what the hell is wrong with that? I just don't get it. How hard is it to just be glad that someone cares that much? Especially after the show is over and done with?

Please explain this to me.

Won't be long until there's nobody to play in the sandbox with us anymore. Then we'll really have something to complain about.

I was shocked that someone complained too! I have never seen anything wrong with the way she was running that community. She's a really good, involved mod. I don't know who this person is who complained, but I couldn't disagree with them more.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose I can understand how her style could come across as different. But first of all, she's new. And second of all, what's the big deal? She was cleaning things up and doing what was needed and that's all anybody should really care about, in my opinion.

[identity profile] eponine119.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
WTF, Lost fandom? This group of people has always been excellent...what happened to change that lately?

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't have a clue. I hope it won't become a trend.

[identity profile] ageless-aislynn.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's restrained to just one fandom, sad to say. I've seen comms implode, explode or a combo of both over the fact that somebody or several somebodies Don't Like The Way You Just Did That And They Would've Done It Differently So That Means You're Wrong. :( I've also been on the receiving end of that one and it's definitely not fun. I really feel for her because it's hard to keep your enthusiasm up when you were all happy-go-lucky and then you get poked with the Sharp Stick Of You Suck And I'd Do It So Much Better Than You. :(

Can't we just all eat cookies and have fun together? :(

:) ♥

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate that about fandom. SO much. *munches cookies*

No really. I had to go get some after you said that. LOL.

That stick hurts. Believe me, I know.

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
WTF? I'll admit that I don't hang around that comm much because I'm in for the slash and it isn't on there but it didn't seem to me like she was doing anything wrong. O__O wtf is that? I just hope it's a fluke or something. :/

[identity profile] weatheredlaw.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You should hang around more! I always thought the non-slash thing was weird, so I changed that. XDD Slash is totally welcome now. And considering there was no mod to police it, it's actually been on there for a while. XDD

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
... LOL, go me for not hanging around because there wasn't the slash and now I find out THAT THERE WAS THE SLASH? Ah well, good to know. I most definitely will now. XDDDDD

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I ♥ your icon.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just going to say that about the slash but she beat me to it.

I'm crossing my fingers for a fluke.

[identity profile] cynthia-arrow.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been a long fucking time since Lost fandom was dragged down with petty wnk and epic bitch-fights like some other fandom (I'm talking years here). I hope to god we're not headed down that road again. *sigh*

[identity profile] weatheredlaw.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't intend to fight with anyone. The person who complained and I are totally cool.

[identity profile] cynthia-arrow.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No, dude, I totally wasn't putting any of that on you. I know how one wacky person can drag something down, but I didn't at all think that person was you. :)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope not too. I just do not get why people feel the need to complain about petty shit like this. I understand if a mod is posting like gigantic novellas/lists outside of a cut or something. [That's just annoying and must be stopped!] But this? It's just, whut? Take a chill pill fandom. Don't make us protect you from yourselves!

[identity profile] colourmayfade.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I saw that earlier. It struck me as odd that someone complained about the advertisement posts, because we've had those since forever and what's the difference between a mod and a member advertising, really? It's a silly complaint.

But I'll say that I don't necessarily disagree - there was one post, about the mod going on vacation I think, which hit me a little bit that way. I run the general community for Gilmore Girls fic and though it's nowhere as active as that one, I know that these fanfic communities pretty much run themselves. But I just figured that she was a new mod making some changes to the tags and whatnot, so it didn't bother me at all. I can see why it could have bothered someone, though.

It just sucks that whoever complained seems to have done it in a way that made the girl feel bad. She's very involved and trying to make some changes for the best, there's nothing wrong with that.

I used to watch from the sidelines before, but I feel like the fandom changed a lot since the last season started. Maybe it's that the very old members kind of fell out of it and new people came in, idk.

[identity profile] weatheredlaw.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you caught that I made that post because of the tags. I had literally just taken over two days before and I just wanted to let everyone know that I wasn't going to vanish right after starting things up again. :)

[identity profile] colourmayfade.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, I get it. Like I said, it's not the way I do things in any of the communities I run but you want to be more involved, and that's not bad at all. I guess you just have to figure out what works for you as well as the members of the comm. For what it's worth, I'm glad someone fixed those tags! :)

Oh, and I hope whoever complained wasn't rude to you! I didn't get that at all from the advertisement thing.
ext_438634: purple photo of a doe, in the woods (Default)

[identity profile] weatheredlaw.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they weren't rude. It's just a little petty to me, but I can see why me advertising comms I run or am a part of might come off a bit odd. I was asked to pimp them so I did. I'd pimp a stranger's comm, too. XDD

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why members should be able to advertise a community but a mod can't. I'm all about peace and being hospitable and helpful and accomodating and whatnot. But as it is, you're the gal in charge! So it seems a bit backwards to me.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I understand the idea of saying she was being overly personal -- but at the same time it seemed like she was being informative? Which... I see has been covered below.

I didn't think the complaint was all about the community advertisement, because there was definitely nothing "personal" about those. Because of that, I presumed that the complaint, while it may have mentioned the comm advertisement, was probably talking about her "overall" mod style. Which just.. why? Why does it matter? I don't think it does. I mean, somebody being too nice? Haha. That's hardly a thing to complain about. Too mean on the other hand, is entirely different.

lol, I hope there isn't such a thing as being too nice! I haven't seen too much wank from this fandom, aside from the ship wars and overall disappointment in these last couple of seasons. I just hope that doesn't change now.

-sidles in-

Guh. I never meant for anything to come off this way at all. I really DO NOT intend to be any less friendly, I'm just not going to advertise. :/ I don't want to run anyone off and it's been a community for a while. All I wanted to do was clean it up and make it easier to find things is all. I just wanted to be a more connected mod.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think being more connected is really just a positive thing. I think you've accomplished the goals you set out to do and are doing a fine job. It's just disappointing that not everyone can appreciate that instead of focusing on the things that don't matter.

[identity profile] cloudytea.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with all of the above. I think it's awesome to have a mod who is willing to let us know when she's gonna be gone, or whatever. It really cuts out the formality of the whole thing, which (I thought) makes it much more comfortable for a lot of people.

But that's just me. :-)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess it did seem to come down to formality versus friendliness. And that's really a silly thing to focus on, imo. You've got someone who's making things better and you're gonna berate her for her methods? Just... no.

[identity profile] angela-weber.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I just saw that and I'm kind of bewildered. I love this fandom and I would hate to see more instances like this one popping up.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm right there with you on both accounts.

[identity profile] missy-useless.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with all of this. I was bewildered, too. And what I really do not get at all: why should a regular member have more rights - to pimp other communities, for example - than a mod? Shouldn't it be the other way around (if it is necessary to make a distinction)?

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the other way around for sure. Very, very backwards indeed.

[identity profile] kools-pad.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get it. I mean, any of it. I'm guessing this is a LJ ethics dilemma.

Isn't Lost over? Why are people still getting worked up about it? I think the reason I liked the finale was that the context of the ending finalized the story part. Effectively shutting up the wackjobs of that fandom. It may not have been intelligent sci-fi but it did seem like Darlton was saying 'stfu this is it'

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-24 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
All this is about is that somebody took over an abandoned livejournal community [abandoned by the mods, not the members] and tried to update the tags and do some "housekeeping" if you will and instead of being grateful, someone complained because she was being "too personal" [or too friendly? idk.]

[identity profile] kools-pad.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the point of lj was to be personal in an impersonal setting.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I don't know if I'd put it that way. But something like that.

[identity profile] tellshannon815.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why someone would have complained - I certainly never saw any reason to!

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Me either.
