tv = life?

The end of stuff.

Community. I don't know. I just don't know. I enjoyed the two part finale kinda but I feel like overall my feelings on this season are so underwhelming that it's hard for me to even care. I feel like this has the potential to become something I don't watch regularly, but at the same time, I don't feel strongly enough about that to remove it from the DVR entirely.

Modern Family. Love those Dunphy-Pritchett-Tucker-Delgados! Yes! But has my enthusiasm waned? Yes. I can't explain why but I don't get excited for this show anymore. And yet I still love it when I do watch it. But I frequently miss several episodes in a row without even realizing it and mostly that's just because I don't even remember that it's on. The show isn't doing anything wrong, but I don't know. It's more like "old reliable" instead of "this exciting thing that I can't wait for!" That probably makes very little sense. Just go with it.

Off the Map. Well, that got canceled. That sucks. Since it was just a mid-season replacement I'm not so totally bummed about losing it, but it would have been nice to see how it did a little further along. Oh well, them's the breaks.

The Vampire Diaries. You're all aware that this is my new "main" fandom. While I have some powerful "multi-fandom" tendencies, there are always things that inspire me more than others in terms of making art or writing fic or gee, I dunno, stalking the cast on twitter, etc. And this is one of them, which took nobody more by surprise than me. I figured out that I started watching this show after the first few eps of the second season. Right around Bad Moon Rising, 2.03 -- I have no idea how long it took me to catch up. I'm guessing a couple of weeks, but it's kind of been this massive downhill slide into obsession from there. And I'm only mentioning this here because I've already talked about the finale. I pretty much agree with about 80-85% of what [livejournal.com profile] ozmissage said in her finale recap, and she said it far better than I did, so go read that if you have the chance.

Parenthood. This show is so under-rated. I can't believe how under-rated it is. There are times when the storylines are not my favorite, but the writing on this show is so superb and real and you see scenes on this show that I don't know if I've ever seen before, and yet they're so completely simple. Not everything on this show is as affecting, but some of it just blows me away with it subtle power. And I'm so so glad it was renewed for a third season. Here's one of my favorite parts of the finale:

"Amber, you know, I was two years in Vietnam. Do you know what I thought about? What I dreamt about? Coming home and having a family and having grandkids. I dreamt you, Amber. And Haddie, and Drew, and Sydney, Jabbar, and Max. And we almost lost you. I know, you've had some bad breaks. You're not feeling good about yourself. You didn't get into Berkeley? Well, boo-friggin-hoo. You gotta suck it up, girl. You're a Braverman. You got my blood in your veins. You ever do something like this again, you even think about doing something like this, I will personally kick your little butt all the way from here to the Golden Gate Bridge. You do not have my permission to mess with my dreams. Are we clear?"

Happy Endings. I don't know how much of this show is left to air? Maybe one episode? But this was such an unexpected delight! Seriously? How awesome is this show? I can't say they'll work that same awesome groove next season, but right now it is on fire. (Though the last two eps were definitely aired out of order, yes?)

Grey's Anatomy. I... I don't know with this show. I hate to hope for anything with it because the characters I want to see fleshed out never really are. And I'm looking at you Lexie Grey. (No really, she has so many things going on every season that it feels like they just scratch the surface and we don't really get to see what's underneath.) But I guess there's one thing. I feel pretty confident that April is going to be fleshed out more next season because of the whole Chief Resident thing. I don't know why I was so surprised to see that decision after all of the "protocol" griping. Probably because of her previous malpractice foible. But I also should say that I really like April a lot and that her coming back to the show after that is probably one of the best decisions I think they've ever made. I don't have any clue as to whether or not she was always intended to come back or not, but if not, I'm glad they changed their minds.

(And like Lexie, April's Mercy West counterpart, Jackson, needs some serious development.)

I feel like there are so many characters on this show that half of them just spend the vast majority of the time hanging out in the background, having these lives that we really know very little about. I mean, watching people brush their teeth together is one thing, but actual development is something else. I am kind of bummed that we are not getting that for some of these characters. The cast has grown so much and I feel like, even though I enjoy some of the new faces, that it's a detriment to the show in the end. I mean, I'm super stoked that "Noel" finally got the girl and all, but I would have liked to see that develop more. But with this show, that just doesn't seem possible anymore.

The Killing. I'm behind! again! I do this every week and it's not because I'm not interested. Really. It's just because I don't get the TV on the weekends and then I have to make myself remember to download the show and watch it. I need a personal assistant just to keep track of my television schedule during the regular season. I swear.

Summer shows! Summer is such a slow time for me TV-wise. I'm looking forward to Haven, True Blood, Entourage, and The Glades (off the top of my head) but I'm not jumping out of my seat for joy or anything. I think that may change from ep to ep with both True Blood and Haven though. (Both of the genre pieces, go figure.) But both Lost Girl and Misfits aren't coming back until the fall, so it'll be a relatively quiet summer I guess. Though I may be re-watching Veronica Mars again to make a vid, and The Vampire Diaries just cause, and I hope to knock out the next season or two of The West Wing as well. So there's that. Plus, I may finally give Castle a try (since a friend let me borrow the season one DVD I got them for Christmas) and finally mainline Six Feet Under like I've been meaning to. (At least season one. It's taunting me from my DVD shelf.) "The show where no one smiles" is what I used to nickname it back when my mom watched when it was still on the air.

☂ Does anybody else know what else I watch/am watching? I can't think of anything else. This is what happens when you make long lists.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The Killing is rather awesome though it's not something I plan my schedule around. I just watch it on OnDemand whenever I get the time. Same for Community & Grey's Anatomy, of which I haven't seen the finale yet but...IDK...I'm in no rush with that one.

You watch Lost Girl & Misfits? Awesome! I knew Misfits wasn't coming back until the fall but I didn't know about Lost Girl. Bummer.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I am really excited to see how it all unravels. I feel like we should know more than we do at this point but they keep throwing me.

Yep I do! According to wiki the 2nd season of Lost Girl is supposed to start in the fall but it doesn't give a date or anything. Maybe it'll be sooner rather than later.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really understand anything yet but I'm still invested? Part of me wonders if the casting choices matter because there are two actor who almost always play the villains/killer and it makes me very suspicious of them. But then maybe that's what the writers want us to think? IDK...It's a very good show, though :)

I liked the first half of the season much more than the latter but I still want my Bo & Kenzi & Lauren fix, ASAP :D

It sounds like whispering kids or giggling elves. Did you bring home elves last night? Not judging.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Callum? And who else? (I'm guessing on Callum.)

I liked the whole season and especially loved the ending. The the way they left us with the cliffhanger about Trick. (Who I just LOVE.) I can pretty much do without Lauren though, and am secretly hoping her role is small this year. Kenzi is my absolute favorite! She's so.... KENZI. I don't know how to describe her. She's totally what made me fall for the show. But I very much root for Bo, too. Their BFFness is my 2nd favorite thing on the show... next to Kenzi. Haha.

I need to go re-watch Arachnofaebia. I love that episode so much!

"Kenzi! We are trapped in this tomb of a house by a giant freakin' spider! Do you think you can tape this?"

Re: It sounds like whispering kids or giggling elves. Did you bring home elves last night? Not judgi

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Callum & Billy Campbell. Callum is definitely the creepier of the two but Billy gives off this air of untrustworthiness that makes me very suspicious of Darren.

Aw, Lauren's actually my favorite. IDK why but I always tend to love characters like her, who seem sort of cold and detached on the outside and you're not really sure if you can trust her. I find that fascinating. I also adore Kenzi and like Bo a good deal. Hale is also awesome but I go back and forth on Dyson & Trick.

[identity profile] blighted-star.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
With TVD - maybe it's better to watch the show straight through once a season is over? I know it's a long time to wait, but sometimes having to wait for an episode every week really takes (me) out of it. The excitement is less. I watched s1 and the beginning of s2 up to 2x11 straight through, and I LOVED it. Then it returned after a mini break and being all caught up was less fun.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You know I don't know. By downhill slide I meant more like, in terms of my fandom love for it, it snowballed and has grown to 10x its original size once it hit the bottom of the mountain, lol.

For me it's so torturous waiting even a week for a new episode. I was pretty thrilled about all but a few episodes even when watching as it airs. Because like I said, I started watching just after 2.03 and caught up within a couple of weeks, and have been watching week-to-week every ep since.

I'd say the Dinner Party, The House Guest, Know Thy Enemy, and The Last Dance were the only episodes I felt kind of "meh" about. But other than that, I was happy and excited after every ep!

Do you mean like fans of the show are batshit? I stay away from certain places like Twitter or even communities on LJ, so my mood isn't ruined by them.

That's so funny b/c The Dinner Party and The House Guest were two of my favorite episodes this season. :)

I did watch Upfront videos of Paul and Ian, and they said the writers are happy to have all the mythology/moonstone stuff behind them, so now they can get to all the action. I am holding them to their promise.

[identity profile] gigglemonster.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm SO thrilled about Happy Endings. I'm so glad you had me watch it with you that one night. I'm shocked at how incredibly hilarious it is. But yeah the Barefoot Pedler one definitely felt like it should have come earlier.
But oh man, Max and Penny are hilarious. By far my favorites on the show. Oddly enough, the two main characters (Alex and Dave) are the ones I find least interesting. They kinda remind me of S1 Ted on How I Met Your Mother. Like they spent so much time giving the supporting cast quirky/funny personalities that they forgot about the main one/s lol. But I digress. It's a great show!

I hope you do decide to catch up a little on The West Wing. I'd love to discuss that show with you ;)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I apologize for torturing you with awesome television. ;) When I briefly watched that show (I think it was in its third season) Ted was actually my favorite. I don't have any particular problems with Alex and Dave. Max and Penny are definitely favorites, and the other four are just kind of slightly less awesome. (IMO.)

I don't really have anything to say about The West Wing aside from maybe quoting it at you. Haha.

[identity profile] gigglemonster.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
lol I know right? West Wing is one of those rare shows that's like so awesome that there's not much to talk about aside from how perfect it is ;)

[identity profile] later-tuesday.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Misfits and Lost Girl already got votes (and are AMAZING) so I'm going to say Rookie Blue, Murdoch Mysteries and catching up on Nikita if you're not already watching them.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not currently watching Nikita. I was willing to give it a shot and saw like 5 minutes of an episode and kind of had to turn it off. It was either not a good idea to just pick a random episode to "sample" the goods, or it may not be the show for me.

Lost Girl and Misfits are already on my schedule babe!
Edited 2011-05-20 22:52 (UTC)

[identity profile] later-tuesday.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Nikita took awhile to 'work' for me, but after the women's relationships began to take form it got better. If you like a show that passes the Bechdel test it gets good (although I'm worried for next season).

It's also pretty dependent on you having seen all previous episodes to get what's going on. I think it might be good to watch in order back to back.

Misfits has a bit of a raunchier side, I think I should warn you, but it's brillant &heart; my new favourite show.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I actually watched the old Nikita on USA a bit a long time ago so I kind of know the gist of the story. Or at least the overall set-up. I'll have to reconsider it.

[identity profile] later-tuesday.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I watched that one too, this is definitly a different show. She's not in Division anymore, for starters. She's working from the outside to bring it down, and Alex is an entirely new character. Percy is more an outright bastard, whereas in the old one he was more shades of grey heading for evil?

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ah it sounds like it must be a "sort of" sequel? Cool.

[identity profile] hypertwink.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
For a season that was getting back part of it's old groove back, I'm a little surprised at how I didn't like this season-ender. I'm a little meh about it. Maybe, part of it is that I wanted Alex to be in a good place for next year. Whatever.

I'm falling a little out of love with The Killing. Although I still love Holder.

Happy EndingsFTW! MaxFTW! I hope Max Greenfield/Ian comes back!

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like Alex is going to have some good things coming to him. He's such a different character than he used to be and it's totally obvious that he has earned the respect of his colleagues in a way that he never has before. Next season, Meredith had better admit that she was the one who screwed up and not him. Maybe it's just me, and maybe this catch-phrase should die, but I predict the next season to be the season of Alex WINNING.

lol.

I'm not caught up so I'm reserving judgement. It's such a slow build but I'm holding out hope that the last few eps are going to be shocking and awesome.

Right? It's such a good show!

[identity profile] hypertwink.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
About Community, I'm still on the train but I want something more but I can't define what I want. Magic...I want to be enchanted with Community like the first season, not just in like with it. Like the D&D episode. LOL Anyway, while I love A Fistful of Paintballs, I didn't love the next part.

OMG, I have to wait a long time for Lost Girl & Misfits. Nuts!

True Blood - It better be good because I wasn't liking the 3rd season. Entourage - I want to know what happens and as much as I don't like Vince, I want to see how it ends up for him as well as for everyone. Also, I'm hoping for an Alex O'Loughlin cameo where he's like Scott's client. LOL
The Glades - Yay!

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah there's just something off about it. It makes me sad.

Yes, too long!

I don't dislike Vince but he's kind of a handful isn't he? I definitely want to see where we leave these guys. I'm suspecting it will be somewhere close to where we found them. ;)

[identity profile] x-greyflowers-x.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Just chiming in to say that I adored that line on Parenthood! ♥ Also, yes! Happy Endings was such a pleasant surprise and, yes again, those last two eps had to be from just after the pilot. Glad to see they're getting another season.

This is my amazing personal assistant for TV scheduling. You can set it up to only list the shows you watch, then you can even check them off to keep track of your viewing. Handy dandy indeed. :D
(Futon Critic is another option that lets you add your shows then view 'My Futon' to see which of your shows are on for a respective night. It's not as pretty, though.)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't it so good? A scene like that between a grandfather and his teenage granddaughter. When do we ever get to see stuff like that on TV and in such a moving way?

Yeah they definitely were out of order. I was thinking about it while watching the eps that they reason they might have aired them like that was because they were slightly... separate? IDK they didn't have the feel of group cohesion that I vaguely recall from those first couple eps after the pilot. This is a case where it's probably better that they aired them out of order.

OH my gosh! You're awesome I am SO going to check those out!

[identity profile] far-to-nowhere.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yea Community was just...underwhelming overall and really forgettable. Parks & Rec is totally taking over in that department.

I need to watch The Killing, it seems my f-list is getting into that.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's really disappointing. I have sort of given up on it.

I cannot watch Parks and Rec. I know that people say that it's gotten a lot better since season one. But watching it in season one, it is just not my kind of humor at all. (And I thought it was boring, but people say that's gotten better too.) So unless they change the style of the humor entirely, I am pretty sure I'm not going to like the later seasons either. :(

If you are impatient, I'd say maybe wait until The Killing is over and then mainline it. It's really fascinating, but it's definitely a slow-mover.

[identity profile] far-to-nowhere.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I skipped season one (because someone told me to) and watched from season 2, so I'm not sure if the humor changed from season 1 to 2. But it reminded me of a new The Office, so I enjoyed it alot. And I like the extremes Community can go to but they usually let these extreme stories overwhelm the characters and writing. Parks & Rec is pretty tame but still goes just a little bit further--while keeping characters and arcs in mind. So I'm loving it alot.

Oh I'm the queen of slow shows--I kinda expect it from AMC too so that wouldn't be enough reason for me not to watch :D

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I have heard of a lot of people doing that. But I don't know if I could do that with a show and be really serious about it. I did like the office in the first couple of seasons, but Parks & Rec, when I watched it, went a lot further than the office did with that awkward humor I thought. I remember watching it and just not thinking it was funny (in season one.)

You should definitely watch The Killing then, especially if that's your kind of thing!

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What channel does Happy Endings come on?

Are you enjoying the Killing? I finally got into a groove and rhythm with downloading it. I'm really enjoying it. :-)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy Endings is on ABC.

I am enjoying it! I just need to catch up!

[identity profile] caffeinified.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Community always makes me laugh

And I so agree with you about Parenthood being underrated. I bawled at that season finale. They just have an awesome cast and awesome story lines that aren't too over the top.

Oh I think you'll like Castle! One of my favorite shows that was a little slow to begin with but just gets better and better with each season.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's such a good show. I am honestly as surprised by this fact as I am by the fact that not more people watch or talk about it!

I have been told it's very good. I just gotta make the time.

[identity profile] hepburnesque.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I watched the season finale of Grey's Anatomy last night. I was happy that April got the chief resident position. It seems like she's the only one who's got her shit together.

Zola seems like a sweet baby, but I'm surprised that the social worker gave her to just Meredith when Meredith and Derek applied to adopt her together.

I'm really glad to see Teddy and her husband getting closer.

I think you're right about characters not being fleshed out. Lexie doesn't seem like she gets attention unless she's in a relationship (although I would like to see her with Mark).

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm actually a big fan of April's. I even wrote a short gen (gen! not shippy!) fic for her. Hahaha.

I'm sure Meredith probably told some story about how Derek was in surgery or working or something. But yeah, I'm surprised it happened so fast actually. But I guess they have to set us up for next season with their adoption storyline. She does seem like a sweet baby though.

Yes me too! I was really pulling for him. I would like to see more of their relationship, would have liked to see more of their frienship blossoming into something more, but there are so many characters on this show that it's hard.

I wouldn't mind seeing her back with Mark depending on how they do it. I feel like I wouldn't mind seeing her with anyone as long as they did it right. They sort of just throw her with people. This season alone, she's been with Alex, Mark, and Jackson. That's a lot of relationships to just toss around. Not a lot of development of any of them, in my opinion.

[identity profile] hamarakissa.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree about Grey's. I wanna see more about the characters - more development; but I'm afraid we never will. I was very disappointed in this season finale :\ I'm happy that April is coming back and hopefully we'll get the learn more of who she is. I didn't like April at first, but she's grown on me. :)

TVD - I have to gather all my thoughts on that. I loved the finale - it was amazing. I love Katherine - I hope she's not gone for long and I'm really excited about seeing bad!Stefan. I'd like to see Elena on her own - not being tied to anyone, standing on her own. She's grown A LOT through this season and I'm so glad for that. :) Damon I have mixed feelings for. I love Damon on some levels and I dislike him for others, too. Just as I did Spike :x

I completely love The Killing <3

I'm excited for True Blood this summer. As well as Rizzoli & Isles, plus Lost Girl! :)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-22 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
It was a bit of a lackluster finale wasn't it? I really did grow to love April this season as well.

I feel like Elena will want to find Stefan and bring him back. It won't be until they see each other again, depending how far gone Stefan is what will happen with their relationship. I can see Stefan pulling one of those "it's too dangerous for anyone to be around me" things. Which would probably be true.

I don't think Lost Girl comes back until the fall actually. Bummer!

[identity profile] ozmissage.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, ABC is airing Happy Endings out of order, those two eps should have been 2&3 (although, I get why they held them back, I'm not sure the show would have grabbed me so quickly with those two, they were good, but not as good as what we've been getting). "Dave of the Dead" was shifted around too and I don't get that at all, that ep was my favorite of the bunch so far.

That scene in Parenthood gutted me. Zeke used to rub me the wrong way, but I adored him this year. Who am I kidding, I adore all of them. I'm so glad it was picked up for another year.

Haven! I'm psyched. I just wish we didn't have to wait until July...

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2011-05-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I feel the same about them holding the eps back for good reason. It made sense when I was watching it. It lacked something, maybe the group vibe? Idk.

Right? Gosh this show gets me in unexpected ways. I'm so glad we're having another season. I kind of hope Amber & Drew's father returns. He was great. But also Amber's teacher. (Why am I forgetting everyone's names?) That could be interesting.

Yay, Haven!
