A case of the randoms.

So, I'm browsing netflix today and I'm noticing the recommended titles they have for me are all separated into different and totally made-up genres. These are all based on my viewing history on netflix, I'm assuming, and possibly any ratings I've left there, which I know I did a bit of when I first signed up for the service. Some of these suggestions make total sense to me but a few of them are a little silly. Like, documentaries specifically about underdogs. I don't remember watching a ton of those, although I do watch a lot of documentaries, but okay! Anyway, here's a list of my suggested genres:

Understated Suspenseful TV Shows
Witty Showbiz TV Shows
(They recommended I watch Sports Night. I think that means I have to finally give in.)
Gritty TV Shows Featuring a Strong Female Lead
Visually-striking Psychological Thrillers
Biographical Underdog Documentaries
Mind-Bending Foreign Fantasy
Dark Viral Plague Sci Fi Thrillers
Quirky Independent Buddy Movies
Goofy Fight-the-System Late Night Comedies
Scary Wilderness-survival Action & Adventure

Anyone care to share theirs?

...wow. That's ... weird.

Actually though those genres would be much more helpful for me finding new things to watch than *actual* genres.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
They are far more specific, that's for sure.

[identity profile] shineyma.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Mine are Violent Suspenseful TV Shows, Witty Biographical Dramas, Feel-good Family Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Cerebral Foreign Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Goofy Independent Action & Adventure, Gritty Music & Concert Documentaries, Critically-Acclaimed Dark Comedies, Quirky TV Shows, and like three different categories of family movies. I don't even KNOW where all the family movies come in.

It's actually a little hilarious, yeah?

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Feel-good Family Sci Fi Fantasy! Hah. It's so specific! It just cracks me up!

Do you have any kids that use your netflix? Maybe that's where it comes from?

[identity profile] shineyma.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, right? I love it!

No, I'm the only one that uses my netflix. That's why I'm so confused! As far as I can tell, the only "family" movie I've ever watched was The Labyrinth. I have no idea how one movie spawned like five categories. It's a little weird.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybeee that's like a default setting? Like, "until proven otherwise, netflix assumes everyone loves a wide variety of family films."

Dark viral plague thrillers? sign me up! ;)

I have:
understated independent movies
exciting tv dramas
supernatural horror movies
biographical movies
quirky movies
cerebral suspenseful tv shows
dark courtroom tv shows
classic romantic movies
witty thrillers

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL Yeah I was joking with [livejournal.com profile] kmousie last night that they could really have made that category a little more depressing. Just add a few more adjectives.

Intense Dark Viral Plague Cannabalistic Sci Fi Thrillers in which No One Ever Bathes. Sounds like a very good time indeed. Haha.

Oh Cerebral Suspenseful TV Shows, I like that one!

[identity profile] akzseinga.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
Mind-Bending Foreign Fantasy
That sounds like something I would like. Any titles? :)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-19 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
There isn't much there actually. Here's the list:

Alice, 1988
Santa Sangre, 1989
Ashura, 2005
Green Snake, 1993
Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain, 1983

Heres some of mine:

Cerebral British TV Dramas
Imaginative Animation for ages 11 to 12
Witty Comedies from the 1950s
Gritty Crime TV Shows
Dark Tv Shows
Feel-good Family Features

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Witty Comedies from the 1950s! What is in that category!?! lol

[identity profile] hondagirll.livejournal.com 2012-02-20 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I had one a few months back that was Romantic Period Drama Horror Thrillers based on my love of Romance, Period Drama and Horror movies (have I mentioned my Netfllix account is split between 6 people? Because it is)

Although I'm intrigued by Goofy Fight-the-System Late Night Comedies

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Romantic Period Drama Horror Thriller.... the only thing I could think of that might fit that is Sleepy Hollow and that werewolf one with Benicio Del Toro and Emily Blunt. Though I'm sure there's more! Very curious mesh of genres!

Let me go look up those for you! (If it's still there!)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Goofy Fight-the-System Late Night Comedies:
Revenge of the Nerds, '84
Stir Crazy, '80
The Hollywood Knights, '80
Totally Baked: Unrated, '07
H.O.T.S., '79

I have no idea where these came from. I don't remember watching anything like these films, lol. I thought maybe my high rating for Empire Records or something may have gotten this recced to me. Possibly! But I don't know.

My brother and I have an ongoing thing where we text each other the really out-there categories.

Right now, mine are pretty boring because I've been watching a lot of tv shows, but the best are: Exciting War Sci-Fi and Fantasy (which is all 1950s Flash Gordon and "Hercules and the Amazon Women" lol), Deep Sea TV Shows For Ages 5 To 7 (when I have not watched a single thing in either of these categories), and Imaginative Space-Travel TV Shows (which includes Star Trek and Star Trek the Animated Series).

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hahah aw, cute!

Exciting War Sci Fi AND Fantasy! Wow. That's one helluva category, lol.

But the Deep Sea TV shows for ages 5-7 one is probably the most intriguing. WHAT? Haha.

Teehee! Tonight I got "Classic Action & Adventure based on classic literature"! I love the redundancy.
