Seven Questions

Swiped from [livejournal.com profile] ozmissage:
Comment to this post letting me know you want to participate, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random.

Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

1. What draws you to OT3s? I've noticed you seem to gravitate toward them and you always create the most interesting ones.
Okay, for as much as I like to deny my Supernatural roots, the first OT3 I can even remember reading was Sam/Dean/Jo. It wasn't really a pairing (threesome) I was super into, but that's the first I can really remember, so I guess it deserves a little mention here. Especially because it consists of two of my biggest fic kinks: incest and mmf threesomes. Claire/Jack/Sawyer came next, which was pretty much forged by my own sheer will. And if you've never heard this story, the sad truth is that this ship was literally born out of a joke during the 3rd season of Lost when I was just very unhappy with the show so I amused myself in episode discussions with others by making up completely non-existent shippy sub-text between characters. One such night "Jawyercita" was born and I kind of couldn't let go of the idea and it became a thing. This is notable because it was the first threesome that I really latched onto. (And held onto with all my might for as long as humanly possible.)

I think what draws me to this type of pairing is all the different ways three people can connect. You've got the relationship that all three of them share, ABC, but you've also got three other, completely separate (and yet intertwined) relationships. A to B, B to C, and A to C. And for some reason that random math equation is totally and utterly fascinating to me. The details of it, the taboo, the idea that no matter how hard they try to fit themselves together as one, they're still fractured in the most basic of ways -- one character catching another's eye when the other one isn't looking and they have this completely separate, private moment that's just for the two of them even if, at the end of the day, they are a triad.

2. You storm the TVD writers' room and take all of their keyboards away. It's your show now, what direction do you take it in?
First, I'd petition to move it to 9PM and it'd get racier and grittier, if I could manage it. You don't really want to know who I'd kill, though I'm sure you could guess, but let's just say that I'd be trimming some fat in terms of excess characters. I feel like, just because I'm me, I would initially take this show to a very dark place. There will be blood, and male facial hair. (Ugh, why is everyone, bar Alaric and Klaus, always so clean shaven? It's disconcerting!) There would also need to be more Katherine, and I'd work toward introducing Tatia as a character.

There would also be some legitimate fall-out for Damon and not this boo-hoo-I'm-in-the-doghouse-for-one-whole-episode crap that he's been getting for seasons. I just want to see him on a path of redemption that doesn't include him being at the right place at the right time just to swoop in and be magically forgiven. That is basically how his so-called redemption arc has gone until now. It's very shady-politician-esque where they distract you with this other thing so you forget that you're mad about all this other stuff, etc. Under my rule, that would no longer be allowed. He needs some other motivation in his life other than wanting Elena. I'd try to give that to his character.

I want some serious not-pretend, not-free-will-less betrayal to go down. Like, two people that we the audience loves fighting on two different sides and each having their own, very good reasons for that. I'd even like to see other characters choosing sides, having the whole group split up as a result. It would be epic and terrible and not everybody would make it out alive. And then perhaps in the end they could reunite to fight a common enemy or something -- but you just know that nothing will ever be the same again.

Basically I want all characters to interact. I think they've done a pretty crappy job of that, especially this season. You constantly see the same people interacting and it just doesn't work. There are so many characters on this show. Let's mix it up a bit shall we?

In terms of ship directions? Tyler/Jeremy would totally be a thing. I don't even care how, but it's going to happen if I'm running the show. I also want Elena to be alone and fierce all on her own for a while. Without anybody drooling and slobbering all over her every spare moment. We don't even want to know who I'd hook up, because I'm a crazy multi-shipper and it'd be like one big incestuous pool of bed-mates if I had my way, so I'd probably have to tame that, but I would try to make people hooking up not such a huge deal. Nix all the high school stuff and just be like "we're grown ups, we can handle this."

3. If you could do just one thing in your life over again, what would it be and what would you do differently?
I'd probably just focus on my education earlier and more aggressively.

4. Who would win in a broody vampire smackdown: Stefan or Angel?
Well I don't know... Angel has more combat training but Stefan can seriously brood with the best of them. Also, his vampire skills seem a little bit stronger than Angel's in a general sense. I think in the end it would have to be a draw though. They'd both walk away from the fight exhausted, perplexed, and guilt-ridden.

5. Talk to me about your vidding process because you're awesome at it and the whole thing seems like magic to me. I don't understand how my television works either.
Look, I don't know what to say. It is actually magic...

This is actually kind of an embarrassing fact, but I have no really vidding method. I know a lot of vidders do, you can tell just by reading their vid-notes. And I kind of get the impression that I'm missing something elemental in my vidding because of it. It seems that every single one of my vids comes together in a different and unique way. I have no real rituals unless you count opening up a vidding program a ritual, and that's kind of a necessary evil. (If I could figure out how to vid with just my brain, I'd totally be there.) I did talk a lot about vidding in this interview at [livejournal.com profile] vid_commentary and you can read that if you are interested in specific things. But basically? My vid process is just chaos mixed with inspiration mixed with a collection of knowledge/lessons learned over the past 7 years.

6. If you could make one book required reading for humanity at large, what book would you choose and why?
On any other day, I probably would say The Lorax because it's my favorite Seuss book and one with a great message. (And this has nothing to do with Zac Efron, lol.) But at the same time it feels like humanity at large needs kind of a broader message than "save the trees" doesn't it? Something about love and tolerance and something that warns about abuse of power and tells us about how life is really just absurd and how we shouldn't take things too seriously or feel too guilty about stuff we do or judge each other, etc. Whatever book is about all that, put it on the list!

7. What is your go-to comfort food?
Lots of things! Mashed potatoes, sushi, grilled cheese, ramen, hot crusty bread with butter, etc.

Hit me (baby one more time).

I'll try not to make all of these questions about fic. NO PROMISES.

1. What is your biggest fandom regret?

2. What pairings have you never really written, that you wish you had and by-gosh-you-will-someday?

3. If you could re-do any of your favorite shows from any point in their canon story, what shows would you pick, and at what point would you begin to deviate from the canon?

4. What's your favorite, quickest, delicious-est recipe recommendation? (Something you could just rattle off at the drop of a hat.)

5. You have a history of going for the non-traditional and non-canon pairings. I over-identify with this. Talk a little bit about that. Why? When? How? Do you have any rules? Etc.

6. Is it?

7. What are your favorite songs to listen to when writing fic? Or does it vary by fandom/pairing?

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 08:44 am (UTC)(link)

YESSS! This was what I loved about season 1--understanding why Elena asked Damon to make Jer forget, and understanding why Jer was PISSED OFF OMFG NOT FORGIVING YOU LIKE EVER (well, most of the rest of the season) about it; Bonnie not unspelling the anti-vampire weapon; John and his totally bizarre vampire-hating+colluding-with-Katherine-and-Isobel, etc etc. And then early in season 2 this stuff all just...stopped. There was Katherine, then there was Elijah, then there was Klaus, Klaus, more Klaus, and ghosts. Also filicidal Original parents, but I guess there's a bit more in-group conflict there.

(Though I'll say Elena getting Jer compelled *again* was a pretty legit betrayal, one I hope (vainly?) she's going to have to pay for...)

4. Who would win in a broody vampire smackdown: Stefan or Angel?
Well I don't know... Angel has more combat training but Stefan can seriously brood with the best of them. Also, his vampire skills seem a little bit stronger than Angel's in a general sense. ROFL

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but It's not a "real" betrayal because Elena allowed herself to be deluded enough into thinking that she was actually "helping" Jeremy.

I feel like this show could go so much deeper. There's that one scene in Buffy, I mean, there are hundreds probably, but there's one with Giles and Ben in the season 5 finale, after Buffy has weakened Glory so much that Ben finally re-emerges, beaten and unable to stand. And in that moment Giles is left alone with him and tells Ben that Buffy could never take a human life, even if she knows she'll pay for her mercy in the end, she can't do it because she's a hero. And he says "She's a hero, you see. She's not like us." And then he proceeds to smother Ben to death. And just. MY HEART. It's so morally gray and yet PERFECT and for me that's what this show is missing. I mean, that's at least ONE of the things that this show is missing.

[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
I probably shouldn't ask for questions, because I feel like we don't know each other well enough, but then, maybe that's a good reason to ask for them! Also, I really shouldn't take on another meme, but I guess I'm in the mood. So, if you have some questions for me, I'll totally answer them. ;-)

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
It hadn't been my intent to ask for questions, but now that you mention it, yes, please. :)

I mean, Elena's season 1 betrayal of Jeremy was *the* moment I latched on to this show--or, rather, when Jeremy finds out and is furious, because they'd managed to play it, at first, in this way that made it like a good thing, and then he called her on how not cool it was; because I could see exactly why Elena did it and why it made sense in the moment, but also saw (and agreed with) Jeremy's UMM NO as soon as it was said. It counted as a betrayal enough for him to date someone who kidnapped her... IDK, I think it was a pretty real betrayal both times, but the second time even worse. I do kinda wish Bonnie and Caroline had done something more than give Elena the side-eye--like, in your scenario, if Bonnie had decided to un-compel him, or to cut Elena off after that--but I have hope for it being treated as a real betrayal.

But then, who knows, maybe I'm projecting my memories of Code Geass onto it a bit. Compulsion is a Big Deal there...

Do you watch Doctor Who? The BTVS moment you mentioned reminds me of "The Girl Who Waited." (Though they completely dropped the ball in follow-up episodes, the analogous moment was pretty gut-wrenching). The other thing it reminds me of is the "bad" ending of Persona 3, which, I know I rant about P3 a lot but OMG IT'S SO GOOD, and the bad end is exemplary of why it's good. (the link is an essay about it, not a YT video, the important part it doesn't explain is that, in the logic you're given, the choice that leads you to the bad end won't actually save the world but will delay its (supposedly) inevitable destruction.*) OTOH, I wasn't especially moved by that moment in Buffy (perhaps because I'd been screaming at her to kill Dawn for 20 episodes at that point...), so maybe I've got it wrong.

*I'd link to a YT video, but if you haven't played the game the bad end would mean nothing to you (which is part of the point, it's all dramatic irony since (thanks to you!) the characters have lost both their memories and their personal growth and so it's all very subtle)

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt Bonnie could "un-compel" him, but it'd've been exciting to watch them come up with a way to save Jeremy from her. (Give Damon the side-eye-of-aneurysm until he agreed to undo it? Get Klaus to do it? Just tell him and see what happens (presumably it'd be futile, he'd been compelled not just to forget but also to go to Denver, which, come to think of it, that'd be *really* interesting as a metaphor for conditioning)?)

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
"thanks to you[-the main character]," not you-you.

[identity profile] ellensmithee.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
In my head canon, Tyler ran into Jeremy while both were out of town and they'll be returning together. Also, they totally have a thing now.

[identity profile] shineyma.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
They'd both walk away from the fight exhausted, perplexed, and guilt-ridden.

I am dying of laughter. DYING.

I promise that's not the only thing I took from your questions, it's just what stuck the most. :)

We don't know each other well, but as one of the above commenters said, that's actually a great reason to ask for questions! So, hit me, please! (but gently)

[identity profile] gottalovev.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
lol! I love your answer for Angel vs Stefan! and the rest, too. it's true that a ménage à trois has a lot of tension possibility and I had no idea that your first one was Dean/Sam/Jo

I'd put you in charge of the TVD storylines in an instant =D

(I don't have time for questions of my own, though, just wanted to read your answers!)

[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There would also be some legitimate fall-out for Damon and not this boo-hoo-I'm-in-the-doghouse-for-one-whole-episode crap that he's been getting for seasons

I would LOVE realistic consequences for just about everyone on that show. It would make the whole thing SO much better.

hot crusty bread with butter

So beyond delicious, am I right? I was super disappointed when I went to an italian place last night and their bread was lame.

What seven things do you want to hear me talk about?

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
1. What was your first fandom?

2. Have you ever given up on a show/fandom? For what reasons?

3. What are your biggest fandom pet peeves?

4. If you could teleport once and only once (return trip included), where would you go, and what would you do when you got there?

5. Gimme a quote, any quote.

6. What's the best book you've read lately?

7. Are you more drawn to characters who are very much like you? Or to characters who are different from you?

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
1. What was your first slash ship?

2. I'm going to use your banner for this one. Fuck, Marry, Kill: Sawyer, Jack, & Sayid. (With reasons!)

3. Is there any show that you have always wanted to watch that you've never gotten around to watching?

4. Talk to me a little bit about OTPs. Is that something you subscribe to or are you a multishipper? What are your OTPs if you have any?

5. Do you have a favorite picture/s of Alex O'Loughlin? If so, please post it/them.

6. Even though we may not have known each other for very long, I have known your username for quite some time. How long have you been in fandom? What makes you stick around? Have you ever left/thought of leaving? Why did/didn't you?

7. Carrots? Or Carrot Cake?

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, yes.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Recommend a book to me. I want you to really sell it.

2. When did you first start writing fic? What was your first fandom and what made you start writing?

3. Have you ever made any other types of fanworks other than fanfic?

4. Can you cook? What's your best dish?

7. Give me your top 5 favorite songs of the moment.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I was into Supernatural during the first two seasons. I read a fair amount of Dean/Sam, Dean/Jo, and at least a handful of Dean/Jo/Sam threesome fic (not triangle fic). [livejournal.com profile] elohvee wrote at least one if I am remembering right, but I do know she wrote some Dean/Jess/Sam as well.

Me in charge? I wish! Haha.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh that would be the most disappointing thing ever. Hot rolls with olive oil and herbs? The best! I'm sorry it was no good!

1. I feel like you ship a lot of canon pairings: do you find that to be true? Are there any non-canon pairings that you love or do you have any trends/rules about pairings you follow? Have you ever broken them?

2. Talk to me a little bit about fandom and privacy. Are you fandom interactions something your family/friends know about or is it something that you keep mostly secret? (For instance, they may know generalities, but not specifics.)

3. If you could re-write any storyline on Lost, which would it be and how would it end?

4. If you could go back and re-live any time/day/moment in your life. What would it be? (Would you change anything, or just leave things as they happened?)

5. If you could be best friends with any fictional character, who would you pick?

6. What is your greatest fandom weakness? (What can't you resist?)

7. Do you have any guilty pleasure tv shows? What are they?

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, my response is probably way too long, but it's up, and it doesn't seem to be complaining about my HTML anymore.

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Also apparently part of the epilogue to Persona 3 is a more exact fit with the kind of disintegration you're talking about in the main post. (As much as I rave about P3, I've mostly only played the main game, because, well...sequels... Though reading this post might change my mind; up to this point I've only heard bad things about it.)

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-02-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
by "this post" I mean the one I linked to.

[identity profile] ozmissage.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
You know you're the reason I'm obsessed with OT3s now, right? You and your awesome Claire/Sawyer/Jack fics. Now I OT3 all over the place.

Awesome explanation is awesome. I've always liked how easily "us against the world" can turn into jealousy when you're dealing with threesomes. Like you said, the dynamic really brings out all the ways they're fractured, but the fact that they ultimately stick together always feels so hopeful to me. I'm less inclined to break-up an OT3 permanently than I am to break-up a couple for some reason.

Even if you would totally kill off my favorite character, I'd love your TVD. I'm on the outs with the show right now. I need to catch up, but I'm lacking the motivation.

I think in the end it would have to be a draw though. They'd both walk away from the fight exhausted, perplexed, and guilt-ridden.

Heh. Yes, yes they would.

I'm going to go read your vidder interview now. :D

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh very interesting and totally what I mean too.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hee!

I will gladly take credit for the OT3 thing, hehe. (Gosh I miss them, I want to write them like right now.)

I am pretty sure I've broken up threesomes before, but usually it's with something benign like DEATH. Hahaha. Man, I am so morbid sometimes, haha. Thank you for putting up with me.

I think the best (most useful) answer at that interview is my answer for any advice I would have for people starting out in vidding. I am kind of embarrassed to go back and read that thing, actually, but I remember that one specifically.

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
^-^

I wish it was Persona 3 they were making into an anime instead of P4. (Though I have enough complaints about the adaptation of P4 (too faithful to the source material, adapting the game instead of the story) that I'm kind of ok with it) 1, I like the overall plot of P3 better, and 2, the transphobic part of it is 5-30 seconds long and something that could easily be cut in a TV adaptation, not a central plot character, as in P4 (though the P4 transphobia isn't as bad on a per-minute basis, nor as bad in Japanese as it is in English, I could never have finished it if it was).

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ack! I forgot to say *why* as I got caught up in the why not. oh what was the third one? oops.

Basically, the story of P3 is awesome, and the Persona games are the only games I've ever played that could compete with a good TV show in terms of plot and characterization. (plenty that could stand next to *mediocre* TV shows, but...) Like, even if you just took the central plot and characters, without any of the gameplay or social links or side stories, you'd still have to cut if you wanted to get it done in a 26 episode (13 hr) anime season, and even a 22 episode (22 hr) live action season would have to cut stuff, though maybe not main story.

*needs Yukari icon*

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I have very poor attention problems that make it pretty much impossible for me to play any video games that are that complicated and especially if they're POV games or similar. (I don't even know if I'm calling them the right thing.) I mean, I have a Wii but I use it mostly for Wii sports and the dancing Michael Jackson game, haha. My parents do other games with it, but not me. And I probably wouldn't even do the Wii sports thing without family/friends who come over and play, haha.

A friend of mine, Warren, gives me crap about this weird facet of my personality all the time, ahah. He's a video game lover and probably would know exactly what you're talking about and think I was a crazy person.

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha!

Well, hence the wanting a TV show, I feel like it would be easier to recommend to people? A video game that clocks in at well over 100 hours is a much larger commitment than a TV show, and isn't free unless you pirate it (and pirating television doesn't feel like stealing in a way that pirating software kinda does...even though the best version of P3, IMO, is pirate-only). Also that it'd be ongoing and easier to have a fandom of because of the wait between episodes. Not that I didn't return to LJ 90% because none of my IRL fans watch TVD and I had gotten kind of obsessed with it, so I guess there's that too.

I mean, I *like* video games, but I'm kinda dissing them at the same time by saying only Persona really compares to television, right? It is true that I haven't played any Bioware games though, I hear they're pretty good and they had a great smackdown response to homophobic male gamers complaining about a scene in Dragon Age II.

By POV games do you mean first person shooters? Or RPGs? I h8 FPS games, personally, but yeah games can require a large degree/amount of attention over a long period of time. (Though, ironically, obsessive gaming is considered a possible symptom/warning sign of ADHD, in that hyperfocus (associated with gaming) is associated with lack of focus control...

[identity profile] hysteria-3ced.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, please. I want you to kick the TVD writers out and write your version out. I'd watch that with no hesitation.

[identity profile] mollivanders.livejournal.com 2012-02-27 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I like your ideas for TVD! The show really does seem like its floundering and what you suggested sounds like a breath of fresh air.

What, Jawyercita isn't a thing? I think you made that a real thing, hon. Totally.

[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com 2012-02-28 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay... I'm posting the answers in my LJ - if it ever stops being slow! - in just a few minutes! ;-)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well thank you! Haha. I have a feeling I'd be happy with just about any changes in direction currently.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-03-01 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I need to send them my resume, hah.

Oh oh, no! I meant... Jawyercita started a joke, and then turned into a thing. Haha.
