Livejournal, BE MORE AWESOME

Geez, you guys. Why is this place so slow this week? I mean, it's been slow for a while but this is even worse. I know I'm not being helpful by driving everyone away with my constant fangirling over The Killing, but c'mon. Don't fail me now.

Here are a few things happening in my brain right now:

→ Vids. Vids. Vids. I told [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonster that I've got The Vids: Meaning, I have all the vid bunnies, but no actual vidding is ever accomplished. If someone walks past me whistling a tune, I am like "Oh! That would make a great vid for x, y or z fandom! *dreamy sigh*" I vid in my head and it is amazing, people. (All that being said, I have a The Killing, Generation Kill, and possibly a Shameless vid in the works.)

rudy

GENERATION KILL: Why had I not watched this before now? It was glorious and I love everyone. (Well, not everyone, Trombley.) I fully give [livejournal.com profile] slybrunette responsibility for this. And also, as I said on Tumblr (or somewhere) I think my ship goggles are broken. (Kaput!) Because of course I am going to totally latch onto Brad/Walt like some kind of weirdo who digs "mothering/care-taking" ships. (Who? ME? Holder/Linden, Stefan/Caroline, and speaking of shipping the wrong thing in war fandoms, Chuckler/Leckie, etc.) It's just not right. (Or fair.) Especially in a fandom that has a shit-ton of fic. It's like they're purposefully taunting me. At least [livejournal.com profile] slybrunette has said she'll try to write them for me. I might die of happiness. (Also, the fact that I am capable of finding Askars attractive is a complete shock to me. Just FYI. That is not a thing I was remotely interested in at all before now. No matter how many times True Blood showed us his ass.)

fionarun

SHAMELESS: I'm catching up and I'm so glad. I missed the Gallaghers. (Except for Frank, of course.) And the Jacksons and the Fisher-Balls. Etc. I love this family so much that I will essentially take them any way that I can get them. Despite the gross Frank-drama in the first few episodes, and the fact that getting episodes is a pain in the ass sometimes, I pretty much love this show as if it were my own child. True story.

→ I think I promised to write some reactions to the deluge of season finales that happened. I... kind of never did that. I really should, but the further away from them I get the more detached I feel. I am sure there are one or two shows I haven't finished yet, so I'll come back to talk about those whenever I am done. But for now I think I'll just say that most of the finales this year (for me) were underwhelming. Finales usually fall into one of two categories. You've got "Really? That's it?" And then there's "Oh my god! Why isn't next season here right now!?!" There's no middle ground.

→ Right now I am mostly just looking forward to summer shows like Haven and the good parts of So You Think You Can Dance. (Auditions this year have been kinda meh - always my least favorite part of the show and they feel like they're taking forever this year.) And I really want to watch that Daniel Gillies pilot, even if it is potentially bad, just because Daniel Gillies could pretty much get me to do anything.

→ Speaking of things I'm going to be (potentially) watching later, I recently got access to HBOgo and I am like a kid in candy store. Seriously? BEST. After Generation Kill, I think I'll end up watching Game of Thrones, despite my better judgement. In fact, I may have already started on that front. Basically so far the only people who are not total creeps are the Starks. (I am not sure that is the reaction the producers intended.) And I also want to finally watch Six Feet Under, which I've always wanted to do. I was given season 1 on DVD and I have been avoiding watching it because I'm secretly afraid that I will love it so much and then I won't have any of the other seasons available. Problem solved!

→ I saw Snow White and the Huntsman and it was pretty much the best. I have been jonesing to see it ever since the trailers because that bit with the huntsman from the original Disney animation was, for me, literally the most interesting part of that movie. (Seriously? That thing is a snooze-fest. I always had a mini-panic attack any time one of the kids wanted to watch it. Please God, anything else!) I mean, he stalks her through the woods, raises the knife above her head, and then he just can't do it. And Neil reminded me this week about the deer heart that he brought to the queen instead. I was really interested to see that little side-plot explored in film. Plus, it just looked awesome? And it was. I mean, I'm sure there was room for improvement but I loved it a lot and generally that's my criteria for What Makes Something Good. My favorite thing about it was definitely the ambiguous love story. And the major, major OT3 vibes I got. (But I'm a weirdo, what do I know?)

→ Speaking of, why isn't Savages in my eyeballs right now? Same for Lola Versus. Dear Universe: GIVE IT ME.

→ I'm feeling really unproductive in the world of fic right now. Meaning there is so much fic that I want to write but I haven't had a chance to. I considered doing a fic meme but then there's always the guilt associated with the fact that I only end up writing a couple of the prompts that people took the time to leave. It's not fair to you guys. I have a lot of plans, always, but we'll see how that pans out. I definitely want this summer to be majorly productive. This is, by no means, a call for prompts, but if anyone wants to let me know what kind of pairings/fandoms they want to see me writing over the summer, I'll see what I can do!

→ In conclusion: Joel Kinnaman

[identity profile] quiet-rebel.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto on the LJ! Where are all my fangirls at?!

Excited about Savages--because it's Oliver Stone and an actual OT3! Although I'm interested in seeing if they're going to keep the book's ending, which honestly, ticked me off!

AH! You still haven't seen Lola Versus? Because you know, Joel Kinnaman! And he's dating Olivia Munn? Ugh.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? It's like a void. *echo*echo*echo*

I have a strong feeling the ending will be the same. While it made me sad, I kind of thought it was beautiful the way it ended. So I'll be happy either way.

Nope. It was released this weekend but it appears to be a limited release. I am pretty much dying to see it. D-Y-I-N-G.

ETA: Why are we "ugh"ing Olivia Munn. (I know next to nothing about her.) Or are we simply "ugh"ing the fact that he's currently spoken-for?

Basically so far the only people who are not total creeps are the Starks. (I am not sure that is the reaction the producers intended.)

No, no that's pretty much the intention. Well, not "creepy", maybe, but Morally Ambiguous Assholes: The Show? Yes.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I haven't gotten so far into it but "ambigous" would not be the word I would choose. Bankrupt, seems slightly more accurate to me.

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like the characters are, on the whole, a lot more sympathetic in season 2. I'm actually not a big fan of Robb Stark, but in addition to the remainder of the Starks, I think Tyrion and Daenerys have their hearts pretty consistently in the right place. (Tyrion definitely a creeper, tho, can't contest that)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I am sure that's all true. But I'm only 2 episodes in, so give me time. Daenerys so far has pretty much been a victim of said creepery. And hey, I didn't even know that was her name because they were calling her something else. That's how far into the series I am. Once I learn people's names, I'll get back to you. Haha.

[identity profile] rabiya-al-basri.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhhhhhhhh

FWIW, I watched the first episode and gave up because it was all ~~eroticized rape scenes~~ and ~~racist BS~~, then after being told it was really really good and worth it, I went back to it and was very glad I did.

It does suffer from *way too many characters, far too many of whom are awful people* in a big way all the way through, but never so bad as in the first episode or two. Given the source material, kind of inevitable, but... there's just not enough screen time to connect with anyone at first. Which is annoying.

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I wanted to see Snow White and the Huntsman too, but now I'm maybe going to see Brave in two weeks instead. Maybe I'll do a double feature! I haven't done that since I was a kid!

LJ was super-slow and I wanted to say the same thing! But then I thought maybe people were Twittering or Tumblring or something?

Bambi is such a snoozefest, oh my gods. I mean, yes, we know what's coming and it's sad but I think you can only be about 24 months old before you get too bored to watch it. But maybe that's just me.

(spoilers for Bambi) And I'm still a bit pissed that the dad came out of nowhere at the end. Seriously, where was he before?
Edited 2012-06-09 16:45 (UTC)

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I wanted to take my little girl Lizzie to see Brave but she's not allowed to see anything above G unless it's been properly screened first. This was not always the case but as she's gotten a little older and understands more of what she sees, she's the kind of kid who gets really emotionally attached to characters and ends up asking (and then obsessing over) philosophical questions that are addressed in anything she watches, Long story short (too late!) I won't be able to take her unless her parents have seen it first. Boo.

Yeah it's definitely been slow over the last week at least. Even more-so than usual. (For me anyway.)

Bambi is pretty slow as well but I think Snow White and Sleepy Beauty are right on par with it. It's like a trifecta of boring.

ETA: YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY SEE SWATH,

YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY SEE SWATH
:-) I definitely shall, then. Kristen Stewart was giving me pause. I've never seen her in anything but I haven't heard she was a brilliant actress, either.

I'll maybe do a double feature. I can't wait for Brave! *bounces*

[identity profile] kmousie.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Six Feet Under is incredible, and you will love it!

[identity profile] kmousie.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Right back atcha, darlin'. ♥

[identity profile] hepburnesque.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the entire series of Six Feet Under if you want to borrow it. :D

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? How did I not know this until now. I'll let you know if I need it when the time comes!

[identity profile] twilightthief.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Im still around.

Yesterday was my bday but yeah Im here.

I def reccomend Game of Thrones. Its great!

My summer show(s) are Falling Skies, Merlin and possibly Teen Wolf.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Happy belated birthday! ♥!

People have been trying to get me to watch GoT since forever. I guess it was only a mtter of time.

I like how you say possibly Teen Wolf. How possibly?

[identity profile] twilightthief.livejournal.com 2012-06-11 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Im getting a lot of mixed reactions/reviews from people about Teen Wolf is all.

Since Im jobless ATM I guess I could give it a shot though *shrugs*

[identity profile] gigglemonster.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so excited you're watching GoT. I hope you keep up and enjoy it more!
You're definitely right that everyone (save for the Starks, like you said) exists in a very very morally grey area on the show. But idk, once you get further into it and get to know the characters and their motivations more, you forgive a lot more of their wrongdoings. Or at least I did lol. With the exception of Joffrey LOL that little shit. And idk that's kind of what I love about it? In a weird way? Maybe I'm too lenient with characters and should be angrier at the things they do, but I always seem to make excuses for them.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's a thing that is apparently happening. Slowly. I still need to finish new girl and the montmaray journals etc. But you know. Baby steps.

[identity profile] askmehow.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Re: Snow White, Huntsman/SnowWhite/William forever!!! Did you notice that any time she was in danger, literally the first thing the Huntsman would do is yell for William, and then they would go and try to help her? So, so OT3.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
Right? Oh my god! Those are the moments where I was just inwardly squeeing with OT3 fangirl glee.

[identity profile] ozmissage.livejournal.com 2012-06-09 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, I am reading The Savages right now and I love it. Winslow's style is so much fun. It reminds me of fic, and I mean that in the best way possible--it's so experimental and unique, and that's more in line with what i'm used to finding in well written fics than actual published books. Apparently, I'm very impressionable lately because I also picked up a cheap copy of the first book in The Monterey Diaries series off of Ebay after I watched [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonster's gorgeous vid, so I'll be reading that next. Anyway, I had a point when I started this paragraph, but I no longer remember what it was, so I'll go with: I'm reading stuff you recced! ;)

Yay, You're watching Game of Thrones! I'm curious to see which characters you gravitate toward the most. If you enjoy the show, do you think you'll give the books a shot?

If you make a vid for The Killing I will totally spaz out. *is excited*

Joel Kinnaman.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't it amazing? It really is the best and totally reminded me of fic too in that experimental way. I love the OT3 and I love the style (it's third person present tense. SOLD.) It is easily one of my favorite books I've read so far this year. Possibly THE favorite? [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonster's vids are pretty convincing though. Who could blame you?

Right now I think I am liking Arya and Ed (Ned?) the best. And maybe less evil Lannister. He interests me at this point. His interactions with Joffrey make me want to know more about him and his motivations.

I am making a vid for the killing but I'm waiting until after the finale. Which I don't know if it's a smart move or not. **shrug** we'll see.

JOEL MOTHERFRAKKING KINNAMAN.

[identity profile] far-to-nowhere.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
WOOOOT, Generation Kill. I've re-watched that show sooo many times. So good. I like it better than the Hanks war series. This one just has such great dialogue all the way through + awesome characters.

The Game of Thrones producers had to be way aware that the Starks are the only easily likable characters in that entire universe. Everyone else is pretty F'ed up. And if you've only watched a few episodes--trust me, there are some other really really creepy weird families you haven't met yet. But I love me some of those messed up characters. And many turn out to have more dimensions to them.

Watch Six Feet Under.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
I started to re-watch it immediately after watching it the first time! SO GOOD. And I definitely enjoyed it more than The Pacific for some reason. I just chalked it up to the modern-day setting. But maybe it's more than that.

Hahaha okay well I guess I meant. I assume they wanted me to take something ELSE away from it other than that. Haha.

Dimensions are okay. I can dig them. It just depends!

Aye, aye, captain!

[identity profile] fosfomifira.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
It has been a very slow week on lj and I wonder why. I know I wasn't at my best and didn't even feel like moping online. Maybe I wasn't the only one.

Generation Kill is fantastic, hands down. Excellent show and great, great fic. I do have a weakness for Brad/Walt - I wrote a tiny piece that I should repost to my lj some day, but I've saved a few links if you're interested.

I first saw Askars on GK and I've been unable to find him unatractive ever since. GK has superpowers, I think that much is obvious.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
I am not sure why. I definitely noticed it though.

RIght? I honestly cannot believe how much fic there is for this fandom. It's insane. And yes, I DO WANT LINKS. I am interested! PLEASE PLEASE?

I think I've been bitten by whatever magic GK holds. It's happened. Finally.

[identity profile] fosfomifira.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
All things considered, I think it's pleasantly surprising how much fic you can find in the GK fandom. I mean, the miniseries is great, but it's not exactly easy to watch at times. Then again, it's not supposed to. I only wish I was a better, more prolific writer.

Snippet nº1, from one of my favourite authors.

A pretty hot, neat AU

A Let's dirty us up some Walt fest, sort of.

A series at ao3.

A really fun, hot piece.

And a personal favourite.

I think you can find a few more stories via the Colbert/HAsser tag at the GK comm.

[identity profile] tellshannon815.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the Daniel Gillies pilot about?

I've been meaning to watch Game of Thrones for a while but must get round to it.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-10 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a medical drama. I still haven't watched it. It's called Saving Hope? Saving Grace? Let me go find a trailer haha.

Saving Hope! And... so okay it's slightly more than a medical drama because it's got this sort of supernatural element maybe? I don't know what to call it.

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-11 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
FYI I watched it. It was REALLY REALLY BORING. But Daniel was REALLY REALLY hot. So.. it kind of balanced out? (No. Not it didn't. At all.)

[identity profile] gottalovev.livejournal.com 2012-06-11 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Generation Kill, but only could watch it once because it hit way too close to home. gah. it was the first time I saw Askars and fell immediately. but thinking of, I never saw him in anything else, since, so who knows.

GoT is pretty hit or miss with people. I have loved the books for over 12 years and I really enjoy the adaptation, but I know some people hate it with a passion (and that's fine! I can get it! lol!). My love for complex character had me finding most of the Starks totally boring (especially Ned and Jon Snow, though I love the girls) and mostly loving on the Lannisters (even if some are an acquired taste ;) )

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-11 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Consider yourself lucky that you haven't watched True Blood. Truly. It's just sad how bad that show has gotten. Crazypants. I tell ya.

Jon Snow is kind of a snooze-fest, I think. The bastard son jokes are just out of control. But there's something I just instantly liked about Ned (Ted, Ed?) for some reason.

[identity profile] gottalovev.livejournal.com 2012-06-11 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I heard that about True Blood. though I admit being curious. since I never can find time to watch shows, I think I might never see it.

I know, I know, I never could find Jon interesting in the books either. Apart from his wolf, Ghost, so I could tolerate his storyline. In the show it's with 80% less Ghost, though, which sucks for me.

It's Ned, yes, short for Eddard. The father, played by Sean Bean. He's probably one of the only real good person on the show, but he just gets on my last nerve with being so slow and naive in a world of traitors. I keep wanting to shake him. My further problem with series!Ned is that as much as I love Sean Bean, he's so not the Ned I had in my head it's too distracting for me. The rest of the casting is flawless, except for him and it drives me nuts!

[identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com 2012-06-11 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
He has a wolf? (This is how clueless I am.)

I am curious as to how you pictured Ned if Sean is so off for the part. Haha.

[identity profile] gottalovev.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
lol! yes! they find the direwolves pups in the first episode... Jon gets the white one *points to icon*

a Stark of Winterfell is supposed to be raven hair and grey eyes... in fact, the uncle Benjen, Ned's brother who is in the Night Watch that you saw is pretty much it. This illustration has been around for a while and they did the scene in the series just like it, very well done, but that guy? that guy is Ned Stark while Sean wasn't

http://drkronner.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/ned-stark.jpg

(says the girl who never could warm up to Legolas in LOTR because he's supposed to be with dark hair, dammit)
