doctor... who now?
001. Last week I finished season 1 of the new Dr. Who, in my fun challenge with
mistojen.
There are some super cute moments overall. I like Rose a lot, she's sweet and very emotional! I have to say though, what I was calling bedazzled trashcans,
ageless_aislynn properly informed me were in fact "salt-and-pepper shaker" looking things. So true! I just can't take the Daleks and about 85 percent of the baddies in this show. And I've watched about 5 eps (maybe?) of season 4 so I can safely say things don't change much in that regard.
My suspension of disbelief and tolerance for cheesy sci fi and bad effects has to be at all time high when watching this show. I mean, even watching Stargate Atlantis is a stretch for me, because honestly I've never been much of a sci fi person. Shock! (And yet somehow BSG is my favorite show, trust me, I resisted watching it for a long time.)
I really like Mickey and I loved the conversation Rose had in the diner with her mother and Mickey. I don't know, I like angst and dark themes and so I guess that explains why characters like Mickey and moments like that, the hard, sad, truthy kind of moments, are the things I crave. And so far this show has had very little of that. I loved the episode with Rose's father and the last two episodes were great, despite the presence of the Daleks.
My impression of Jack is overall good. He's very silly, and I like him. Unlike many, though, I don't really find John Barrowman all that attractive, so it's not a lusty kind of thing. I just like the character, which is good because... Next up is Torchwood, as per my agreement, and I have yet to decide whether I'll be watching season 2 of Who.
002. Speaking of sci fi shows that I never thought in ten million years I'd ever watch, I'm coming down to the end of season 2 of Stargate Atlantis, and I'm going to try to see if I can finish three and four before the new season premieres. Sci fi really needs to learn how to release their DVDs a little longer than two days before the new seasons premiere to give late-comers like myself a chance to catch up. That's just silly. I don't have any real comments on season two yet, other than I love all of the characters and I'm anxious to catch up so I can participate in fandom, at least as a reader, without fear of being spoiled. Not that it's that serial or cliff-hanger-y. But just to be on the safe side! Also, it does not surprise me now that, thanks to
barefoot_chick, before I ever watched the show I'd read fics with John and Rodney starring as dolphins or ice cubes. This show just lends itself to crack-tastic fic like that.
003. Creatively speaking, I'm a bit frustrated at the moment. I have both writer's block, and vidder's block. I was trying to work on a VVC non-attending premiere vid that I started ages ago, but I'm just completely unable to do anything with it. Maybe it's the pressure (zomg VVC!) or maybe I'll just never vid again. Hah! It's been since March since I released a vid. That's just... crazy. Writing has been more recent, so I'm not too worried there, especially after coming up with all those prompts at
rounds_of_kink! When the claiming goes up some time today, maybe I'll snag one or two and see what I can come up with.

I need another fandom to take over my mind :(

If you were able to enjoy any of DW S1, definitely watch Season 2. Ten's pretty great, and he brings a different vibe to The Doctor. You may like Torchwood, it's stil very cheesy, but a lot darker/existential/angstier that DW.

You should try to watch some SGA for sure. I don't know about SG-1 at all though. I do know that both of them feel like very peaceful fandoms to exist in.

I'm not even kidding, S3 of DW is GROWN UP. And S3 of SGA is the best overall season with AMAZING character eps. Trust me on this, dude.
Look at my icon, man. See how dark and thematically intense it is! That's the whole season! (Except for some stuff at the end which we won't mention.)

I am not committing to anything Who-wise right now. We'll see if I can get through Torchwood. It's in my contract, lol.
Besides, I really want to watch Life on Mars before the US version comes out and poisons us all with its crappiness. I saw the preview and thought, "oh god no."
Thank you for the visual aids. Hehehe.
ETA: Btw, I PROMISE I will TRY to watch more who after I get through torchwood. I WOULD ONLY DO THIS FOR YOU YOU KNOW!

EEEEEEE!!!! It's just, I honestly FEEL you on the matter, because I had the same problem. But S3 of DW really is different than what's on even right now. It's just super awesome.

I'm going to be marathoning SGA for the next few weeks though, so everything else is taking a back seat.

Yeah, I think what's most important when watching DW (and what most people tend to forget) is remembering that is is cheesey sci-fi. It's not BSG; it's not incredibly well-written or serious or intense. Sure, there are moments of those, but overall, that's not what the show is about. And I don't mind that. I don't watch DW fully invested in how "good" it is from week-to-week.
Torchwood is slightly less of the cheesey sci-fi/rubbery monsters stuff. It's a little darker and a little bit more intelligent (like, DW is more of a kids show and TW is much more of an adult show). TW will rip your heart out and make you cry more than DW will.
I can't reccomend S2 of Who to you on principle. I watched The Christmas Invasion and my skin crawled watching Billie Piper and David Tennant together. Truth be told, I haven't seen a single episode of actual S2 and it hasn't made a whole lot of difference in watchingthe rest of the show (unlike, say, missing a whole season of BSG). But I loved S3 and S4, since there was a much different dynamic between Ten and the companions.
P.S. Not to start any violent flaming my way, but in terms of people loving S2/hating it, I've seen that mostly the people who ship Ten/Rose intensely adore S2 and the people who dislike S2 are indifferent or dislike Ten or Ten/Rose.

If you liked Jack in DW you should probably be warned that he's a bit of a different character in Torchwood - a lot emoer.
And yay, you're a Mickey-fan! He's my favourite character from that show - I just want to cuddle him whenever he's on screen. ♥

I so can't type today. Or think. Or do anything.

I really do like Mickey a lot. But I have a feeling he is destined to be unhappy. Poor bloke. Hehehe.

3 → :( I'm sorry you're in a block. That's no fun. I really hope that when claiming opens up that you're able to write something from all the fantastical prompts you have. Finish your kara/leoben vid, it's so goood so far!!
