HAVEN 1.09, As You Were
I really enjoyed this episode a lot. I've been kind of wavering on this show off and on. But tonight they were definitely on.
I think the thing that sold me on it was that all of the regulars were there together in an ensemble setting. Plus I love that "we're stuck together, so we gotta deal with each other" vibe. It's one of my favorite things ever. [And honestly I love shows/movies with that premise as well, BSG, Firefly, Jericho, Clue, etc.] Plus the setting! A stormy, remote, island mansion. Super fun. They sure could have upped the creep-factor though!
I'm a little sad about Eleanor's death, but I wasn't too attached to her. I liked her well enough, just wasn't invested. It looks like they may be prepping her daughter to be the "new Eleanor" a little. She's a doctor, the Teagues are going to look after her, she's got roots in Haven and a friendship with Duke, etc. She seems like she could be a fun love interest [in future seasons] for either Nathan or Duke as a matter of fact. It seems like that talk of Audrey not having any friends may have been foreshadowing this character. I could see them becoming friends. Audrey needs a girl to hang out with!
I gotta say though, I am a little perplexed as to why so many folks actually knew who Lucy Ripley was but have ignored Audrey's investigation and haven't said anything.
How funny was it when they were trying to trick the audience into suspecting Nathan was the shape-shifter because he was being so quiet, but that none of the characters seemed to notice because he is always that quiet and stoic? Audrey thanking him for backing her up when he hadn't really done anything. Even Nathan being a little confused by that. Too funny.
I am curious as to what's "different" about Audrey. Why the shifter wasn't able to kill her and why Nathan can feel her touch. Definitely adds a little mystery to the character despite the fact that we still have very little insight into her as it is.
Speaking of that, I was a little shocked at Nathan kissing Audrey. It would have been sweet had she turned out not to be the shifter. I like the idea of them as a pairing but I'm not sure I fully buy it yet. There's something about Lucas' performance that throws me off at times. I guess it's purposeful because Nathan "can't feel anything" and so perhaps his personality/emotion is supposed to reflect that as well.
I am sort of disappointed that the show has gone as far to say that Nathan literally can't feel anything. If that were true he wouldn't be able to talk, drive a car, chew food without biting his tongue, shoot a gun, or function as a human being. Haha. That sort of bugs me. I wish they had focused more on the "I can't feel pain and thus am pretty much a superhero" aspect of it.
I have been informed today that I ship the wrong things [thanks 4LAD!], but I really love Duke/Audrey. I enjoy the way they play off of each other and how he really seems to like her, despite it not seeming to be in his nature. It creates a vulnerability in the sort of tough-guy/jokester character they've created. It amuses me that for how much of a "bad guy" he's supposed to be according to Nathan, we still haven't seen too much of that. I mean a few times he's been a smart ass and uncooperative. But he's definitely not Trouble with a capital T. Maybe just a little t. Regardless, Eric is so dynamic, and such a scene-stealer, that I really miss when Duke's not in the episodes.
Audrey: Man up!
Duke: That would be a lot easier if I STILL HAD MY AXE!
prettybutt also threw out the theory that Audrey and Duke may be long-lost brother and sister. Which, you know me flist, wouldn't deter me from shipping them at all. It could even propel me from casual shipping while watching, to writing the pairing.
I hope next week Audrey finally gets to learn a little bit more about her mother.
