Spooktober!
Oct. 1st, 2014 08:41 pmHappy October you guys! It's my favorite month of the year! (Or it would be if it hadn't been so humid today!)
So many things are happening!
A) It's October!
B) TV is back/is coming back and I am excited about that!
C) Dodger is still super adorable.
D) My parents are back from their lengthy Africa trip and so far are not showing any signs of Ebola! (Except my dad. Who, according to the CDC site, was displaying all but TWO symptoms last night. I was this-close to having to be quarantined. But it turns out it was just a kidney stone+infection. Go figure!)
E) I have finally gotten into a groove where I am consistently caught up with all my assignments so I have more time to kill on certain days at work.
F) OMGTVISBACK.
Some things I am kind of into/excited/thinking about at the moment. Possibly, but not necessarily related to the above:
1 part 1) The 100. You guys! I loved it so damn much!
1 part 2) I want to write fic for it but haven't written fic all year! The idea of jumping back in is so scary.
1 part 3) I feel like I should have a ficathon or something. Or just take comment fic promts. Do people still do that? I think I might do that.
1 part 4) Obviously making these up as I go along.
2) The Red Road. As far as Sundance shows go I didn't love it as much as Rectify (impossible!), but I did still love it. It's only 6 episodes and available on multiple platforms. Please try it! Jason Momoa gets to wear regular human-clothes. It's got Martin Henderson. (AKA cute guy from off the map, AKA cute boyfriend from The Ring). It sometimes offers a first-person perspective of schizophrenia. Which is just frightening. It was renewed for a second season!
3) I am not sure what to think about PLL right now. I feel like this show has waves where I am so into it that it's gross, and moments where I am like, "wait, what?"
4) The Gilmore Girls on Netflix. I have never watched this show all the way through. THE TIME IS NOW.
5) The Twilight Zone on Netflix.
6) Alfred Hitchcock Presents on Netflix.
7) Listening to The Twilight Zone radio dramas on my commute to and from work.
8) Listening to Lena Dunham's book and her weird voice on my commute to and from work. For the record I usually really like Lena, but this book is giving me mixed feelings about her. I am more convinced than ever that she is way more like Hannah Horvath than I ever could have imagined and certainly more than any real-not-fictional human being has any business being.
9 part 1) I glued pink and purple nail caps on my cat to keep him from scratching me. I realize cats aren't gendered the way we are, but do you think this will make him a drag queen? I certainly hope so. (I definitely should tweet this. I am doing that right now.)
9 part 2) I am spending way too much money on this cat. So broke right now.
10) I started a book club. Our first meeting is in 2 weeks. I have no idea how to run a book club. I am clearly in over my head.
11) I had my 1 year review at work. As suspected, everyone loves me.
12) I started a cookbook club at work. This is where everyone picks a recipe out of a certain cookbook to bring into work. This idea is genius if you love yummy food. Everyone should steal this idea.
13) Speaking of cookbooks, I got the Skinnytaste cookbook in the mail yesterday and was sad there weren't more step-by-step type illustrations. But I am still kind of excited about it. Only a few old favorites from her site, and most of them are new recipes. I think they're a smidge more fancy than her recipes on the site. Or at least the ones I usually make of hers. Hah. I think this will be next month's cookbook of choice. If BudgetBytes ever puts out a cookbook I will be the first in line. Whoever told me about that site is a genius and I owe you all my gratitude.
14) I am really sad because it's taken me way too long to write this post and now I have to go do "closing up things" in the library like a mature adult.
15)
ozmissage wanted some "spooky haunted house" book recs. I was of no use to her! Anyone got any recs?
16) Edited to add. LEVERAGE on Netflix! I only have one season to go and am procrastinating because I kind of don't want it to end.
17) Is The Blacklist as good as the pilot makes it seem?
18) So much for being a responsible adult.

Date: 2014-10-02 09:17 am (UTC)The Blacklist.... well it's kinda okay. I got bored in the middle of season one and then I binge-watched the rest of it and liked it again.

Date: 2014-10-06 07:11 am (UTC)Oooh, Martin Henderson! He's a Kiwi so I have to support him! I will watch out for the show you mention. ;-)
Good luck with your clubs! They sound fun, especially the food one!
I LOVE The Blacklist. It has so many twists and turns, and how can James Spader be anything less than wonderful! And also, Tom looks a bit like he should be Jack Shephard's younger brother...
Who wants to be a responsible adult all the time! ;-)

Date: 2014-10-06 12:42 pm (UTC)I do love his real accent. ;) This show is on Sundance and the first season (6 eps) is already over. I know not many folks have Sundance. I don't, so I bought the season on Amazon instant for like 9 bucks. Definitely worth checking out especially if you're a fan of his! I enjoy the entire cast.
Haha I am going to give The Blacklist a six-episode run to hook me. We will see how it goes. Then maybe I can get caught up with the current season.

Date: 2014-10-08 03:39 am (UTC)I'm used to hearing the accent of course! We don't get Sundance or in fact any American channels here, so I'll either have to wait or go find it online, I guess. But it'll probably be worth it!
Good luck with The Blacklist - I was hooked very quickly!

Date: 2014-10-08 07:35 pm (UTC)I am under the impression I watch lots of TV until I see a post like yours! lol!
I've never been in a book club. I like the idea even though I have noooo idea how they work. I hope you have fun :)
we're having a pot-luck dinner tomorrow, I need to make zucchini bread. yes, that was totally unrelevant information, just brought by the idea of a cookbook club!

Date: 2014-10-16 12:40 pm (UTC)I do watch a lot of TV, but in pockets. There are a couple of things my parents and I watch together. Like Grey's Anatomy or Parenthood. But generally I don't get the TV at all during the week. I don't like having one in my bedroom, so I don't own a television of my own, and since I live at home with retired/semi-retired parents, they basically have the television on at all times. Which is bizarre because they never used to be like that, first of all. And second of all it means if I want to watch, I either watch TV as I'm getting ready for work on my phone using network apps, Netflix, or occasionally streaming episodes I've bought from amazon instant/google play. I do this almost every day. (Either that or podcasts/audiobooks as I'm getting ready for the day.) And then alternatively I save up stuff on the DVR to watch once a week or once every other week when my parents are actually out of the house. I don't watch the news or do any channel surfing ever. That's just not a part of my life. My TV viewing has to be incredibly planned and specific, but I do watch a lot of different shows despite having limited access to an actual television screen. I used to download TV illegally a lot, and I'm not saying I've given that up. But I've been on my actual laptop less than ten times in the last 10 months. (Maybe 6?) So I don't really get the chance anymore. :(
We had our book club meeting on Tuesday and it was a small group, and one person didn't show up at all, (my next door neighbor, awkward!) but it went REALLY really well. It was mostly unstructured but a good friend of mine who had been in book clubs before was pretty good at guiding the discussion. We read The House on Mango Street for our first selection. And ALL of us adored it. (God, it's so good!) We're reading Feed by MT Anderson for November's book, and The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell for December.
Ugh I love zucchini bread. My office (library?) cookbook club sharing week is next week. REALLY excited.

Date: 2014-10-16 11:25 pm (UTC)I'm on a Gilmore Girls binge right now. Two to three episodes a night. I'm a few episodes into season 3 as of today.
RE: First year at work....Of course, everyone loves you. Was there any doubt?
BudgetBytes is an awesome website. I've gotten a lot of vegetarian recipes off of there.
I really haven't read any adult spooky books. The Stand scared the crap out of me, but I still like reading kids books. Mary Downing Hahn wrote Wait Till Helen Comes and The Doll in the Garden. Betty Ren Wright also writes spooky books for kids. I still enjoy reading Christina's Ghost, Ghosts Beneath Our Feet, and The Dollhouse Murders.
I've seen a few episode of Leverage and I really want to get into it. Parker seems like an awesome character.
The Blacklist is good. James Spader is excellent as Reddington.
