I really, really like this show. I even kinda like the things I don't like. WHAT? KC MAKES NO SENSE!

TrueBlood 1.03: I really liked it, save for some little things. I said to onelittlesleep that it's definitely one of those cases where the things I do like help me to unsee the things I don't like.


Things I'm not digging?
.Jason - It's not just that I find his behavior and personality loathsome, but I also find him totally uninteresting. Sigh. He can go away now.

.Lafayette, the walking stereotype - I don't mind that he's flamboyant. But not only is he flamboyant, he's into illegal drugs (and Vicodin apparently), plus he's a drug dealer, plus he's promiscuous, and not only that he's a prostitute and he runs a porn website. Have I forgotten anything else? I actually like his character, he seems like a nice person - but why does gay have to equate a social deviant of every possible distinction? And to top it off he sells vamp blood as well? Sigh.

.Bill, being totally weird in that first scene. I'm totally quoting what I said to onelittlesleep here: Maybe it was just.. bad characterization? They play him up to be Mr. Manners and then when he knows she's coming over to bring him information about the electrician he just lets those Creepy Creepsters answer the door and let her inside? Like, the Bill they set up in the first two eps would have totally answered the door and not even let her see those other vamps. He'd be all "let's take a walk and talk about how good you smell some more." So either he's hiding something, or he's... hiding something? I don't know why he'd go to feed on that guy in front of her either. That was just... weird. And creepy. And not good!

.Sookie's roaming hands - Okay is it just me or was it weird that she was getting all touchy feely with herself on his front porch in the middle of the day? I realize the location is a bit excluded, but still! Control yourself, woman!

Things I am digging?
.Bill, in general, but not in that first scene!

.Tara, I like this girl. I dunno what it is I like about her but I do. A hell of a lot.

.Sam, he's so cute!

.SAM, and sweet!

.Sam's dog/alter ego? - I'm really enjoying the guessing game we've got going on with him. I do think he's got a big secret of some kind. I just don't know what it is! First two eps I was convinced he was the dog! And then in this ep they showed him in the same shot as the dog so that blew the theory out of the water. But, maybe not. Maybe it's just all one big misdirection. I saw someone suggest that maybe he's a werewolf? Hmmm, intriguing. I don't care what he is, I like him! (And there's something about that dog either way!)

.Annnd... Sam!

I really don't like the brother either. I think it was just the casting. Tara is excellent and...sigh. I feel bad, because I love Rogue-girl, but man. I don't know if she's pulling off the role of Sookie and I keep feeling like all the awkwardness of her scenes (her budding sexual exploration in the front of Bill's house) is because I don't believe it, from her. The whole thing was weirdly cast, actually!

ALSO, I am so numb. I totally thought Chris Isaak was on the theme song.

Jason is boring and annoying in the books and his part isn't anywhere as big as it is on the show, so I'm seeing nothing good in the future for him, or I guess I should say us if his role remains as prominent.

I'm trying to remember if they explain that bit of character weirdness any better in the book (other than they were three vamps against his one and he knew he could never take all of them), but nothing is coming to me.

I would like to know if they explain it better in the book. He could have at least looked more... annoyed with them? Or apologetic towards her? Or you know, raised some objections when certain things happened? I dunno!

Maybe Sookie's glowy-forest aloooone time thing has to do with the effects of the vamp blood from ep 02 but there didn't really make that clear. I don't think it was in the book so I'm kinda lost. So much stuff in that ep that isn't in the books. o.0)

Wow... You nailed every single like/dislike I had, as well. Except with Tara - I started out just meh about her but seem to be liking her more and more. *nods*

I'm really wondering about Sam. I think that's the biggest mystery for me, right now. I've considered werewolf but I'm also thinking he's some kind of Watcher or guardian type, given the picture in his office of the dog watching over the girl. The barking and growling in his sleep could lead to either scenario. *shrugs*

I was telling alissabobissa that I thought that he might be there to watch over Sookie, since she is obviously something, otherly. (I mean, that whole chain tightening on its own? Yeah!) Of course at the time, the theory consisted of him being the dog too, haha.

I also worked around the whole being in the same shot as the dog problem. Maybe when he sleeps (or when he wants to) he can switch places with the dog? But that seems silly. Hahaha. I should stop trying to come up with theories and just watch.

Thanks for the theme song! It's so catchy and nice! I like Lafayette. I mean i like how the actor plays him. Very natural somehow. And i think a gay person would be 'ostracized' in a small, backward society, and being ostracized would maybe make him live up to it. Or something. Does that makes sense? *is too tired to process clearly* Jason is such a horndog it gets annoying. But maybe that's the whole deal. The opposition, cuz his sis is this pure thing. The porch... yes, the porch was weird. Hmmm.

Bill is always nice, but yeah, it's odd how he acted at the instance you mentioned. Unless hte presence of the other ones left him no choice? Dunno.

I do like the show, though. I do. (and i wish Tara could just pump down the volume in the acting, just a wee bit.)

Yeah I really like the actor as well. And I like his... well his personality. But all of those other little things do sort of bug me. Not in a judgmental "oh my gosh he's such a bad person" kind of way, more in a "are they kidding me right now?" kind of way. And I do get what you're saying, and I agree, people like him probably do exist, but I really hope they allow the character to be more than just that stereotype.

Jason is just... yeah. Blech. Hahaha.

I don't know, even if he was allowing them to act that way because he had no other choice, he didn't act very bothered by it at all. It just didn't come across the right way. Whatever they were trying to do.

I really like the show. It is just the beginning and so maybe we haven't even gotten to the meat of the story yet. I have high hopes. And am enjoying it in the process.

YES, the theme song is pretty wikkid. I am liking this show a lot. I dig that it's starting slow, not trying to overwhelm the viewer to be hooked then fizzle out. I sense a deep plot lies in wait. I have yet to see this past ep yet, TiVo'd and am catching up still on last weeks stuff. Yay good TV is fun mkay?

Now that I have watched it I read your post with spoilers. I was totally pissed at Bill in the first scene. NO WONDER Sookie got all cold. I woulda, too! I thought he must have been drugged or tied up or something. What a dink. But in general, I do like him and was pleased when he went to warn that hive to stay way. But we know that's not gonna last, yo.

I also love Sam. I want him to end up happy, though that would mean Bill will go away. The tension makes for nice plot n stuff. And I am also totally waiting for the warewolfs to make themselves known, too. What's a good vamp story without wolves?

Tara rocks the casbah. Can't get enough of that snark.

I gotta make me a True Blood icon, stat. In it's place, now, I will use Spike. You get the idea.
