BSG 4.11, Sometimes a Great Notion
- Throughout the episode there grew an increasingly dreadful feeling. I just felt gutted. It was like this chaotic, depressing, empty feeling. But then Tigh stepped up and was the man he has always has been [despite being a cylon] and made that feeling go away. I mean, I felt actual, physical relief at that moment in the conversation with Adama. I think that really is the mark of good storytelling - for me anyway.

- Seeing Adama like that was painful and hard to watch and made you kind of want to say "this looks better on Tigh, Old Man." But I don't know, I think that was kind of the point, wasn't it?

- Roslin. I feel that she's lost something over this season - with the cancer and now Earth. I don't know that she's fit to lead. I hate to say it but her scene with the scrolls, especially at the end, came across as, well... whiny. I didn't have a lot of sympathy for her. Especially after her lies and abuse of power in 4.0 - she can't even address her people and tell them the truth for once, when it really matters. I honestly don't think she should be president any longer. Am I in the minority here?

- Dee. I'm so glad I'm spoiler-free because watching it and not knowing was so powerful. I knew something was up due to her breakdown on the ground and the one-eighty back on Galactica but... that was just an amazingly-played scene. They did such a fine job. And the actress who played Seelix was phenomenal - she has never stood out to me before, tbh. And Alessandro was great here too. To me it's obvious why Dee did it, when she did it, how she did it. And this is what happens when you lose all hope. Also, seeing the numbers again, but with Lee this time? I think that was an interesting turn.

- I really liked the scene with Tigh and D'Anna. A lot. I was so ready for him to put a fatherly arm around her. Anyone else?

- Starbuck's big mystery. Ellen being the fifth. I'm not disappointed in either respect. I'm content to wait and see what happens next and what all this means. I liked that last scene with Tigh and I think Katee looked beautifully tragic throughout. The burning of her supposed body was an awesome scene and Leoben running away was scary as hell. So yeah, I'm just excited to see this all play out.

- I was a little dismayed/confused at the conclusion that the 13th tribe was cylon - period - just because those who were left, the ones that died in the holocaust, were cylon. Does that mean the 13th tribe originated as cylon? (Maybe the timeline is the reason for the conclusion?) Maybe it means that there was a cylon population on Kobol and they separated from the humans when they all left and simply went a different way?

- The four have been here before - literally. I liked that idea. I liked that they seem to be kind of playing out the same roles. (Reincarnation? It's my biggest theory.) I want to know more about this.

- I do have to say that I find it so depressing when I read reviews that are colored so heavily by ship preferences and sometimes, less-so, character preferences. I've seen that a lot around here lately. I just, I totally multi-ship and I can't really get into that head-space. It really taints everything. I won't say any more about it because I know we all fan in different ways. But I think it's a real shame.

→ I finally finished Atlantis. I have no review just... I'm going to miss it. When's the movie coming out?

→ Watched some movies this weekend. Wristcutters: A Love Story. I love Tom Waits. Biggest motivator to watch it. But I really, really, did not like this movie. Someone who liked it please explain to me why so many people like this? On the reverse, The Nanny Diaries was pretty cute and I really enjoyed The Lucky Ones with Tim Robbins and Rachel McAdams. Worth the watch, both of them.

→ I started watching The Magnificent Seven and it's pretty adorable so far. I could do with less extended gunslinging showdowns. Keep those shorter! They bore me! But I'm kind of in love with Ezra and I totally ship him and Chris. "Never run out on me again." COME ON!

→ Veronica Mars movie? I could totally get on that. I just need to finish watching season three now.

I loved new BSG. But even thinking about it now is too painful for me. It was such a powerful episode.

Anyhow, is that Kevin McKidd runing? I started watching GA again, just for him. He is so fine. Loved him in Rome.

It really was very powerful. It's why it's taken me two days practically to formulate a response to it! Hehehe.

And yes, that is Kevin McKidd running. (And Eric Dane on a motorcycle.) He's certainly a welcome addition to the cast. I just started watching again this season as well - not specifically for him, but his appearance in the premiere was outstanding and I'm sure factored in somewhere. Hehe.

Not sure I see the ending so - is it confirmed Ellen is the fifth? Because that is disappointing - what consequence can that have in the storline? But yet I'm glad Kara's mystery is going to be about something else. I liked her scenes the best in this ep. I didn't like Laura either, so I'm with you on that. I'm not sure I got her right at all this time.

Pardon my ignorance. A lot of this show evades me! I need to pay very close attention to what is to come!

Again I ask did you see Ellen at all? If you did then that's the ending. That scene with Tigh in the water is the final scene in this episode. So if you saw that you're good!

I don't know what's up with Kara. Haven't ruled out her being a cylon. I've always had a theory that there were 13 cylons instead of twelve - symmetry with the 13 tribes of kobol and the lost 13th colony and all that. We'll have to wait and see!

Yeah it's a difficult show to process at times. (In a good way, I think!)

i loved wristcutters; maybe it's because i love both patrick fugit and shannyn sossamon, and them together made a lovely couple? maybe because i loved the idea of "nearly being there", the sadness close to the end, and then the relief when there was still a chance?

I like Patrick and Shannon okay. I'm not their biggest fan but it's always nice to see them pop up on my screen. I did like the ending. Some of the stuff in the movie just seemed so incredibly random though. Pretty much throughout and especially that retarded ceremony at the end with the blond. But yes, I agree the ending redeemed it slightly. And I did enjoy watching Tom Waits do his thing. But for the most part I was just baffled at how this is so popular.

You are not alone in your Tigh admiration. It was amazing to see him picking up the pieces for Bill, for everyone really. I felt the same about Dee's suicide. They made it a very deliberate logical process and yet it was still so shocking when the moment came.

I'm into the Ellen and Kara mysteries too. I'm just loving 4.5, depression, chaos and all.

I agree with almost everything you said on the new episode. I, too, felt totally sad and almost depressed through most of the episode, but the ending lifted my spirits a bit.

Roslin, oh my! I used to be a huge fan of hers, I still am in many ways, but it's painful to see her being such a mess. She is no saint, that's for sure, but it's always painful to see one of your favourite characters falling apart like that :(

Dee, ftw! I agree with you here, I'm so glad I didn't read any spoilers on 4.5! The moment was shocking, utterly sad, and yet so powerful! I'm glad I didn't know anything about it.

I'm so curious about finding out more about Kara's mystery. What the hell IS she?

I pretty much agree with everything BSG realted you said. I wasn't disappointed with the episode, but I find it incredibly sad that so many people are writing off the entire rest of the series based on their interpretation of this episode.

I'm not sure if Ellen is the fifth cylon but I was chuffed to see her come into the picture as I always suspected she was one back at the start when she was all shifty. I can't take credit for this but someone on the fuse suggested that it could all be in Tigh's head that it was Ellen? Remember when he kept seeing Caprica as Ellen with the hair it could be like that cause it was from his perspective. I'm a little iffy about earth being populated by cylons I hope they explain it well. And as for Kara's duplicate dead body I'm totally clueless on that one lol

Yeah it's still stuck in "could this be a hallucination" type deal. I mean, in interviews it's said "yes, this is real." But honestly would they say if it weren't?

And I'm so confused about Kara, though I have had this 13th cylon theory (a symmetry thing) for a long time which would go well with it but the way they played the scene with her and Leoben made it seem like they were telling us she's not a cylon. Leoben wasn't afraid of the other four? Why would he be afraid of her? Unless he was just afraid because this was something that he didn't foresee or feel in advance? I dunno.

I'm in utter confusion for the most part but Kara made the episode for me. I can't stand Roslin and I didn't feel a bit sorry for her; maybe pity but not sympathy. Leoben running away? Yeah Kara's scenes were great. Though I did feel like there was some disconnect in the scene with Lee for some reason. Appearance wise. She's like drowning in those dress blues anyway.

I don't agree bout Ellen being the last person I wanted it to be. I mean, I can think of a lot more actually. I really liked Ellen for some reason. But I was hoping it was someone who was still alive and not someone who had already died.

I didn't expect it either. And the episode leading up to it didn't give it away at all which was good because someone spoiled me that the reveal would be in this ep. (Accidentally.) So I was sure that I would know right from the start. For some reason I did not think it was Dualla, despite her larger part in this ep. My brain didn't even go that way.

I mean, I'm not the biggest fan of hers to start with - I don't dislike her, I was just never particularly passionate about her one way or another - but this episode, I was like ... okay, I get it, this is a personal tragedy for you, but it's also a personal tragedy for every single person on the fleet, and you're their president. I was certainly feeling it during 4.0 too. She had her small epiphany when she almost but didn't kill Baltar. Which made you think she was headed for a turnaround but now this earth thing and I just don't think she's going to be able to recover her sensibility.
