THIRD. Subject lines should include a title (if you've got one), fandom, pairing, and prompt. (Prompt may be included in comment instead if it's a link to a song/picture, or if it's simply too long for the subject line.)

You pick a prompt from the master list above, write a fic based on that prompt in any obvious or abstract ways, then you post your fic as a comment using the guidelines outlined above. That's pretty much it. Let me know if you have any more questions. Have fun! :)

dollhouse - mellie/paul: fractured fairy tales

From: [identity profile] slartibartfast.livejournal.com
Once upon a time.

The princesses are always something they're not, aren't they? There's the peasant with the royal blood, the despoiled stepchild, the dreaming husk of a woman. They're riddled with curses and surrounded by evil.

Once upon a time, Mellie was something more than that.

She'd been something beautiful and real. She had lived her life and she had loved and then, just like that, she was broken into a thousand pieces.

The evil witch took those fractured fragments and put them back together again, but she kept her fractured, ready to pull apart and reassemble again and again and again.

And again, and then she was gone. The princess didn't get her prince this time. I was never her prince in the first place.

Once upon a time, she lived ever after. And it might not be happily, but it will be real, and that's what matters.

Aw this is very sweet and sad. Mellie/Madeline/November truly does have a tragic story.

Tunnel Vision; TSCC; Derek/Alison; tunnels

From: [identity profile] voicesinthemind.livejournal.com
There were so many damn tunnels.
That's where they lived, and ate, and slept. Barely seeing daylight.
Alison sometimes wondered what the world outside was like. Of course, she had been up there, but it was always dark and cold, the ground littered with human bits and machine bits. It seemed like there was always smoke too. It covered the sky like a heavy blanket; Alison couldn't even remember what the stars looked like.
She'd only been 4 when Judgement Day happened. Only 4 years old, her family burned to death and all alone in the world, surrounded by machines that wanted her and everyone else dead. She'd learned to survive, one way or another. But she'd developed a sort of deformity; everyone jokingly called it "tunnel vision". You began to believe that there was nothing you could do, that your efforts were for nothing, that nothing mattered. Key word there being nothing. The world was empty and dark. Tunnels. So many fucking tunnels.
But then she met him. First Lieutenant Derek Thomas Reese. And he made her laugh and smile, he gave her love and made her feel good. He gave her hope.
And now they travelled, and ate in, and slept together in the tunnels together. And for the first time in a long time, Alison was happy.

In the end, Jeff takes Jordan to Hawaii. He'd thought of taking Barry, maybe Tony, he'd even considered taking his ex-girlfriend Tara, but all things considered, the only person Jeff wanted to go with was Jordan.

Since the show ended they had seen each other a handful of times, pretty good for two people who lived almost 800 miles apart.

Jeff had visited her just before Thanksgiving, and she had come to Chicago for New Years. It had been strange at first, when they'd finished the show. Jeff had more than once found himself surprised each morning when she wasn't there, curled up against him. He also realized how much he missed her voice, and her stories, and all the small things about her that had been his anchor for for those three crazy months.

That show had brought out the worst in him, had made him feel he was turning into the kind of person he had never wanted to become, and yet she'd always been there, at his side, even when it felt like the entire world was against them.

So it made sense, at least in Jeff's mind, that he didn't see how he could take anyone other than Jordan to Hawaii. She was the only person he wanted to be with. It surprised him how much.

"Jordan." he called, and her face shifted from one of boredom to a wide smile when she saw him. She gave him a small wave, and she was quick to pull him into a hug when he got close enough.

"God, I missed you." she said, as they pulled apart. Unconsciously Jeff moved to kiss her cheek, and he was surprised when she turned her head, and met him with a soft press of lips.

The status of their non-relationship had been something they had successfully avoided speaking of in the last 6 months. They were as "touchy" as always, with some chaste kisses and one drunken make-out session on New Year's Eve, where Jeff had stopped them before they'd done something Jordan might regret. If there was one thing that Jeff wanted more than for their non-relationship to move to another level, it was for Jordan to never regret something that had happened between them. As painfully awkward as it sometimes was, Jeff was more than willing to wait it out with Jordan, until she was comfortable enough to let him get close.

The flight to Honolulu was long, and it took both of them awhile to get relaxed. Jordan had mentioned more than once that she was not fond of flying but Jeff had slipped his hand into hers, and let her hold on, long after the plane had taxied down the runway.

Five hours later they found themselves in the humid Honolulu airport, looking for the driver that was supposed to take them to their hotel. The resort was on the northern shore of the island, it was less touristy and more exclusive, lending itself to a more famous crowd who liked less attention when possible. It seemed strange to both of them that they were considered part of this category.

"I feel like a movie star..." Jordan whispered to Jeff as they sat in the back of the car, the scenery whipping by at 60 miles an hour. Jeff grinned at her, and put his arm around her shoulders, pulling her in close to him.

"You ready for 10 days of drinking, eating and making out?" Jordan laughed and blushed, swatting at his chest.

"Jeff!"

After checking in, the porter took them out of the main hotel and down a secluded path, lined with Banyan trees, to one of the private cabanas that was located directly on the beach. When they were finally alone in their suite, Jordan slipped her arms around Jeff's chest, resting her head against him. "Thank you for taking me here," she said, turning her head up to look at him. "I didn't really expect you to take me."

Jeff smiled and rubbed his hand over her arm and up to cup the back of her head in his hand. "I couldn't really think of anyone else I'd rather bring. Besides, I don't think Tony would be cool with sharing the bed."

Jordan giggled and Jeff bent his head to kiss her. She met him halfway, her mouth warm and pliable against his, and her mouth was sweet from the bubblegum she'd been chewing on the plane. "I guess we don't have that problem," Jordan said, between kisses. "But you better not get too handsy with me!"

(This is before)

Things that go as planned:

Oceanic Flight 815 lands safely in LAX, right on schedule.

They check into their hotel, something oversized and full of huge windows. The word luxury serves as an understatement here, but it’s all she’s really known for far too long.

Jin has some secret meeting in the morning, one that he’s rather vague about, and she smiles and kisses him goodbye.

Things that don’t go as planned:

She takes the money she stashed away from her failed exit strategy and uses some of it to buy a last minute plane ticket.

“Where to, miss?”

“Where is the first open flight going to?”

“New York City.”

Sun nods, repeats, “New York City.”

Her cell phone winds up in the nearest garbage receptacle, traded in for a cheap pay-as-you-go one, and she pays for everything in cash. This is her getaway.

A Ritual, A Wish, The Truth
stargate atlantis, rodney/elizabeth, 695 words, rated pg

Things have been quiet in Atlantis, no explosions, no death or dying, no invasions or hijackings, no thrilling heroics. Rodney couldn't be any happier, working all day in a temperature-controlled room, on a mostly pointless no-brainer energy-saving project in the lab with Zelenka, not having to explore new territories, no hiking, running, jumping, climbing trees, getting shot at, or any of his other all-time favorite activities, being kidnapped, betrayed, and stranded.

His delight at this unusual peace and quiet is only heightened by the fact that according to Rodney's watch, it's a particular time of year back on Earth. So when Ronon asks him if he needs anything on an upcoming routine supply run, he gets a wonderful, awful idea.

--

"You mind telling me again what this is for?" Ronon hefts the trunk of a large evergreen tree under his arm, the gate closing behind him.

Rodney rubs his hands together gleefully, feels a giggle bubbling up inside him. "You'll see," he tells his friend.

Ronon signals for Rodney to take the small end of the tree and Rodney complies, exaggerating the strength it takes him to lift the branches from the floor in true Rodney fashion.

Ronon deadpans his lack of enthusiasm. "I can't wait."

--

Later, over lunch, Elizabeth corners Rodney by the jell-o. "Rodney, you will not be decorating that thing in my gate room," she tells him, her eyes serious. Rodney just smiles, piles a heaping spoonful of green on top of his red jell-o.

"Festive, isn't it?" He points to the mound on his plate, scoops on some thick whipped cream for effect.

Elizabeth closes her eyes and sighs deeply. "Not in my gate room," she tells him sternly as she walks away.

--

Rodney decorates the tree in his quarters instead, hosting a tree-trimming party, with Teyla taking particular delight in the ritual. Elizabeth is a no-show.

"This is it?" Ronon asks, not particularly impressed.

Teyla ties on another bow and hands Carson large red ball. "Well, I think it is lovely, Rodney. It reminds me of some of our ceremonies back on Athos," she says. "Thank you for sharing it with us."

"You're welcome, Teyla," Rodney says, shooting a triumphant look at Ronon.

Zelenka comes out from behind the tree. "I think I've figured out the problem with the lights," he announces, holding up the ends of two power chords.

"Ah, good. We can plug them in as soon as Sheppard gets back with our nog," Rodney delights.

"What is nog?" Teyla asks.

Before anyone can answer, John's voice comes over the radio calling them all urgently to the gate room.

"We didn't even get to put the star on," Rodney pouts.

Teyla grabs him by the arm. "Come on, Rodney."

--

He should have known it would go like this. Things had been too good for too long for it not to end like this.

Another dead-end mission, another loss of life. This time, it takes a particular toll on Elizabeth. She's lost too many men, feels responsible for them all.

When they get back, after seven days in the thick of it, and after his routine visit to sick bay, cleaning up any scrapes and bruises, Rodney returns to his room to find Elizabeth bathed in the dim light of his tree.

He steps beside her. She sighs heavy, worn out.

"It's beautiful," she says, tears tugging at the corners of her eyes.

"Elizabeth," Rodney starts, apologetic. He shouldn't have given in to such childish whimsies. Here they are, floating in space, countless of thousands of miles from home, fighting for their lives and the lives of others nearly every day, and he goes and decorates a damn Christmas tree because he suddenly feels safe, normal even. "It was stupid."

"No," she says. "I mean it." She looks at him. "I've missed... this. I didn't want to admit how much."

Rodney reaches out and laces his fingers through hers, and he feels the weight being lifted, feels her muscles relax, her arm brush against his, her head coming to rest against his shoulder, and he hopes she gets her Christmas wish, whatever that might be.

Aww KC! You should so write this show more often because it sure sounds like you've got it down to a T! ;) Of course Ronon would be all deadpan about it, and Teyla thanking him for sharing it, and that first paragraph about Rodney's excitement over no mission. It's just all so perfect!
The last section is beautiful too. The switch to such a somber mood felt very natural and aww that last line!!

Too long for a comment. Here's an excerpt:

It's the day after the war. The three of them fall asleep huddled together in one of the Gryffindor dormitories because it's become habit. She wakes up with Ron's arm curled around her stomach and his breath against the back of her neck. She exhales slowly with a smile and feels warm all over. It's the first time in years that she doesn't need to worry.

Her eyes flicker to the window and she sees Harry, hunched at the window, eyes glued to the destruction below - blood stains on the grass and shards of glass which no one had the energy to clean yet. She can tell he's not rested though he slept through the night (she watched him through most of it – afraid if she blinked he’d disappear).

Harry looks so cold where he is.

She knows that this is her cue to check on him, but the sight feels so foreign to her now. She wonders if this is one of those times where Harry needed to figure things out on his own because only he would have the answers.

She's making excuses.

This is sign one. They're drifting apart.

Breathe In, LOST, Claire/Desmond, breathe

Date: 2009-09-05 08:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] missy-useless.livejournal.com
Her fingers curl into fists and pound against his chest, small and weak and child-like. He doesn't grab her wrists, doesn't try to stop her. Her eyes are bluer than he remembers. His name tumbles from her lips – again and again – mixes with “Who are you people?” and “What's happening to me?” and “Where is my baby?” Her voice is quiet now, hoarse from hours of screaming. (“Desmond,” she repeats, sobs, sinks against him.)

His arm circles around her waist, pulls her closer. He sees them out of the corner of his eye: Charlie pleads, “Mum,” and Penny bends down to take him in her arms, carries him back to the boat; he doesn't meet her eyes. Claire trembles. “It's all right,” he tells her, lips on her temple. “You're all right.” (I promise.)

I came back throbs against his throat, lies on his tongue like acid and delayed guilt and salt water. He almost says it (almost, “I came back for you.”) as if he hadn't let her down – them, he doesn't dare to think (three-year-long happiness on a boat: he doesn't see a drowning man anymore when he closes his eyes, doesn't think of broken promises and inaccurate visions, barely remembers his face, and Charlie is his son, a smiling toddler, oceans away from blame and debt; it hits him all the harder now) - as if he had been on this mission to save her all along, as if he was the hero, as if he was selfless and not cowardly and not too late at all. Jack looks at him, at her, brow furrowed, eyes wet and pained, a hand on his head.

He doesn't kiss her (he wants to, mouth-to-mouth because she drowned, is almost gone now, will be irretrievably lost in a few seconds, maybe). Her breathing stutters against his skin, against his jaw, and she buries her face in the crook of his neck, buries her toes in the sand, fingertips pressing down into his shoulder blades.

Later – days and hours and minutes – she stops crying. The boat is too crowded, but it's dark, quiet in her cabin (moments and waves and stars) and she stops crying and kisses him, gasps into his mouth, fights for air when he pulls away. She whispers, “I'm sorry.” Guilt gnaws at his insides. He nods and doesn't ask for her forgiveness.

(“I don't remember anything,” she says. He hopes that she's not lying.)

“Bones-”

Booth quickened his pace to keep up with Brennan.

“And once I get Ang to work on a reconstruction for this particular-”

Brennan kept on walking to her office, seemingly ignoring Booth’s pleas for her to turn around and listen to him.

“Bones-”

“Eventually Hodgins will have the specifics for those samples we took-”

“BONES!”

Booth finally figured out how to match her pace and swiftly caught her by the elbow.

“What? We are currently in the middle of an investigation, in case you have forgotten.”

Booth sighed, his shoulders heaving forward in an attempt to shake himself of the weight that was constantly pressing down on him.

“I know you…” he waved his hand vaguely into the air, grasping at words. His other hand tightened its grip on Brennan’s elbow.

Brennan finally turned all the way around, her arms crossed. Her body was tense; her mind running in a million different directions, already planning what they had to do in the next step of the case. And the next 50 steps after that one.

“Yes?” Brennan prodded Booth, knowing he had something on his mind. She never liked to guess what he hid behind his soft and twinkling eyes. So she unfolded her arms and tried to relax her legs; tried to stop them from being so stiff.

“Can’t you just wait up for one second?” Booth breathed out slowly, testing the affect his words would have on her.

“That’s exactly what I’m doing right now.” She said, puzzled. She stared up at him, her brow furrowed.

“No, that’s not what I mean.” Booth huffed. And then he made a decision. He leaned down and gently kissed her at the corner of her mouth.

Brennan leaned towards him. His grip on her elbow kept her steady.

“Okay. I can wait for you.” She smiled, leaning back.

Booth nodded, is lips barely parted and upturned at the corners. He was still surprised at himself. And at Brennan. He released her elbow.

She briskly turned and walked back to her desk.

“So, I’ll go make sure the bones are cleaned and assembled because I still have a theory about that hip joint that needs to be-”

Booth breathed in deep and let oxygen fill his lungs.

It felt like his heart was swelling, too.

“why miami?”

her almost-happy wrinkled nose stings familiar and unknown, a sharp feather caress he remembers from a dream. her eyes looks mischievous as she searches the police station. she looks like a naughty girl, caught in mischeif, proud and distressed - innocent. it hits hard, like that one bulliet he caught in another life.

he used to be in love with her.

"my ex-husband lives here."

they are in a police station but, somehow, he doesn't have it in him to be surprised anymore. barely amused at her nerve - marrying a cop while being on the run. he almost laughs. it was all about the adrenaline and just feeling something else than dread and long-distance loneliness. she had guts (he had to give her that) and loved to play with fire, ever confident someone else would end up getting burned. anyone but her.

he used to be so in love with her.

in another life - he would have taken one and a thousand bullets, if only she had asked. now, he drives a borrowed truck down dirty back roads and over state lines and ends up here, waiting in the sun until she gets out of the station, glistening white tears erased out and forgotten already. everything now - erased and forgotten already.

"he hates me."

well, of course he does. he snorts and offers his hand - no intended meaning whatsoever. he is not that different from that cop, is he? only he lies better to himself. she smiles, sad, resigned, okay. she takes his hand with a shrug and he shakes his head, once again amused in spite of him and her and this going back to what it never really was but should have always been. "well, shortcake, now that you got your daily dose of penance let's get out of here. this happy sunshine's givin' me a headache."

*gasp* You wrote Miami! How much do I love you for that? And this is beautiful and painful and everything. I love it all. Sawyer's kind-of amusement at her marrying Kevin while on the run, the repeated "he used to be in love with her" juxtaposed with the "he hates me," the fact that despite him saying he only used to love her, he's the one driving her to Miami and old lovers. Taking her hand at the end feels right, even though he says it means nothing. "Daily dose of penance" - they both do that to themselves. God, I love this all. She feels on the run again in this, and you know how much I adore to read Kate on the run.

::hugs:: THANK YOU.

sometimes, he gets an odd looks in his eyes as he sinks her body into the too-expensive mattress; he stares at her as if all of a sudden he recognized her, and her heart begins beating madly – what would he do, she wonders, arching her back and biting down a sob, if one day he woke up and remembered everything? he closes his eyes almost immediately, as if succumbing to wishful forgetfulness, and bites his bottom lip and rests his forest inside her neck, so he doesn't see her face. he swallows down a grunt and what did I do to get so lucky? and just like that, the haunting mirages disappear under the pillow.

she is seventeen years younger and she knows before this comfortable life in the big city, that would have bothered him. it would have made him feel guilty, dirty, responsible. he would have hugged her tighter, then, teeth and nails and coiling limbs, afraid she might fade away like she once did; he would have clung to her as painfully pleasant self-inflicted torture. now, here, somewhere else, he's rightfully in love. the cross he bears is so much lighter.

for three whole years she was all-knowing and omnipresent, a fresh-and-blood kind of ghost. she picked some tricks along the way. it worked halfway. those who needed to forget forgot.

claire can handle the truth and so she chose to bear it. she sees things more clearly this way. his eyes, stubbornly blind, are still closed. his big rough hand slides languidly up and down her thigh, so slowly that the callused touch makes her shiver. his hardened skin does not belong in a surgeon's hands, but if he wonders, he never says.

she kisses his forehead and taps her fingers over his slick chest, matching the erratic rhythm of his heartbeats. he is already asleep when she whispers into his ear, forget, both a promise and curse. so his shoulders don't carry the weight of the world ever again.

Esau could go to the statue at any moment and all would be forgiven.

He could whisper, I'm sorry, and Jacob would reach out his hand, hold onto him, and say, I know.

The lines between them would be undrawn, the boundaries uncrossed, their words unsaid. They could go back to the beginning: back to simpler times, back to hands on skin and lips on lips, back to a meeting of immortal minds and back to a time before civilisation intruded.

Esau rocks in the chair of Jacob's old cabin, his eyes closed, because he knows that it is his last point where the reconciliation will break down. Jacob needs these petty humans for reasons Esau will never understand - and will never wish to understand. In so many ways, Jacob is as weak and fickle as the humans he adores; he has forsaken his own kind, forsaken him, for them.

The chair creaks as he rocks, back and forth, back and forth. He knows where to find Jacob if he ever changes his mind - and, equally, Jacob knows exactly where to find him.

no one did. not even her. if she told anyone, they all kept her secret. richard. jacob. charles hides his eyes, ashamed, a fool, and thinks he wants to slap her but his hart is shattering in hate and rage and he can't breathe at all. he doesn't know why he says what he says, who he's trying to exculpate - maybe it's a claim. i know you, which doesn't mean i own you but sounds close enough.

standing on the dock, one hand flat on her stomach, the other fidgeting with the barrel of her gun (she heard noises and he scared her, appearing out of the night like a ghost of crimes past), she doesn't say a word to ease his pain. she doesn't bother making up fake apologies. there is no fooling anyone. she is doing him a favour by vanishing into the night to never see him again. he would never give up the island for anything or anyone.

don't you talk to me about sacrifice.

but she got it all wrong. that night he saw her go. that night he became his own dream and realized it was too little, too late. years, many years later, she told him over a cup of tea. "you would have never come with me."

he wishes he was an honest man. then, he wouldn't look away in shame. he would kiss her, unbound her grey hair and say, "you're wrong. i would have followed you anywhere. i'm still following you, ellie."

with every full moon he strolled down to the dock, pala ferry, occupied territory in an island that wasn't theirs anymore, but his and borrowed. he missed her. with every full moon. the night she left without a word of farewell. the first night she crept inside his tent, seventeen and named ellie. with every full moon.

It's too long so you can find the story at my journal. Excerpt below:

It’s been a month since the island left them stranded in Dharmaville and Sawyer still doesn’t know a damn thing about Juliet, not anything worth knowing anyway.

He’s picked up the little things. She takes two sugars in her coffee, she has awful taste in music, and she doesn’t like it when you act like a smartass after midnight. But these things don’t exactly make a person. He wants to know where she came from, how the hell she ended up here, and why a seemingly nice girl like her has such good aim with a rifle.

He’s a con man for Christ’s sake; he’s spent his whole life figuring out what makes a woman tick. There was a time not so long ago he could get a girl to tell him her social security number just by whispering the right sweet nothing in her ear. Juliet doesn’t work like that. She keeps all of her cards to herself.

It’s not just that he can’t crack her; it’s that she’s reading him like one of those damn Stephen King novels she keeps by her bed. He’s not sure how it happened, but he’s developed the unfortunate habit of spilling his guts to her every night while they sit together on her front porch.

They sit there side by side on that rickety porch swing and he talks. He talks about Tennessee, he talks about cons, and he talks about walking the train tracks on Friday nights with the other boys when he was a kid, he talks about how he was always the last one to jump off the tracks when the train came around the corner. He tells her how he could feel the heat coming off the engine right before he moved.

And he talks about Kate. Not often, but every now and then she comes up and he knows he gets this far away look in his eye and his voice gets wistful and it pisses him off, but she never says anything about it. She just listens with this calm expression on her face, only talking when she’s got just the right thing to say.

This is set in the AU 'verse of You Can Forget All Your Troubles, and I took Claire and Juliet to a Ceroc dance class because it's the only kind of dance I know!

Juliet's hand feels clammy as Claire leads her towards the dance floor. She hasn't danced in years, and even with several other couples spinning and laughing together on the floor she feels self-conscious. Everyone will be watching them; with Claire, everyone is always watching them. She's like a siren. Juliet's used to being a wallflower, to taking a drink and hiding in her seat. She isn't sure how Claire managed to persuade her to come to a dance class in the first place.

"Relax," Claire says when she turns to face her after they've reached the wooden floor. Her heels click, barely audible above the music. "We're here to have fun - I won't do anything scary! Just follow my lead."

It's easy for Claire to say. Juliet imagines that she was singing and dancing since she was born. It comes so natural to her, this elegance.

They sway slowly, facing each other, as Claire closes her eyes to listen and catch the beat. Juliet stares at her, more in awe than she means to be; since their first meeting in a hotel bar six months ago, she's never stopped being entranced. Not for a single second, and not even with the physical distance that sometimes mars their relationship.

"And here we go," Claire says, turning her hand in the signal that says it's time to start. They both take a step backward, connected only by their hands, and Juliet struggles to make her brain disengage. Thinking isn't helpful for dancing.

Claire leads as if it's as easy as walking, her hand spinning and turning Juliet around the dance floor. Juliet can faintly recognise some of the moves she's been taught, but she's so busy following and trying not to trip over her feet that she's too stressed to enjoy it.

"I'm sorry," she says when she forgets to spin at Claire's signal. "I'm really not good at this."

"You're doing fine. Don't worry about it." Claire smiles like a sunrise, and it's almost enough to make Juliet leave her worries behind. They resume, and even if they are just connected by a single handhold, it's starting to feel as if they're the only ones around. There is nobody else in the room; maybe they're in Juliet's bedroom, alone. Nobody is watching.

Claire twirls her in so they stand side-by-side, Claire's other hand around Juliet's waist, and they rock together for three beats. It feels like the longest time in the world. Juliet can smell the sweet scent of Claire's body and vanilla perfume, sweet enough that she wants to stay tucked here at her side for eternity. It doesn't last nearly long enough at all before Claire is spinning her out again, the world going past in a dizzying rush.

She's better at following than she'd thought she would be; Claire is far better at leading than a fragile girl like herself should be. Considering the tempo of their relationship, Juliet wonders if she ought to be surprised at all.

The song comes to an end and Claire spins her in against her body one last time, with a hand at the small of her back to help dip her. Juliet falls backwards with only Claire there to support her and bring her back to her feet. She's breathless and she thinks that they should look ridiculous, with Claire so much smaller than she is, but Claire is smiling right at her and Juliet can't help but dip her head down and smile back.

"Thanks for the dance," Claire says, not letting go of her hand. "Want to grab a drink at the bar?"

Grabbing a drink offers the possibility of hiding from another dance for a little while longer; Juliet gladly accepts. As she glances back over her shoulder at the rest of the dance floor, she takes a deep, steady breath and thinks that she needs to learn enough to be able to lead as well. She wants to see Claire twirl.

this is gorgeoyus and so much better for how it fits that wonderful amazing scenario you created in your other story. it follows so nicely - insecure Juliet and determined Claire and the rhythm and how sensual it is. I love this. It was truly perfect!

He makes good on his promise.

“I’m a man of my word,” Jeff insists, even if they both know that phrase means next to nothing anymore. They’ve all seen what good someone’s word is in that house. And Jeff is a good guy, in her eyes, but his word got left in the dirt along with everyone else’s.

She still smiles, a little too wide.

There is a steak dinner, and she can tell that he doesn’t completely believe that she’s actually going to go through with it until they’re sitting in a restaurant and she’s telling the waiter “medium rare” with an odd little sense of joy.

“You underestimate me,” she chides, a warning she’s repeated far too many times in the past few months, except it’s a teasing tone here. Laura would say that the stakes are lower here, but even she doesn’t buy that. There’s something in the air, and she’s going to label it possibility with apprehension working a knot in her stomach, maybe even her fingers crossed – for what outcome she doesn’t know.

His answer is a nod, simple, wordless either in his acknowledgment or his agreement.

It’s kind of both.

Dinner lasts a little over an hour, and their wine glasses have been refilled and emptied more times than absolutely necessary. His eyes find hers over dim restaurant lighting and she knows what he both wants to ask and is mildly afraid to.

The good guy. The one who kept his hands to himself, for the most part, through three months of having a hot blonde pressed up against him, only to have her split three days after the finale. It bothers him; so much more than what he lets on in front of the cameras, interviewers who want to know ‘was it real?’.

Laura has found that there are far too many definitions of that word, and she can’t honestly tell you where the line between what was truth and what was a lie, what was personal and what was game, starts and ends.

In a way, it feels like they’re all still playing.

“You want to come back to my room?” She asks, the question she knows is on his lips, because she never needed the guy to make the first move and the wine hasn’t done anything but exacerbate the itching in her fingers.

Briefly, she wonders if he’ll even go through with this.

The answer comes in the form of his body pressing hers into the closed door to her hotel room, hips pinning hers, the hand that isn’t braced against the wall coming up to tangle in her hair (rich chocolate brown, and wishes that she didn’t think that was significant here). It comes in the way that he doesn’t take his time when he’s pushing the straps of her dress (tight, red, she looks good in red) off her shoulders, a pool of cinched satin that falls around the black stiletto heels she’s left to balance in. It comes while she’s spread out on the bed and he hesitates, lingering inches from her lips, and she puts her hands on his shoulders, tense muscles underneath her fingertips, and maneuvers them so that she’s on top, straddling his hips, and they’re moving.

Later:

He does not make a grab for her, arm across bare waist, and she is content to lie on her back, looking at pristine white ceiling in a way that she kind of got used to for three weeks somewhere in July.

“Did you ever think we’d be here?” And she wonders when the hell he became philosophical or deep or maybe just started acting like this was some romcom that they were accidentally living (she’d called him ‘Days of our Lives’ back then, before she realized that there was something there beyond a pretty face).

“No,” she says, and it’s ironic that that right there is more of a lie than the next part of her sentence; she still says it like she’s merely teasing him, “I knew you wouldn’t win.”

His laugh is only half bitter. “Nope. Wasn’t in the fucking cards.”

“I knew you’d win jury prize though. America likes eye candy,” she adds, light tone to contrast his.

“Oh, is that all it was?”

“Why do you think I voted for you?”

“Because you knew if I won you could twist it into a free dinner.”

“Two.”

“Whatever.”

She isn’t quite sure whether she should be anticipating a repeat of tonight, or avoiding one. Conflicted has become an all too natural state of mind for all of them.

no matter how many times jack tells him, sawyer doesn't care. sawyer doesn't listen. sawyer should know better than most that three years back makes all the difference in the world, but that was that and this is something else. the chains tore her apart and she died, crushed and alone and in pain and everything changed - right that moment. he thought they changed before. a bear cage and a make-believe pacemaker and boar hunting, this time for meat and company, and exploding houses and a goddamned leaking helicopter. but he was wrong - things changed later. three years too late, thirty years ago.

she died and sawyer watched and then he stopped thinking. sawyer stopped listening. sawyer stopped feeling.

it takes for a week-long hike and a furious-looking gun pointing at his face and her blue, beautiful narrowed eyes as she toys with the trigger for him to remember. indeed - three years back make all the difference in the world. jack shakes his head and doesn't say i told you so, you fool, because secretly he feels sorry that she doesn't remember.

everything has happened before.

they take kate first. a gag between her teeth and a barrel against her throat and sawyer's hands shake against his will. if you want her alive, tell your friend the surgeon there is something he can do for us. sawyer does as asked, my pleasure, he defies. he looks at kate one last time and then turns away and closes his eyes until the jungle is all but a deep black hole, swallowing time and space and ex-lovers and sour dirty memories.

things happen fast when he passes on the message. john blows up the submarine and catches a lost, stranded bullet in the spot where his kidney should have been. they all sigh, trapped. sayid suggests fighting back, but they all too tired to care about winning.

jack tries to save them all and ends up in a cage. sawyer doesn't listen and wakes up in a dark cell with chains hanging from the ceiling. he closes his eyes, blinded by the darkness and the rattling sounds, and prays he can stop hearing her screams. when she vists, he breathes out relieved and takes the shocks gladly and chokes down grilled-cheese sandwiches that taste too much like home and smiles smug and defiant at her smirk and says, hiding away his tears, "keep them coming, blondie. we and me both know you do it because you want me."

the taser gun has left a scar on his shoulder by the time jack and kate find the way out of their cage.

set after "Best Prom Ever"

---

The boys go down to McLaren’s afterwards. The guys’ night out they intended to have and failed at, somewhere between stuffing wedding invitations and delivering sheet music, plus Barney just spent a few hours surrounded by jailbait and managed to keep his hands to himself, so he’s more or less intent on getting a reward for that.

Robin, on the other hand, has half a dozen dresses laying on Lily’s bed, and she’d really, really like to change out of this one before she goes home, so Lily and her head back to the apartment early.

“I really hope the dry cleaner doesn’t ask what got on this,” Robin says, looking down at the side of her dress that’s taken on a brownish-yellow tint. Of course she got puked on at prom. Of course. She needed that clichéd teenage nightmare.

Lily frowns. “Let’s hope not.”

Even if their little talk in the bathroom had done something to reassure Robin that everything was okay, Lily’s general mood on the walk up here had managed to at least partly reverse it. She looks like she’s living primarily in her head right now, and it worries Robin. “You’re sure you’re okay?”

She catches Lily’s attention, and she bothers to glance over at Robin as she situates the blue dress she’d almost left in earlier that night on a hanger. “Yeah, no, I’m fine. I’m great,” a smile accompanies that last part, so that it doesn’t sound sarcastic, but Robin still gets the feeling that it’s a ruse. She knows fake cheerful Lily.

“You know you can still travel,” Robin starts, anyways, focusing on undoing the straps of the heels that are absolutely killing her feet. “It’s not a death sentence or something; it’s Marshall.”

With the dress successfully hung up, Lily turns to face her. “Kind of optimistic for someone who isn’t into marriage.”

“I didn’t say it didn’t work for some people.” Satisfied with the shoes that now lie in the corner of the room, she sits down on Lily’s bed and starts gathering her own clothes to take back with her, separating them from Lily’s. It’s a mess of jewel tones, satins and silks, fancy grown-up clothes that had no business at a tacky high school prom. “I’m just saying you can still have your dream job, you can still paint. And you already had your lesbian experience.”

She scoffs. This little ‘pfft’ sound that oh so casually makes it through barely parted lips, and Robin looks at her with a raised eyebrow. “Oh come on, that was more like dipping your feet in the pool than a lesbian experience.”

Robin finds herself half-waiting for Lily to take that back, or add a ‘but’, something, but she doesn’t. “That so sounded like a dare in the making.”

“What? A dare?” Lily asks, all surprised in a way that she can’t tell if it’s feigned or not. “There was no dare.”

“Sounded like a dare.” She pauses, to stand back up again, and she’s pretty much walking toward Lily without a freaking game plan, which would be really helpful to have at the moment. Right now she’s got her mind wrapped around slutty teenagers all over each other, Barney’s words of ‘go ho or go home’ in her head, and just a little bit of hurt pride.

It’s all apparently lead up to Robin leaning in, tilting her head so that they don’t bump noses, and kissing Lily, who changes from stunned to smiling against Robin’s lips within the first second. This time there is no chaste peck on the lips. This time she slips her tongue between Lily’s lips, tasting the crappy non-spiked punch from the prom and resisting the urge to giggle against her mouth, because this whole thing is ridiculous. Many, many shades of ridiculous.

But it’s prom. Not theirs but someone else’s, and as far as she’s concerned that’s still permission to do crazy things.

When Robin pulls back, self-satisfied, a tinge of nervousness even so, she says, “In my defense, I think that cough syrup did give me a buzz.”

Lily laughs, shaking her head, and it’s nice to know that this isn’t going to change anything between them. It’s just this thing they did, maybe for a good cause (because at least now Lily doesn’t look as conflicted as she did when they walked in here).

“Hey, it might not have been an experience exactly, but I think it counts for something.”

“Yes, you are a very convincing lesbian.”

It’s her turn to laugh now.

his life chouces are laid out before him when he's only seventeen. he chooses wrong willingly because nothing - darkness and solitude and remorse and crucio - hurtas as bad as she does. "i didn't want to fall in love with him," is her excuse.

his heart was broken before he said it. you dirty mudblood. they belonged to different worlds and different times (he'll be a hero after she's dead) and yes, they did, but never were meant to collide. she was too good for him and he was too much of a quiet, secretive death-eater apprentice.

years later they meet in a desolated battlefield because such are the burdens of war. his knees buckle and his wand quivers and he can't speak or breathe or fire a timid hex. he can do nothing but run like a dirty slytherin coward while potter the brave hero wins yet another battle. severus hides. the dark lord punishes and the dark lord doesn't value cowardice and the dark love never forgives. but severus only thinks of her as the curses run through his blood and feels shooting jealousy and frantic spite boiling in his stomach so fast and so hard that the bright red light rebounds.

the dark lord squeals and then he knows, this path of dread and death will sooner of later detour. because the dark lord never forgives and the dark lord doesn't keep his promises.

but severus does.

she comes to him in the last minute. "i took care of him," he says. he gave his life for potter's son. the dark lord never forgives but he almost smiles - one small victory.

her smile is soft and bright and loving and it makes her look like a teenager as she nods. "i know, sev. i know."

Ianto told Jack he would forget him. Jack swore he wouldn’t, but time doesn’t care about the promises of men.

A week after Jack takes to the stars he finds himself in a bar on some planet where the sky runs orange and the clientele tends towards the blue and scaly. There’s a man there though, a human just like him and from the back…from the back it’s Ianto. Sturdy shoulders, perfect hair---but then he turns and the nose is too big and the laugh too loud and Jack feels like an idiot.

Two months later he’s in Paris and it’s 1894. He orders a cup of tea at a café, but he can’t bring himself to drink it. He sits there, his back pressed against the hard wood of the chair and lets the sharp smell tickle his nose and watches as the steam curls towards the sky.

Six months pass and he returns to Cardiff, only it’s 1982 and Ianto’s eight years old. Jack finds him in a park, sitting under a tree with his nose buried in a book. He thinks about crossing the distance between them and telling the little boy to steer clear of a Captain Jack Harkness, but he knows it would do no good. Some things have to happen.

One year to the day and Jack takes a trip to England on the night of the blitz. He finds a scared, young soldier cowering in an alley and presses his lips roughly against the other man’s.

“It’s the end of the world, friend. What do you say we go out in style?”

He takes the boy to an abandoned hotel and they spend the night in bed while bombs rain down around them.

The next morning he takes the boy’s coat and leaves his own in its place. He can’t stand the sight of it anymore.

Two days later he wants it back, but he’s six hundred years and two galaxies away. He tilts his head up to stare into the harsh light of two suns and knows he’ll never see it again.

Five years and he returns to Torchwood to get his job back. Gwen is long gone by now and he wants to think that’s for the best. He has a new team, all young and eager. He imagines each of them dying and broken. He knows it won’t make the inevitable any easier, but it’s worth a shot.

Eight years and five months later he’s having a perfectly good day. He just saved the world (again) and he’s rewarding himself with a pair of crazy kids from Bristol. He’s just poured himself a drink when it hits him. It’s Ianto’s birthday.

He tries to conjure an image of the man in his mind, the way his lips would curl into a hesitant smile, the droll sound his voice would make when he was frustrated, the way his fingers felt trailing down Jack’s rib cage. The picture is fuzzy. His eyes were blue, weren’t they? His voice wasn’t that rough…that was Owen, wasn’t it?

He hears one of his companions calling from the bedroom and pushes the thought to the back of his mind.

Twenty years and Jack drinks a cup of tea with his granddaughter and laughs and doesn’t think of Ianto at all.

Thirty-two years and twelve days and he’s slipping into his coat when a memory comes floating back. He can almost feel someone behind him, warm breath on the back of his neck, gentle hands straightening his collar.

Sixty-seven years and he’s running past a suit shop in London when the sight of a mannequin in an immaculately tailored suit makes him pause.

Ninety-eight years and he hears someone calling “Ianto!” on the street. He turns and watches as two men embrace. He says the name under his breath and the letters feel awkward on his tongue.

Thousands of years later, he’s not even a man anymore, but he still persists. He tries to hold onto his life (his lives) and all of the people that made them up, but there are too many faces and too many names and they all run together in his mind now. There’s a girl who sounded like a flower who gave him this curse. Another girl, this one with a crooked smile that was never his. A man who gave him a jacket and a name (but which name?). A brother, didn’t he have one of those once?

And someone who asked him to hold on to him. Or maybe he told him to let him go. He's not sure anymore.

But there’s a doctor. He still comes by sometimes. That one he always remembers.

But the rest…

The rest he forgets.

he smiles at her in a way that makes her toes curl inside her track shoes. "i remember the day i met you, more than thirty years ago, like it was yesterday. i knew that instant that it would be you."

she feels tempted to snort, you liar, how can he talk about instants or yesterday? those concepts are already faded to her eyes. "you did?"

he gives one step forward, nods, and grabs her hands inside his; she knows it's only to keep her from running so she moves even closer. she isn't scared of this. it makes her feel triumphant that his knowing smile becomes flirty and playful when he's only inches away. "it might take a while getting used to, but you're learn to live like this."

will i? she feels her blood pumping, running madly beneath his thumbs as they press the tender skin of her inner wrists. she never liked fantasy stories but she thinks maybe her heart shouldn't be beating anymore. for how long, how manythousands of years before it gets exhausted and stops? the way he is looking at her, getting closer and closer without moving one finger, she is sure he is reading her mind. the realization is almost comforting.

"this is a gift, kate. i know it might not seem that way right now, but believe me, you'll learn to appreciate the extraordinary value of what jacob has granted to you."

this time she laughs, but she doesn't even think about pulling away. forever? eternity? she looks up at him and holds his deep black in hers for seconds and seconds and seconds. "you're wrong." there is nothing else she can say. forever is nothing but penance, and she always thought there's something quiet and peaceful in being justly punished.

foreman is somewhere else at the other side of the country, making a career, digging up skulls as he burns bridges – forgotten. wilson holds his ex-girlfriend’s hand while her brain collapses and her body fades and he remembers amber with bittersweet tenderness. he takes her home and calls her remy and when cuddy visits, he smiles apologetically. "she's out for the night." the drugs are strong and some days she doesn't recognize him. she calls him eric and talks to her mum, says i'm sorry and i regret the drugs and the silences and my sick flawed genes.

sometimes she screams. sometimes she hits and kicks and punches. sometimes she stares blankly at the wall and sometimes she smiles a wordless thank you. allison told him once, when a good person dies, there should be an impact on the world. somebody should notice. somebody should be upset. he told her it wasn't worth it. remy's eyes are bright and green some days – still alive. some days she smiles. some days she calls him james and kisses him and tells him everything is going to be okay, and he realizes – he was lying without really meaning to.

it took one year and half of ruthless disease and yet another broken deserted heart. he only as a pocketful of those left but he doesn’t mind the cost. he was there to say goodbye, and that’s more than most can say. every single second he had of her was worth it.

The last few months he starts to feel a little like a pervert. One of those guys who stalked the Olsen countdown clock online. He has his own internal clock.

Six months, three months, one month, ten days until Dawn is eighteen and legal.

She was technically legal at seventeen, and even Buffy had been okay with them dating then…after she’d gotten over the shock and threatened his life if he every hurt her little sister.

He was the one that said it had to be eighteen. It just felt…right, the age where Dawn could really make her own decisions and he hoped she’d still decided on him.

The last few months he’d made himself scarce, even going as far as to travel with Andrew to stop himself from crossing the line. Now he was back, gift in hand, waiting to see if all the waiting had been worth it.

The silence in the house freaks him out and he creeps in slowly, jolting when he sees Dawn sitting on the couch, all dressed up and waiting…for him.

“Happy Birthday,” he says, reaching out to give her the gift.

She ignores his hand and runs straight for him, wrapping her arms around him and sealing her mouth against his.

Yes, finally, yes is all he can think and she smiles when he groans.

“The only present I want is you,” she demands, “naked.”

Oh yes.

the sound of the unlocking and the lift away
harper's island, shea/sully, 539ish words, pg-13
*spoilers through the finale*

They've only been on this god forsaken island for three days and Chloe has already proven to be an endeavor doomed from the start. Sully allows himself some time to sulk, not used to being so thoroughly rejected, but by dinnertime he's convinced himself it's her loss. Plenty of fish in the sea, as they say.

Apparently he's right, because a few beers and one too many glasses of champagne later, he's pulling Shea Allen out the party. His hand wraps around the soft skin of her wrist and she stumbles after him down the hallway and around a corner, hidden by shadows and the rumble of music. Sully's hand slides up the outside of her thigh, under the fabric of her dress and Shea blushes.

She wants to tell him she can't, she's married, she loves her husband but the words don't come. Sully's lips cover hers and the moment is gone. Shea threads her fingers into Sully's hair and kisses him back, all teeth and tongue and a greediness she hasn't felt in years.

---

Richard's affair comes to light just hours after her father's death. Blurted out in a mess of anger and betrayal, her sister's last-ditch effort to preserve the dignity of her father's memory. Shea can't blame her, but it's almost too much to handle.

She wants to scream. She's angry and ashamed and relieved all at once. They hadn't been the couple they once were for a long time now. Too long.

Shea cries and wonders when she became this woman, watching her family fall apart before her eyes. The worst part is, once all the blame is divided up and handed out, a fair share belongs to her.

That night, after Madison finally falls asleep, Shea goes to Sully's room. He lets her in without a word.

---

After that, everything happens so fast. It's a domino effect and all anyone has time for is finger-pointing and running. They can't stop running. Sully can feel the exhaustion deep in his bones, seeping past the fear and shock. He hasn't put his gun down since it all began and he hates that the only way he'll know for sure if he can trust someone is if they're dead.

Except for Shea.

Sully thinks maybe she's the reason he's just been sitting here, waiting, doing nothing while that old rusty motorboat hangs from the ceiling like salvation.

“We're getting off this island,” he promises, once and for all.

---

The motor purrs to life. Shea always hated the smell of gasoline.

“You have to come with us.” She grips Sully's hand, pleading.

The water is cold, a jolt to his system and he has to keep his teeth from chattering as he shakes his head. It takes all his will not to climb into the boat after them, but this isn't just about him anymore. (A first time for everything)

So he sends them off alone, promising Shea that Trish will know her sister loved her.

---

Henry's words sit sour and evil in Sully's gut and he can't help wanting to believe they're all lies, right until the very end.

His gun clicks, empty, hollow and he knows it's over.

Sully had watched from the shore until Shea's boat got smaller and smaller before being swallowed up by the fog.

It was worth it.

This was great. I never would have thought of a Sully/Shea pairing but you totally pulled it off. It shows snippets and scenes of how they could have had their affair on the island -- the mention of Chloe is perfect, as was Richard & Katherine's affair. By giving Sully a bigger motivation to get Shea off the island in the end, that makes his final few scenes even more bittersweet. Great job with this!
