Random question, flisties:

I recently watched something, a TV show or a movie, in which the characters have a conversation about the movie Groundhog Day. (Which is totally an awesome movie, by the way.) They talk about how Phil wakes up every day on Groundhog Day, and he tries everything he can think of to break the cycle, and then finally one day he gets out of the loop. I know the question is posed, what does Phil do different on that last day to get out of the loop?

Now, I can remember neither the show/movie this came from, or the way they answer the question. I can't tell which one I want to know more. It's killing me. Ring any bells?

Anyone?

That sounds like a conversation that might be had in Gilmore Girls. Or possibly in the Mystery Spot ep of SPN. Or maybe on Chuck.

And doesn't he be a nice person for once and that's what gets him out of the loop?

I think he tries to be really nice and helpful once and that doesn't work exactly, he's still doing something wrong? I don't know exactly. I couldn't put my finger on it, I've seen that movie a bunch of times too, lol.

Maybe Gilmore Girls, though I only watched the first two episodes recently. Nothing else.

Hmm...

I could swear it's the SPN ep, Sam trying to figure out how to get out of the loop. But then I'm known for my crappy memory, I forever ask my beta "In what ep was the scene where (....the slimy demon was thrown off the football team....)?" So maybe not SPN...

Eh, probably not considering I haven't watched a single supernatural episode in over two years.

Yeah he does. I was reading recently about all of the religious/philosophical schools of thought that kind of go hand-in-hand with that movie. It was really interesting.

I saw it when I was young, but I think it was because he transformed over time. He accepts his life and understands what a relationship can give him.

Yeah that's definitely a part of it. I love that movie, could watch it over and over.

Oh man, I know exactly what you mean. It was something I just watched recently where they had that conversation. I'll have to think about it & get back to you, but it's right on the tip of my tongue...

Yay! I'm so glad I wasn't hallucinating. I'm trying to think what I watched lately, I marathoned the end of s3 & beginning of s4 of Friday Night Lights and the last 6 eps of Dollhouse so it could be either of those. Dayln suggested maybe Community?

I have no idea. I tried googling to no avail. Even my google fu is failing, lol.

Well, I haven't seen any of those. Hmmm. What the heck have I watched recently. Modern Family? Do you watch that?

I do watch that... but I don't remember if it was in it or not.

*scratches head*

I just asked my family and they said Modern Family also. I don't know what else it could be because I haven't watched much over the past week. It would be in eps 7-10 somewhere (because that's all I've seen).

I am going to have to check those episodes. Thank you!

The annoying part is that I know exactly what you're talking about, but I can't remember where I remember it from. Let me know if you find out? This is going to bug me, lol.

That's two of you who know what I'm talking about.

D'oh! You'll have to try and remember. It's bugging me. (And I have a feeling it's going to bug the two of you too if one of us doesn't remember soon!)

As with many others, I know the conversation that you speak of, but not where it came from. ARGH!

Oh Groundhog Day, it has been so long since you and I last met.

We all need to come up with a spreadsheet of all the shows/movies we've watched all month and see which cross paths, lol.

This is frustrating. lol.

Wait, is it the Attic episode of Dollhouse, when Echo is talking to someone I won't mention in case you haven't gotten to that episode yet, about the things that happen in the Attic that I won't mention in case you haven't gotten to that episode yet?

Hmm, that does seem kinda plausible. I will have to check as soon as I check Modern Family. [livejournal.com profile] sol_se says both her and her family think it's Modern Family, sometime in the last three eps. It sounds promising.

Haven't watched Modern Family, but it's very possible. The more I think about it, the more I think that the metaphor has been used many times over. It's just so applicable to so many film/tv moments that it would be surprising had it NOT been used multiple times.

I just have to go rewatch that movie. Part of the suspense is I get so into his same day that I forget how he gets out every time. :-) I think he kinda doesn't even want to at the end and I kind of never want it to end, either.

I love that he learns to play the piano. :-)

I think that might have been the answer -- he stopped trying?

I was reading some article that says in order to have done all that he did he must have been caught in the loop for at least ten years. And then the director gave an interview in response to the blogger who calculated it and said no, more like 30 lol.

Scary!

Also there's a lot of reading about how the movie is very religious (many different religions) in nature and what his sort of "re-birth" and "redemption" represents. Very interesting stuff.

I remember that reference came up recentlt and I had to explain it to my 16-yr old niece. It was before Xmas Eve. The shows i was watching then were Dollhouse, Better Off Ted, Community, OAS, Being Erica, and the Good Wife. I'll try to rewatch...

Phil has the perfect day, where he helps people and the town genuinely now likes him, ceases the snark and becomes deep and genuine, and doesn't try to have sex (and only just court) his co-worker and gets to know her person and not as a goal.

What's OAS? I need to seriously rewatch everything instead of just skimming. I still haven't found it.

Ooops: OSA, not OAS: "Outerspace Astronauts" -- but the last episode had no reference to it either.

I need to seriously rewatch everything... yikes! well, at least the holiday season there are no new episodes!
