→ Seeker fandom is bleeding all over my flist. Sorry guys. That totally sucks. I never got a chance to watch season two but I dug the show during season one. I know how you must feel. *hugs* So many great shows with awesome female characters have ended over the past couple of TV seasons. I heard that Damages got canceled too. Suck doesn't begin to describe these moments. I feel for you all.
→ I was going to write two more fics for the five acts meme but I really think I burnt myself out. I'd need at least another day and I don't think that'd qualify as sneaking it in under the wire, lol. Oh well, it was fun! I wrote seventeen fics for the thing. 17! We're still collecting links, but the amazing meme runner,
toestastegood, and I have been collecting them all at this here delicious. 319 fics so far, sure to be far more by the end.
→ I had been downloading the episodes nearly every week [except last week] so yesterday I finally decided to start watching The Pacific. I am 3.5 episodes in and really quite enjoying it a whole hell of a lot. Each episode ends and it definitely doesn't feel like an hour has gone by. And I think that's saying something considering that it's a WWII epic. Can't wait to watch the rest and then go read
slybrunette's fic. The show is really pretty -- it makes me want to make icons!! [That never happens anymore.]
→ Still have not watched Treme. I blame HBO for having too much good programming to possibly catch up with in a timely manner.
→ QUESTION: How do you feel about fan-artists [of any variety, iconners, vidders, writers, artists] keeping their items under friends-lock so you have to join their community in order to see their work. I for one feel I have been manipulated every time I have to click that "join" button. So to me it does feel manipulative more than anything. [Not to mention annoying.] I just don't get it. Especially when you're going for a hunt for icons and a large chunk of icon posts advertised at the communities end up being locked. It's possible some of you on my flist have comms like that, so feel free to defend your position at will.
And, on a related, though kind of off-topic note, what about icon/art comms that only display ONE entry per page? That makes me so irritated. There's no opportunity to scroll through and see what pops, what looks pretty, etc. Let your eye catch something interesting as you look down the page. It makes the process more time consuming and far less fun than it should be.

Date: 2010-04-27 02:26 am (UTC)Well, except for the Pacific cuz I haven't watched it yet. But I definitely plan to now! :)

Date: 2010-04-27 02:35 am (UTC)You're right, television is not being kind to shows with strong female characters right now. I never watched Seeker, but I'm still mourning Ugly Betty so I can feel your flist's pain. United States of Tara has some wonderful albeit dysfunctional female characters, so that's usually where I get my awesome ladies fix these days.
I hate when I have to join a comm just to see the icons. I usually refuse unless I really love the preview. The practice seems a bit silly to me.

Date: 2010-04-27 02:46 am (UTC)I hate when people flock their art. I don't see a reason for it. It's like, why, so you can see just how many people care enough to read? Does it really matter that much? I don't get it at all.
Ditto on the one entry. The frak?

Date: 2010-04-27 03:02 am (UTC)Friends-locked art comms don't get my traffic, simple as that. Maybe, maybe they would if I'd seen something of theirs that was truly rock-awesome and I needed more, but nothing's overcome my unwillingness yet! I won't friend randos just of icons or something, either -- I track the public stuff or I move along.
Single-entry displays are something I don't often come across, but I don't think it bugs? I tend to search by tag or go entry-by-entry anyway...

Date: 2010-04-27 03:19 am (UTC)Yeah I am completely bummed about Betty in a way I can't really describe. Because my parents were avid watchers I've watched on and off for all four years but I didn't really become a regular viewer until last season for some reason, at which point I re-watched all three seasons. Anyway, I feel the thing that strikes me about Betty the show, Betty the character, and what she stands for, is that she is, and the show was, just remarkable. Simply the diversity represented, the fact that most of the major characters were female or gay, etc. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. For a show that was really just a bunch of quirk, I think it was something important. The fact that existed was important. And now it's gone.
Oh, *sniffle*

Date: 2010-04-27 03:24 am (UTC)I really really don't like to join them. And half the time I do it's out of desperation and then I almost immediately leave again. Unless it's a comm with a LOT of makers then maybe I will stay because it's not just ONE person's vanity that I'm stroking. ICK. The whole thing is just ICK.
Well I guess it bugs especially if I've seen a particular icon credited to them and I'm trying to find the entry because I want to tell them it's great OR because I want to see what other icons were in that particular batch. It would be nice to be able to click on a show's tag, and then scroll through a page and find things more easily -- or based on previews "guess" which entry it is that I'm looking for. But even if I'm just trying to get a sense of an artist's work, it's limiting in that sense too. IDK, it does bug me, but lots of things bug me.

Date: 2010-04-27 07:44 am (UTC)I HATE that so-fucking-much. I mean, what's the point? I like to scroll down and do that too, it's just-so-freaking-unnerving.
About the friends-locked arts communities, I generally agree with you that it doesn't have much of a point and that I'd like to join a comm if I want to, not just to see how the icons are. Though I've ended up in some where the maker ended up making them locked because they kept on being hotlinked each month (meaning, getting their bandwidth eaten up in six days more than once) and in that case considering how unnerving it felt the one time it happened to me I can sort of see why they'd think it was a solution. But if you do that just because you don't want people to steal icons or crediting or stuff then imo it's pointless because it'll happen anyway and tbh I think that if you make icons you do that to share them, which does make locking pretty much pointless. So yeah, I generally don't get it unless it's a case of continuous hotlinking.

Date: 2010-04-27 01:10 pm (UTC)17!!! that is so awesome. and I went to have a look at the delicious account, it's fantastic. thanks so much for the hard work!
When an artist asks me to join in order to see, I say "too bad!" and go elsewhere. it annoys me to no end. and gah, yes, communities with one entry are not convivial at all. ohhh, I wonder if ?style=mine would work for that? damn. now I'd like to find one and try!

Date: 2010-04-27 04:12 pm (UTC)THANK GOD I am not the only one that is bothered by this.
I think more people should post about their discontent with these two trends -- maybe they will stop doing it!

Date: 2010-04-27 04:16 pm (UTC)And yeah I can see where someone might be trying to protect themselves from hotlinking, especially if they use a free account like photobucket. But I said above that it seems more like a trend that people have bought into rather than a reactionary measure to protect their bandwidth. I'm sure the bandwidth thing happens though, but maybe more like 10% of the time. lol.

Date: 2010-04-27 04:18 pm (UTC)I guess if they are one of the only, or one of the few, icon makers that make your fandom -- then you'd really have no choice, would you? LOL. But it still feels manipulative.
Right? I hate that, WAY TOO MUCH CLICKING. No way to browse at all. Just. UGH. So annoying.

Date: 2010-04-27 04:20 pm (UTC)Yeah we still have to collect the rest of what was written after we did the initial collection, but the amount of fic and the amount of fandoms represented is completely awesome!
I'll have to remember ?style=mine for next time. Seriously.

Date: 2010-04-27 09:18 pm (UTC)Locked arts posts are frustrating. I believe you can do what you need to in order to protect yourself from plagiarism, but if you're making it difficult for your market/customers to see your work, they (read 'me') aren't going to bother so don't pimp yourself at comms!

Date: 2010-04-27 10:13 pm (UTC)Yeah I agree. I know that some comms have a general "don't link to it if it's a locked post" but artists get around the rule by making the post public for the first 24 hours or for the first 3 days or WHATEVER. But by the time I get to it, it's locked so pooh-pooh on them.
