→ Seeker fandom is bleeding all over my flist. Sorry guys. That totally sucks. I never got a chance to watch season two but I dug the show during season one. I know how you must feel. *hugs* So many great shows with awesome female characters have ended over the past couple of TV seasons. I heard that Damages got canceled too. Suck doesn't begin to describe these moments. I feel for you all.

→ I was going to write two more fics for the five acts meme but I really think I burnt myself out. I'd need at least another day and I don't think that'd qualify as sneaking it in under the wire, lol. Oh well, it was fun! I wrote seventeen fics for the thing. 17! We're still collecting links, but the amazing meme runner, [livejournal.com profile] toestastegood, and I have been collecting them all at this here delicious. 319 fics so far, sure to be far more by the end.

→ I had been downloading the episodes nearly every week [except last week] so yesterday I finally decided to start watching The Pacific. I am 3.5 episodes in and really quite enjoying it a whole hell of a lot. Each episode ends and it definitely doesn't feel like an hour has gone by. And I think that's saying something considering that it's a WWII epic. Can't wait to watch the rest and then go read [livejournal.com profile] slybrunette's fic. The show is really pretty -- it makes me want to make icons!! [That never happens anymore.]

→ Still have not watched Treme. I blame HBO for having too much good programming to possibly catch up with in a timely manner.

→ QUESTION: How do you feel about fan-artists [of any variety, iconners, vidders, writers, artists] keeping their items under friends-lock so you have to join their community in order to see their work. I for one feel I have been manipulated every time I have to click that "join" button. So to me it does feel manipulative more than anything. [Not to mention annoying.] I just don't get it. Especially when you're going for a hunt for icons and a large chunk of icon posts advertised at the communities end up being locked. It's possible some of you on my flist have comms like that, so feel free to defend your position at will.

And, on a related, though kind of off-topic note, what about icon/art comms that only display ONE entry per page? That makes me so irritated. There's no opportunity to scroll through and see what pops, what looks pretty, etc. Let your eye catch something interesting as you look down the page. It makes the process more time consuming and far less fun than it should be.

I'm reading this really interesting article right now about privilege, which seems to be a hot topic every now and then here in fandom. And lately I've seen a bit of chatter about the privilege meme and its meaning/shortcomings/etc. A quick google search brought up a bunch of responses from internet bloggers when the meme was first making its rounds. The reactions were kind of shocking, people angry that someone would consider them privileged for these simple things that they clearly take for granted, others suggesting that if a person didn't have these things it was because they were lazy or just didn't want them. [Thankfully I haven't seen anyone around these parts reacting in this way.]

But my interest was piqued. I feel like I basically understand what privilege is and my own level of privilege and the different ways in which privilege exists and what that all means for those who have it and those who don't, but now I kind of want to learn more. Luckily, one of the benefits of working in a library is that I can research a number of topics whenever it strikes my fancy. And I found lots of info, but the best so far is an article from the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development. I'll type up a quote here, because it kind of illustrates the behavior I was seeing from some of the bloggers, but there's a lot more to it than this little blurb:

Lack of membership in privileged groups was characteristically viewed as a lack of effort. Therefore, the belief was that those denied power, access, or visibility must, by definition, have earned their exclusion and oppression because of some personal defect. This belief is often referred as the "myth of meritocracy" whereby a culture communicates that the oppressed could earn society's privileges if they were just different (e.g., more like the privileged group).

Black, Linda L., and David Stone. "Expanding the Definition of Privilege: The Concept of Social Privilege." Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development Oct. 2005: 243-55.

There are some things in the article that I, well I don't want to say disagree with, but there are some things that I think they could have done differently. But overall it's very enlightening. It's a PDF that I printed out and can't find anywhere online, so I suppose if anyone was that interested I might be willing to type it up.

I guess this entry doesn't really have an overall point, other than remarking that this is an thought-provoking subject.

[livejournal.com profile] princesaskater made a really beautiful (spoilery!) picspam for Harper's Island episode 1.11, Splash. Speaking of Harper's Island, they're skipping July 4th and airing the last two episodes back to back on July 11th on CBS. On wikipedia, it doesn't say when they're airing them on Global TV though so there may be an ep next week and there may not be. I'm thinking of re-watching the series between now and the finale.

→ For two nights in a row this week there was a mockingbird singing outside my window, well past midnight keeping me awake. (SO loud and obnoxious.) Apparently this is the lonely cry of a bachelor mockingbird looking for a mate and there is absolutely no way to discourage them or even scare them away because they are territorial and are likely to sing from the same spot each night. Thankfully, last night there was a big thunderstorm and lots of rain so he was quiet. I'm crossing my fingers he doesn't come back again tonight, but I don't know how truly hopeful I am. Some of the things I read online seem to suggest that they sing by light, so I am half contemplating sabotaging the streetlight that's right outside the house. If I can figure out a way to do that...

→ Everyone seems to be discussing the warnings and triggers wank (meta?) that's been going around. Generally speaking I have not had much need for warnings. They're usually covered in my pairings and ratings. I have written non-con one time (for Sweet Charity) and I warned for it then -- it was my John-in-hell SPN fic -- but I can almost with 100% certainty say I will never write it again, so I don't have to think about warning for those types of things.

The thing I'm pretty firm about though, is death. I have heard some (minimal) discussion about that being one of the warnings people want. But I personally don't warn for it. I may have in the past, but I don't like to and don't plan to in the future. Especially if the death is an important part of the story.

There has been some discussion about how it's "wrong" to compare movies/tv shows and books with fanfiction because we "owe" each other more than that. But imagine seeing Million Dollar Baby, not knowing anything about it, and it came with a "death" warning in front of it? Wouldn't it kind of defeat the whole purpose? I think so. Knowing death is coming would just suck any hope or meaning out of everything preceeding it. Generally, the point isn't death. The point is the life, the struggle, the journey that came before it. But if you tarnish that with a big warning label, it kind of makes it all seem a little pointless right? Maybe that's just me.

Anyway, I don't think I have to worry so much as it seems like people aren't worried so much about death by itself as they are self-harm and suicide. Death by itself seems to be low on the list of trauma-related triggers.

I'm pretty notorious for having the least popular opinions you can have in fandom. I'm not sure why. And it's not as though I'm trying, it just is, you know? It would be far easier for me if this weren't the case. I am this way because Jacob made me this way, by the way.

PROOF

→ I can't bring myself to write and [generally] don't desire to read 80-90% of canon pairings. It's a disease. Which may or may not be contagious. *coughs on you*

I can't help it that I chronically multi-ship. My motto? Make me believe. That is all I ask. [I'm not sure if that part is terribly unpopular.]

→ [I often still enjoy the canon representations of the pairings that I don't read/write in fic.]

→ We've discussed my relationship with Juliet from Lost, yes? Everyone loves her. Me, not so much. [I also had major issues with Charlie, Ben, and Locke.]

→ The same goes for Eric from True Blood. And the Sookie Stackhouse book series. And I'm on book four. I'm pretty sure he's the most popular character next to Sookie herself.

→ Everyone seems to be really liking Glee. Whereas I watched the first half-hour the other day and quit halfway through, call it lack of sleep mixed with lack of interest. Maybe the 2nd half makes up for it?

→ If my phone hadn't died I'd still be voting for Kris Allen. Have I mentioned I don't actually watch the show?

→ I prefer Ronon/Sheppard to McShep. [But I still like McShep!]

→ Misha Collins kind of gives me the heebs. Fine, I said it! [Feel free to use icons of him when you respond to this post, Dayl.]

→ I am sure there's more I can't think of at the moment. How does one pick examples from their perpetual state of being? It all just runs together. I'm damn contrary, okay?

I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] barefoot_chick about shipping and what happens when your favorite fanon pairing suddenly becomes canon. There they are, the special two, just going about their platonic existences, when before you know it, right before your eyes, there's full-on mackage and/or declarations of love, true lustlove!

After all of that writing, reading, discussing, watching, and waiting, having to endure storylines that pull the characters away from each other, or worse, make them completely oblivious to each other, and after all that time spent hoping against all odds, it's finally happened.

You squee, you convulse, you cry, you slap your TV/computer moniter, you jump for joy, you do whatever it is shippers do when your people become... one. (Wow that would be kind of poetic if it weren't so goofy-sounding.)

The question then, becomes: What do you do then? What happens next?

what now, mamacita? )

I probably express these without prompting on a regular basis, hahaha.

I haven't really been paying that much attention to "Situation JubJub," if you will, and I am well aware that I am late to the game. I also know I'm mostly quiet on the fandom front, but I have brains in my head (and feet in my shoes!) and here's a small observation/analysis of the reason everybody is going batshit!crazy.

It's about hero worship. The people arguing? Are in a civil war. (Deep, I know!) There is blood on the streets of Jensenville, ladies and gentlemen. Observe, the factions:

Camp A: These rambunctious folks follow the mindset that they love Jensen, despite his (real or perceived) faults. In fact they think his faults are pretty adorable. Look! Look at his faults! Aren't they stinkin' cute?
Camp B: These lovely citizens also love Jensen, but they do not acknowledge that Jensen has any faults. Look how completely faultless he is! Look! I mean, check the freckles! The hair! The laugh! Oh! Isn't he perfect?

Clearly, Camp A and Camp B both love Jensen to itty bitty Jensen-shaped bits, they simply disagree on how they should love him. Camp B wishes Camp A would just shut the frak up about these so-called faults, because it ruins the illusion of perfection. And Camp A is totally annoyed that Camp B finds anything wrong with breaking the illusion, and loving him despite the fact that he is, in fact, a real person.

I propose a reconciliation of these opposing factions. And I have, thus, re-written Tim Minchin's Peace Anthem for Palestine, in spirit of fandom love.
Peace Anthem for Jensenville

We love Jen-sen.
You love Jen-sen.
It seems it's been that way forever!
So if you love Jen-sen...
And we love Jen-sen...
Why not love Jensen together?

Footnote: I make no assertions or assumptions about whether or not Jensen is actually chubby, or has 762 freckles, or bites the heads off baby chickens in his spare time. Besides, I don't think it's really all that important... well, maybe the chicken thing...

ETA: We mustn't forget Camp C. Innocent bystanders.

001. I was chatting with some folk over at LVI about the differences between Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, and Pushing Daisies, thematically speaking. A term used relatively often, by myself at least, to describe Pushing Daisies, is "cute." And it is cute. And this is not a word most people would use to describe shows like Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls. But when I really really think about it. That is exactly what they were in their own ways. The major difference between the shows (again, thematically) is that the main characters, our moral guideposts of both Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me, are extremely cynical and bitter. (But endearing!) With Pushing Daisies we have The Piemaker, Ned. And his viewpoint, while cautious, is anything but cynical and bitter. It's a little brighter, color-wise, and tone-wise, in that way. But all three shows are quirky good fun.

002. A similarity between those two shows?

Jaye, George, & Chuck

Chicks with boy names. Cute.

003. I have yet to see this week's SPN. A crisis of layout-ical(?) proportions kept me away. But here's some (non-spoilery) thoughts on the new season. So far, I feel like the show may be trying to appeal to a wider audience by upping the dumb humor and the boob-quotient. But maybe that's just my half-assed assumption, or something that will level out as the season progresses. Either way, I'm not sure I like it. Not that I would stop watching for either of these reasons, of course.

004. On another, less negative, note, I love the way they're filming the show this season. Did they get a new DP or something? Maybe it's the vidder in me, but someone tell me I'm not crazy.

005. I was discussing with Sara tonight about what kind of fans we are. And we sort of discovered that we're really very different types of fans. For example, I don't ever really watch a show for one aspect, such as a ship, which she does. I am, by no means saying that there's anything wrong with liking a particular character, or ship. (Please, look at my header and notice a certain blonde that's repeated more than once!) But for me, personally, if I can't enjoy the show as a whole then I can't watch a show period. It has to engage me from all possible facets.

Which, is why, while I'm a total fandom-whore, I've come to the conclusion that I'm kind of a hard sell.

More on this later, maybe, possibly.
