Unpopular Opinions You Didn't Ask For
May. 19th, 2009 10:34 pmI'm pretty notorious for having the least popular opinions you can have in fandom. I'm not sure why. And it's not as though I'm trying, it just is, you know? It would be far easier for me if this weren't the case. I am this way because Jacob made me this way, by the way.
PROOF
→ I can't bring myself to write and [generally] don't desire to read 80-90% of canon pairings. It's a disease. Which may or may not be contagious. *coughs on you*
I can't help it that I chronically multi-ship. My motto? Make me believe. That is all I ask. [I'm not sure if that part is terribly unpopular.]
→ [I often still enjoy the canon representations of the pairings that I don't read/write in fic.]
→ We've discussed my relationship with Juliet from Lost, yes? Everyone loves her. Me, not so much. [I also had major issues with Charlie, Ben, and Locke.]
→ The same goes for Eric from True Blood. And the Sookie Stackhouse book series. And I'm on book four. I'm pretty sure he's the most popular character next to Sookie herself.
→ Everyone seems to be really liking Glee. Whereas I watched the first half-hour the other day and quit halfway through, call it lack of sleep mixed with lack of interest. Maybe the 2nd half makes up for it?
→ If my phone hadn't died I'd still be voting for Kris Allen. Have I mentioned I don't actually watch the show?
→ I prefer Ronon/Sheppard to McShep. [But I still like McShep!]
→ Misha Collins kind of gives me the heebs. Fine, I said it! [Feel free to use icons of him when you respond to this post, Dayl.]
→ I am sure there's more I can't think of at the moment. How does one pick examples from their perpetual state of being? It all just runs together. I'm damn contrary, okay?

And Eric, meh. And Juliet ugh.
Awwwww Ronon and Sheppard ♥ ♥
*USES MY HAPPY HAPPY MISHA ICON BECAUSE YOU SAID I COULDDDD*

Misha is ♥LOVE♥!! The more you know, the more you love him - clearly you've not exposed yourself enough to the sparkly fabulousness that is Misha Collins! Resistance is futile!

Date: 2009-05-20 03:28 am (UTC)I get the feeling a lot of fans watch the show for certain canon pairings and that's the reason they'll start to participate in a particular fandom in the first place. Obviously, this isn't true with most slashers. I have written a little slash but am more comfortable writing het. I read both slash and het so I guess I kind of forgot about your poor slashers. *snuggles you*
He really is, hah. I just feel there's more tension/angst/seriousness to that pairing. But I like them both actually!
I guess if I had any interest in Supernatural at all any more I might feel differently. But as of the moment... hehe.

Date: 2009-05-20 03:49 am (UTC)And yet I love Starbuck. But I feel their characters are complete opposites. Starbuck has much more in common with Sawyer than Juliet.

Date: 2009-05-20 03:45 am (UTC)And I HATE Ben and Locke as well. I was pretty okay with Charlie most of the time though. [MY unpopular opinion: I have a huge problem with Claire! I do not want her back on this show!]
*spams you with the Misha because you said
weDayln could* :D → Okay, I'll admit, he does inspire heebes if you don't really know his work or his personality. :)no subject
Date: 2009-05-20 03:47 am (UTC)Yeah I remember. I obviously disagree with Claire but that is mostly because I fic her. The character on the show has been really poorly treated and I can easily see why anyone could consider her a waste of space and screentime.

Date: 2009-05-20 04:52 am (UTC)I don't love or hate Juliet. She's purely neutral in my book. She's pretty but I always felt she had ulterior motives. Idk.
My favorite character from True Blood is LaFayette. Bitch, you gonna eat my food the way I fucking MAKE IT.
Misha is an odd duck. But I love him for it.
Glee's last 5 minutes are epic! It's such a happy show like Pushing Daisies. It makes me smile. I hope it does well this fall!
I was so conflicted on what icon to use! A Glee icon, SGA, Lost, Castiel or my TB LaFayette icon. :P

Date: 2009-05-20 12:32 pm (UTC)I think those were my feelings for a while but I think I grew more and more frustrated with the level of focus the show (and to some extent the fandom) puts on her). That kind of turned my indifference to rage.

Date: 2009-05-20 12:35 pm (UTC)But what if a show takes a pairing you love that is thoroughly un-canon that you're sure will never ever be canon, and somehow makes it canon, even slightly canon. (Mark/Lexie from Greys, Kara/Leoben from BSG are two of mine.) What do you do then?
My exceptions in fic are most usually these types of couples. The "I shipped it before" type couples.

Date: 2009-05-20 12:00 pm (UTC)I agree about Misha. (And I know first hand how unpopular that particular opinion is. And I've got the scars to prove it.)
As I am mostly a het shipper, (either canon or non-canon, but usually not the lead couple) I know how unusual it is to go against the grain. On that I totally sympathize.
I gave up on Lost long ago, but I actually do like Juliette!

Date: 2009-05-20 12:42 pm (UTC)Scars? Scary. Do tell, I'd like to hear this.
I think BSG, like I was saying to someone above, is the most thoroughly stuck on the main couple/s fandom that I've ever come across. It's really... well pretty frightening. Even liking secondary couples was like a cardinal sin in that fandom in certain places.
Half the reason I never take comment fic is because I'm afraid people are going to ask me for something canon, hahahaha. (The other half is I am suffering writer's block, but that's another story.)

Date: 2009-05-20 12:45 pm (UTC)Honestly... and this is probably going to make me a bad person... I just hope he loses so that he can fade into oblivion and I never have to see his face again. The 3 or 4 times when I've caught a performance of his while my parents were watching downstairs, I have NOT liked it. I don't see the appeal and I don't like his singing (what I've seen of it.)

You know I heart unconventional ships, right? I don't know of anyone else who's as crazy about THE CLAWN as I am, and that's my favorite.

I also didn't hate Kennedy. I don't know why everyone hated her so much. In my opinion it was mostly backlash about Tara. I even put Kennedy in my girlpower vid, heh. Her character (and that relationship) wasn't perfect, but she wasn't deserving of all the hate either.

Date: 2009-05-20 08:38 pm (UTC)Re: Non-Canon. Sure, except I'm not just talking about the Lost fandom.
Lost, especially on livejournal (not necessarily other fannish spaces), has a lot of people who are mutli-ship non-canon writers/readers, which is one of the reasons why I said that probably wasn't that unpopular.
But when you look at other fandoms, for example BSG, being a major one, the fic in that fandom is very canon-centric (except for the femmeslash for some reason). You just have to glance at the newsletter once to see that. (Lee/Kara, or Roslin/Adama down the line almost every time.)
As a fic writer/reader, having absolutely zero interest in writing or reading probably 9 out of 10 canon pairings or more is probably pretty rare. [Unless you're a dedicated slasher, as Mrs.
Re: Glee. Here's a promo. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ea2pMx1lYw) Never seen that one before actually.

Date: 2009-05-20 10:57 pm (UTC)I wish I had stumbled upon more Ronon/sheppard.... I just happened to find McShep writers and read all of their fics (and I'll admit loving it so), but I was never against variety ;)
ahhh, Misha. well I'll keep him if you don't mind. ;)

Date: 2009-05-20 11:47 pm (UTC)But I guess sometimes when I get into a new fandom (or even watch a new episode of an old one) I'm focused on the material and I get ideas about pairings or characters I like or thoughts on certain plotlines and episodes and then when I head into the fandom I'm hoping (not actively entirely) for some kind of... not connection, I'm not sure I know the right word. I just know that when I then go into the fandom and the character everyone loves is the one character I hate, or just in general find that my thoughts on something are in complete opposition to the majority of fandom etc. I think not again. Because it's, like I said, my perpetual state of being, hah.
I will gladly let you! ;)
I swear it is my mission to write some Ronon/Sheppard some day.
