Date: 2008-03-25 11:27 pm (UTC)What the author of that is completely MISSING is that some women choose to use their sexuality to make money and get the things they want. Perhaps Inara(?) chooses this life. I don't know the show or movie or whatever it is and I probably never will, but I have known numerous women who choose this route in life and enjoy it. For
Just my two cents on the little bit of it I could read without rolling my eyes.
ETA: I read some of the comments at the bottom out of morbid curiosity and I found that the one person who was willing to say that they disagreed with her view was indirectly referred to as "pro-prostitution" and was told that all further pro-prostitution comments would be deleted. Apparently

No show, story, man, or woman is perfect. Fact. But, you know? There's a difference between having some concerns and picking out every tiny detail and then Taking! It! Seriously!

And if she sees him as that, DAYUM, she should be praising the show for killing the rapist in the movie!

Date: 2008-03-26 12:55 am (UTC)WTF? That's the most biased piece of crap I've ever had the displeasure to read, and I didn't even make it halfway. Anything's gonna turn out into whatever you want it to be if you pick elements out of context and ignore explanations that are given on the show for them to make your own.

Date: 2008-03-26 01:09 am (UTC)I also find it interesting that feminism is a sexist thing. It's about the female sex. So when a female character chooses to use her sexuality as power... this person gets all up in arms and says she's being raped. Her feminism is empowering, yet this person wants to demean it simply because she doesn't agree with her actions? Yeah, that's horse shit. Feminist... man hater... I guess the line is really fine sometimes.
Bleah... Wish I were more intelligent and had the time, I'd probably write up a counter-essay. LOL

That's so what it comes down to. What about intent? Does any of that matter. What a character wants or chooses, which is often shown to us on screen one way or another, doesn't matter?
She talks about marriage and how the woman cleans up the man's mess, always subservient, but what about mutual emotional support? Can that exist? Just... *speechless*
Counter-essay. I'd try if I thought that the time put into writing it wouldn't be wasted because she's just going to delete what you say. Apparently she has a "comment moderation policy" or some shit.

Date: 2008-03-26 01:12 am (UTC)It's not so much that it's a fairly biased, polarized, narrow view of a subject, because everyone is entitled to that. It's that she isn't giving anyone else a chance to give thier possibly biased, polarized, narrow view of the opposite side.
And I like that she got literal, non-subjective facts wrong. "This bunch of criminals go around stealing things and generally doing lots of violence." Yep, that right there is Firefly. Or... wait a second.
And that some of the people agreeing with her haven't even seen FF.
See, I'm just bored enough with my break right now that I would consider watching the entire series and writing my own series of essays, that maybe like, explore both sides of the arguement. And yes, then do one for BSG. Just cause. (actually, that might even be more interesting, since i have some honest issues with male and female characters on that show, love it as i do).
no subject
Date: 2008-03-26 01:42 am (UTC)Hee! Right? She's basically said that she'll delete your comment if you disagree with her. She doesn't want discussion, she's not interested in exploring other points of view, she's interested in having people agree with her. YAY! Delusion!
I'd like to hear your thoughts on BSG in a separate meta. I generally can't fault it, but then again I have blinders on.

Date: 2008-03-26 02:30 am (UTC)But then I read further and saw her definition of rape. Ah. Essentially, any sex between a man and a woman is rape. Of course. No woman could actually enjoy having sex with a man, right? Coercion is the only explanation. Uh huh.
Apparently she hates men something fierce and wishes she lived on some kind of Amazon planet. Which is fine. As long as I don't have to live there with her.

Date: 2008-03-26 02:46 am (UTC)Yeah that's pretty much the thing that shocked me the most. I mean, seriously, have opinions about a show, but don't call its creator a rapist based on the themes that you choose to see that are held therein.
