On Community:
I have to say I'm on the "not as good as last year" train. I think there were a few episodes last season where they would go super heavy on the schtick. The over-the-top characters, the almost-but-not-quite gross-out stuff. The over-the-top everything pretty much. It felt as though there were "regular episodes" and then there were stylized episodes where it wasn't over the top (that felt like regular episodes to me) and then there were just the ridiculous, silly episodes that had no boundaries. I gotta say I didn't really like those episodes. And this season for the most part feels like it's leaning extremely heavily in that direction and it makes me sad.
Even this last episode, while funny and I liked it over all, was almost too much for me. I think
lenina20 said, it almost missed the mark and I definitely agree.
And I'll tell you what I really don't like. Chang. Some people were saying he was better in this episode but I am just so, so sick of him. He wasn't all that funny to me last season as a character. What was funny about it was that he was completely ridiculous. And it's just not as funny when you're ridiculous all the time. And Shirley? Um, no. That was not on. Especially the fact that he called Troy to leave a time capsule voice message BRAGGING ABOUT IT. I think I hate the character now more than ever. I didn't know that was possible. I can handle him in small doses, but this is just too much.
They're going there with the dean as well. He's a heck of a lot more likable than Chang but at times it does get a little silly in the not-funny-anymore way.
I just kind of miss these characters. I feel like we don't really know them anymore. And do they ever go to any other classes? It's just veering off in a direction that I do not like.
I think Community, as a show, is sometimes like a kid who does something funny in front of his parents or his parents friends. Of course, we laugh because it's funny. So the kid gets excited that they've done a good job and so they do it AGAIN, and LOUDER, and with MORE EMPHASIS. And then they do that over and over and over and I'm just like "STOP ALREADY!"
When it's good it's good. When it's bad, it's just sad. Because it can be really good.

But yeah, word to this. Big time.

Date: 2010-10-30 02:03 pm (UTC)You're right. I miss these characters is my bigger complant. Every motivation they seemed to had last year (and this is especially true in cases of shipping) is just gone and in the horrible way of being meta about it just to try and justify it. This is Hurley asking about time travel all over again. Dear writers, don't think we won't notice if you're trying to actively convince us that your decision don't suck because you know they do. Please. We're not that stupid.
Sigh. With some luck, once they get tired of trying to prove some point, they'll star writing a sitcome again.
