when the world is over, mitchell and annie remain.

(of course they do but—

—the scary part: they’re not the only ones.

they were never two of a kind.)

when the world is over, the remains are dark and violent and cold despite the brightness.

annie drives (because she can) and michell wears sunglasses because the desert light hurts his eyes. sometimes they speak, sometimes they speak nonstop, but they rarely speak what’s on their mind. sometimes only, when annie is tired and says she needs to rest for a while, and “i never though i’d be this far away from home.”

(there is no home anymore; the desert is everywhere, and in the open it feels safer.)

“maybe the world hasn’t ended,” mitchell says.

annie nods, used to it, and looks away—but lets her fingers find his, because he can touch her, and that helps, feeling okay. she doesn’t speak, though, and she tries not to listen, either.

“maybe we’ve just been here too long, and we’ve forgotten all the thousands of years in between.”

in between now and then, in between now and george, now and feeling human and feeling alive. then was never before they died.

he squeezes her hand. “maybe it’s better this way.”

when the world is over, the remains are dark and scary and violent.

mitchell and annie drive, hide in plain sight, wait for the sun to run out of heat.

(mitchell could leave. anytime he wants.

but he’ll never leave her.)
