There are white lines of damaged skin on her back, her arms, her legs, and every single one is an accusation. Every single line is a time that he wasn't there; it is a sign of his failure.

Simon traces every scar with the tips of his fingers, never daring to press hard, never lingering for more than a split-second. In the wake of his fingers he presses gentle kisses, until River sighs in contentment, and relaxes against his chest. His hand trails over her stomach now, over a deep scar he doesn't recognise, a blast like shrapnel.

"Boom," River whispers, turning her head towards him, twisting so that she can watch as she runs her fingers against his lips. "Sometimes they don't have to shoot you. The scars are all around."

He closes his eyes and feels the ghost of her fingers against his lips. He can't deny her anything; she is his to protect, to surround and comfort. And he belongs to her just as thoroughly - every inch, every line, every scar.

"Mine," River agrees, before she turns to sink against his chest again, her back pressed against him as they lie together. "They gave you to me."

"I've always been yours, River," he reminds her. There was no giving involved. They were born this way.

Together. Bound.

He trails his fingers up and down her bare arms and listens as she hums in contentment. Space speeds by around them, a grand nothingness, and Simon invites it in: he allows it to make them feel small, special, and alone.

Holy crap. I admit that while I do love this pairing it is not always written to my liking but this? This is beyond perfection. (How is this so perfect?) Gah.

This line in particular really struck me:
