Fic Meme: Day 8 - Day 15

kricketsDay 8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
No I don't write OCs. Not generally and definitely not as main characters. I don't really have any interest in reading them in fanfic either, not because I dislike how they're written, but when I'm reading fanfic it's usually to read about a specific pairing or specific characters that I know in canon and in that context, OCs don't interest me.
Day 9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write? (I'll just pick my most-written fandoms for this.)
Vampires: Caroline/Stefan/Tyler, Caroline/Tyler, Caroline/Stefan (a tad redundant, I know)
Lost: Claire/Jack, Claire/Jack/Sawyer, Alex/Richard
Battlestar Galactica: Kara/Leoben, Chief/Sam, and if I got off my ass and wrote them ever, Sam/Ellen Tigh (I write them lots in my head!)
Day 10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?
This has happened a few times, but nothing life-altering. I've definitely written pairings I never thought I would write and it ended up coming very easily to me. Leo/Veronica was one and River/Jayne was another. But single one-shots hardly count, do they?
Day 11 – Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?
I'm pretty addicted to post-apoc type stories and road stories. It's my thing. I can't help myself.
Day 12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?
No. Never.
Day 13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
I think the AU nature of the vast majority of my pairings sort of dictates that I have to stray pretty far from canon. But that's okay. I like it there! And I don't think it's changed the way I see fanon per se... I guess in some ways, especially with Lost, fic was always so much better than the real thing to me. But I kind of have a feeling that would be true even if I was writing canon stories set in mostly canon timelines.
Day 14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
I have written NC-17 though I wouldn't say I'm exactly comfortable with it. I am just not that great at it to tell the truth. As smutty as some of my fic gets, it's probably smuttier in my head. I just can't always bring myself to get too detailed in my descriptions. Haha. It's just easier to be vague because then I don't have to think about it logistically and make it lose all of its magic. Yes, I said magic.
Day 15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?
Can I skip this question? That's how I feel about warnings. I think the weirdest thing I've had to warn for recently was a kind of "sex with violence" thing. Not non-con, not sexual abuse, etc. But I warned for it, because I didn't want people to yell at me if I didn't. I... I am still messed up over it. The only warnings I feel are absolutely necessary are warnings for rape/sexual abuse and warnings for character death. But that last one kills me, honestly. (Should I have warned for that?) I will definitely put any warnings I give to my text in the future in "highlight to read" text. But they still bug me.

Can I just say that I hate having to warn for character death? I totally support warning for noncon/abuse/anything that might be super triggery---aka things I probably wouldn't be writing in the first place, but character death to me should pack some sort of emotional punch and warning for it cushions that. I mean, I'd never lure someone into a fluff piece and then toss Dean in front of a bus, but I've always secretly wished fandom would universally decide to be okay with unannounced character deaths.
The violence warning always gives me headache because I can never decide if it's severe enough to warrant a warning. Like, if someone throws a punch do people want to be warned? Or if a vampire decides to eat a passerby? I usually just say "dark themes" and call it a day.

Date: 2011-07-02 05:44 pm (UTC)Yeah I can't remember if I have always warned for character death or not. Nobody's ever gotten mad so I guess it's okay. Bit yeah character death is something that I would rather not warn for too. For all of the reasons you mentioned.
