So... Jeremy Gilbert.

I'm just kind of coming to terms with the fact that I'm kind of super pissed about his departure, however temporary. The Vampire Diaries has been kind of the bane of my existence this entire season. For numerous reasons, but the major one being, they are fucking with all of my favorite people to write.

Stefan is under coercion at the same time as being compromised by bloodlust, then he's under compulsion, his free will completely taken from him, and now apparently under the revenge!crazy. And while Paul Wesley is apparently the greatest, and is totally hot while doing this all, I barely recognize Stefan. And it kind of kills me.

And I am still very annoyed that the only way the show could manage to make Damon look better is to drag his brother down to his level, and not actually give Damon a chance to redeem himself. (As a Damon fan, I personally would want that.) Stefan keeps saving him on the page, but he's saving him in the subtext as well. And it's all at Stefan's expense. I saw the promos for next week, and I don't think I can ever look at this character the same way again. Except for the fact that when he's sorry for everything he's done - or if? - I am pretty sure I will actually believe it. (Which is different from certain other people, who mostly just feel sorry for themselves.)

Tyler is turned into this mindless JesusKlaus!freak and is automatically deemed a villain by everybody excluding Jeremy, who we'll get to later. I just don't understand how they didn't even bother to try. Clearly this is something that vampires use to have to deal with and have overcome. So why does Tyler get the brushoff? (And I'm not just talking the characters, I mean the writers of this show as well.) They spend half a season trying to "save" Stefan and when Tyler needs a little TLC it's like they can't be bothered. It's annoying. And frustrating. And it just kills me to see another of my favorites completely lose their free will. I don't like it one bit, I guess I'll just RIP OUT MY HEART.

And now we get to Jeremy. I don't know why Elena thought it was a good idea to take away his free will (sensing a theme?) and have Damon compel him again. I'm even pissed at Alaric, perhaps even moreso, for his suggestion to have Jeremy not even think of Mystic Falls. If it's such a good idea to leave MF then why isn't everyone going? And why is Jeremy special? He's not the only one who can be hurt by Klaus. In fact, now that he's gone he could easily just focus his efforts on someone else. I have not always been happy with Jeremy's storylines. He's kind of lived in that area where he is sometimes rendered a useless background character. But what I have always liked about him is that he has always kind of done his own thing. It makes total sense that he was trying to be on Tyler's side when everyone else had given up on him. It makes absolute sense for Jeremy's character. And not just because he might secretly be in love with Tyler, but because that's just who Jeremy Gilbert is. So basically what I'm saying is that it will also make total sense when Jeremy somehow beats the compulsion (which is a thing that people do now), goes to some tough-guy Denver training camp, and comes back to beat the living snot out of everyone in Mystic Falls. (S'all I'm saying! BE WARNED.)

And then, last but not least. We have Caroline. Caroline who? You ask. GOOD QUESTION. She's been so back-burnered that it actually hurts.

So there you have it, all of the characters I've written most often, all pretty much fucking destroyed. NO WONDER I'M LOVING THIS SEASON. (And I wish I could say, "at least I still have Katherine" but I can't, because she's not even hanging out with Stefan having sexytimes and stuff. Which is just unacceptable!)

I have a massive problem with the canon on this show. Meaning, I can't make myself completely ignore it the way I've done with other fandoms (like my Lost fic, as a shining example of how to give a big FU to the canon). So all of this just makes it that much harder for me to write around it. And I'm bitter. And angry. AND I HATE EVERYONE. OKAY?

Everything you said, PLUS this one spoiler about Klaus is driving me NUTS.

The stuff with making Stefan just as bad Damon to make Damon look "better" is EXACTLY what I've been afraid they were going to do since last spring. I'm not Damon's biggest fan to begin with, but if I were a Delena fan, I'd be really upset that they're not giving the character a true redemption that comes from within himself.

At least with Jeremy, they've gone from saying the character that they'll be getting rid of is leaving forever because they can't figure out how to plot for him at the moment to "he'll be back!" (I get the feeling they're jerking us around either way.)

What Klaus spoiler?

I actually forgot to mention in my post at how disgusted I am that they brought in a random love interest for Alaric and like... actually expected us to care? I mean... what? There are TOO MANY PEOPLE ON THIS SHOW ALREADY. Although, she's a Fell which just makes me think she's not all that she appears to be. But really? This is not the time! (Especially because I personally could do with a lot less Alaric, seeing as it tends to take time away from other characters - Katherine, Caroline, Bonnie, ELIJAH, etc. - that I care a lot more about.)

I'd be really upset that they're not giving the character a true redemption that comes from within himself. - THIS! I just... I don't understand. This show is clearly capable of taking characters and giving them a compelling arc. Look at Tyler last season for example. But with Damon they don't even try. They just take the easy way out every damn time. They just don't even bother it seems. Even when he was in the outs for snapping Alaric's neck that last time, he just magically got forgiven after like 2 episodes. It makes no sense!

Yeah well I hope he's back soon. The way that they're talking it seems like he won't be back this season. I mean, they're not just saying "he'll be back" they're saying that McQueen will be "off the show" for a while, but he will be back. Saying OFF THE SHOW just makes it seems like it's going to be more long-term than short-term. I am not happy.

My theory is that they're fridging him temporarily till the originals plot has run its course and they get rid of some of the other extra actors they need for that, assuming that they are trying to save money or something. It does explain why they randomly gave Matt, who's nothing more than a plot device really, Jeremy's one special power. Now they have the ghost-seeing plot device without actually having to plot for the character who provides it. I also suspect they might be trying to streamline the subplots and make everything more centric to the main plot, but that would actually make sense, so I don't know. ;-)

As for Meredith, I think she's supposed to be book!Meredith (Alaric's book canon girlfriend) with a different last name. As to their meeting, I was annoyed that everything significant in that meeting happened offscreen - it would have been a lot more interesting if they'd shown her being worried about his condition and trying to save him, and then Damon saving him with his blood, and Meredith then mystified (sort of what every description of this ep for the past two months implied would happen). But I don't know what they could have cut to make that happen.

And with Klaus, there's a spoiler that he's going to find a love interest this season, and while I'd love for him to do that, a bunch of Klaus/Caroline fans on tumblr think that's confirmation that their ship is going to happen, and the idea just makes me ILL. With Caroline, it would probably be one-sided, but still. DO NOT WANT. (And what about her friendship with Stefan??? *sob*)

Yeah the cast is so bloated that it makes a small amount of sense but at the same time it still doesn't, haha. Like, how about NOT ADD ANY MORE EXTRA CAST MEMBERS if at all possible? How about that? Novel idea, I know. They have plenty of material to work with. And I'm pretty sure they're adding at least 2 more characters soon (based on stuff I've read) not to mention the eventual re-emergence of Elijah and theoretically the rest of the originals.

The way they introduced her just seemed like such a secondary thing. It didn't work at all. Plus, I'm just not down with any new people at this point. Especially considering Jeremy's departure in the same episode.

What? Klaus is going to have a love interest? I hope it's the original Petrova, lol.

I'm guessing it's Bonnie's vampire-ex-witch-mom. Which would be....interesting. But JoMo himself was giving a serious side-eye to the possibility of his love interest being a member of the current cast (they'd have to forgive him the whole blood sacrifice ritual thing... though they do forgive damon for a lot don't they? *ROFL*), which I think is a good sign/thing, even if the cast *is* getting large.

omygod i can second basically all your thoughts. and i miss katherine like it's not even funny. and i basically don't even recognize elena this season. in the start of the season she's acted recklessly and quite honestly, she was so stupid with some of her "plans" (and this is coming from someone who actually likes elena. most of the time. not much this season clearly), and just the whole "hey! guess what! had an idea! this worked so well last time so let's brainwash jeremy again! cause this is me being a good sister and all :DDDDD" is just. no. and i won't even get started on damon/elena because what the hell. (can't say it wasn't obvious that they were going there, i'm just surprised at the way they did)

Katherine has barely been around this season. She just kind of breezes in and breezes out. It's frustrating not only because she's awesome as hell, but especially considering how much I love the juxtaposition of Nina's work with her versus Elena.

I am SO DONE with characters on this show being brainwashed. It's a trend that just NEEDS to die.

The last spoiler-interview-thing I saw implied that he might not even be gone for a single episode, which is my #2 hope. (#1 being that these family friends in Denver are vampire-hunting friends who figure out he's been compelled and come to raise hell... which would be awesome but is not going to happen) Some of the other lack-of-free-will plotlines I could deal with because they were at least villainous (and I enjoyed troll!Stefan for that one episode, even if I want good Stefan back) even if they were plot-colanders (why did Stefan stop taking vervain?), but this one just makes me see red. Like, seriously Elena? NO JUST NO. All I can think of is Code Geass and how Lelouche beats himself up for compelling his friend "live on," and this is three times worse for one percent the justification...

I am hoping that Tyler manages to break free. But I have a feeling that it'll come at the expense of his life. *sadface* I just feel like he's not going to make it out of here alive.

I feel like I need to just let 5 or so episodes pass and then catch up so that the frustration of the week-to-week is lessened.
