001. Did I mention that I totally LOVE whales? Cause I do.

002. I miss my skateboards. Which is probably one of the dumbest things I've ever said, because I happen to sleep above them every night.

003. Supernatural this week = awesome. The show is on a roll. I am so pleased they have managed to make me happy again. Thank the lord. I really, really enjoyed every bit of this last episode. Lilith is CRAZY SCARY! Ruby still rocks. Etc. etc.

I am bummed about one thing though. Hendrickson died. I don't understand that. Why the hell does Kripke kill everyone? And is the show unintentionally racist? I mean, the three HUMAN foes that the guys have had that lasted for more than ONE episode, Jake, Hedrickson, & Gordon, were all strapping black men, and all three wound up dead. Coincidence, perhaps, but an interesting one none-the-less.

004. Lost this week = mindfuckery. I don't have anything intelligent to offer about it though. Sadly.

005. THIS is amazing/adorable. Linked by [livejournal.com profile] kmousie. I love how at the end he does all the nana-na-nas. *inner glee*

006 I used to get beat up when I was in junior high. A lot. By boys! Don't you fret, I fought back. But I was thinking today, how many people have been in a real fist fight? I mean, we see violence on television and in movies constantly. No doubt we all know what a fight looks like. But how many of you guys have actually been in a real live physical fight? I'm interested to hear about that.

I had a feeling you might say that Trey. Not because you're in any way violent, but because you're a boy! I think girls solve their problems with one another in more devious, emotionally scarring ways, rather than by beating someone up.

I never started the fights, Trey! It was always self-defense! Okay well there was that one time! But he totally deserved it! And you know, he was nice to me every day after that! LMAO.

Funny how that works! Yeah I haven't since junior high. Those were the days right.

I wasn't in this fight, but once, these guys were fighting with each other in the back of the bus and I was in the way. So I crouched down in the floor by my seat but they were still going at it, stepping on my hands, with their boots etc. etc. I shouted at them to "GET OFFA ME!" And I swear it was like out of a movie, they both stopped fighting, looked at me, and said "SHUT UP!" in unison, and kept right on fighting. I think that was the only thing they ever agreed on. Hahah.

03. Dude. I never even thought of that, but you're RIGHT! Weird. What's the dealio Kripke? Huh? huh? I'm so mad Henrickson died (is it HenDrickson or just Henrickson, cuz i always thought it was D-less, but now everyone's puttin D's in their spelling and i just don't know what to think anymore)

04. Dude I still need to watch! Gah!

06. I still can't believe you got beat up. *hugs* that makes me really sad. But I can't say that I've ever been in a fist fight no..now I kinda wanna go out and just beat someone up though. That count?

One fist fight with a really butch girl in fourth grade. She punched me in the stomach and knocked the wind out of me. I'd read the phrase before, but had no idea what it felt like. It felt BAD! It was very weird not being able to take a breath.

So I guess I lost that one. :P I think I did get in one good punch to her mouth before I had to go away and concentrate on learning how to breathe again.

That's pretty much it for me and violence. ;)

It's really disheartening how all my favorite shows treat COCs (Lost, SPN, Heroes). I'm fucking sick of it. There's lots of meta on the subject at metafandom and I have to admit, if I hadn't been reading that I might not have noticed it as much.

I've never been in a fistfight. Slapped a few guys - long ago - but that's the extent of that sort of thing in my experience.

Date: 2008-02-24 12:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com
Yeah it's pretty evident on LOST as well, although I'd say they do a better job of it and it's much more even keeled than SPN. I can't speak for Heroes though, but it seems to be an overwhelming trend.

Ahahaha, I'm sorry. The slapping of guys thing sorta tickled me.

1. I love whales. And basically all animals ever. Especially cute ones that no one else likes like platypuses!
2. I used to have a skateboard. But my sisters and I wouldn't use it in the normal way. I'd sit on it and then either one of them would push me down our street. It was so cool.
3. I'm not seeing the racism. Um, there were innocent white/possibly not white characters in that police station that died, too. Kripke just kills them all off for the hell of it. He has the power to kill any character. He's killed lots of white people, too! Think of the Special Kids! Andy, Ava, that other girl. Various people that the monsters made he had them killed violently. The man likes death. And the episode was awesome.
7. I've never been in a fist fight but sometimes I wish I could. Just so i could be the one who KICKS ASS. Yeah. I'm violent on the inside.

Re: The racism: I don't just mean that characters die. I mean, not counting Bela, (and as far as I remember) the only real HUMAN/NON-SUPERNATURAL villains that have had more than one episode, are black men, and there have been three of them, and incidentally, they have all wound up dead in the end.

(You might count Ava, but I wouldn't because she was only a villain for the second of her two episodes.)

I don't think there was ever any intention to kill off any characters based on if they were black or not. The scripts were written before casting. The character was going to be killed off before they even knew which actor would be playing them.
Maybe it's my blondeness that I don't understand what everyone is on about but I think the casting directors happened to cast each actor that happened to be black in the role they deemed fit for them. It's unfortunate that they happened to be black and new everyone is making a big deal about it. That's what I think. *shrug*

Date: 2008-02-24 01:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com
Ya know? It's not really the fact that they are killed that bugs me the most, or even strikes me the most.

What seems the most racist to me is the fact that they have been essentially (barring bela) the only human/non-supernatural villains cast on the show with recurring roles.

ETA: I wanted to edit to say that I am sure it's most probably unintentional.

From: [identity profile] killmotion.livejournal.com
I do think it's unintentional. I don't see skin color on an actor, I see how well they act. The fact that the actors portrayed by Gordon, Jake, and Henrickson means they they were better at what Kripke wanted for each role than non-blacks. And besides, this show is going strong and will most likely get a fourth season (or there will be major hell to pay)there are plenty of opportune moments for new villains (of any race) to emerge and fuck the boys' shit up.

Date: 2008-02-24 02:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com
While I do agree wholeheartedly that it's unintentional, I also think it shouldn't be ignored.

The fact is that these guys are the only real villains of the human variety, and whether they're cast because they were the best for the part, or whether they set out to cast black actors in these roles, I still see it as a problem.

As far as I'm aware it is pretty normal for casting to require a certain race/ethnicity, not always, but it does happen - I don't know if this is true for Supernatural, and I'm not saying that it is. I would hope that it isn't. But even if casting doesn't call for it, a casting director might already have a certain "type" in mind, which could include race, depending. But, again, I just don't know.

And I don't think it's "zomg!horrible!" Or even that overt. But it's definitely something I've been thinking about.

Luckily I don't think that any of this would have any bearing on whether or not the show will get a new season.

And I don't love the show any less either. It's just something I took note of.

Well, I suppose now I'd like to see what the Kripke, the writers, and casting directors had in mind with the show, its actors and if race was involved. Usually I stay out of fandom things but it makes sense for people to want to know what's really up with all this stuff.

And I would love for her to come back for just one episode. JUST ONE, KRIPKE. I think that'd be so cool. And hopefully she'd be badass and AWESOME and Dean'd be all 'Wow.' And she'd be all 'yeah right, mister.' And walk off into the sunset being AWESOME. And then we could at least feel good and know she's ok and have freakin' closure. I MISS HER, TOO.

Like, I can see it now: they'd run into each other on a hunt and she'd be all shooting a gun and looking hot (and Dean would want to lay her) and the boys would be all 'Wow, Jo. Look at you.' And she'd be all 'Hey * nonchalantly shoots monster type thing behind them* 'K, gotta go! *heads towards car* There's another case next town over. Bye.'. But she has gotten over Dean and become quite th huntress. And now Dean is the one that wants her because she is sultry when she kills. And then they'd work together on the next case, share stories and part ways.

This sounds more like fic...OH WELL. I WANT JO. KICKASS. AWESOME. ONE EPISODE. Is that too much to ask?

Aww, you got beat up? Not cool.

I think I've only been in one actual physical fight in my life. Pretty sure I threw one punch. To this girl's stomach. Yeah. Good times.

Okay, wait, two fights. I got punched in the stomach by this asshole in junior high once. Really, really hard. And I have this distinct memory of standing there (completely unable to breathe) all, "What? Was that supposed to hurt?" Which it did, a lot but I felt the need not to show it. Said asshole is currently in prison. Heh.

I haven't witnessed too many fights, really. I've broken up a couple at work, but they're just kids. Not much more than a scuffle or two. I'd probably run and hide.

Oh, he was pissed. So very pissed. But he's bigger than I am.

I was in one physical fight which took place forever ago, but as it was girl on girl, there was a lot more hair pulling and face scratching than any actual fisticuffs, you know?

ETA: re: racism...Honestly? All the villains have been female or black males, so it seems to me like equal amounts of racism and misogyny, but I also don't necessarily think it's intentional, I think it might be subconscious because women and black men are, in general, those used as "bad guys" in a LOT of movies and TV shows. Sad, but true. I don't think he does it on purpose, but it's there and it's glaring, sometimes :(

Bahahah, hair-pulling. You and Claire? *wink* LOL.

Yeah it's either women or black men. And I'm sort of excluding Bela, because while she does cause them trouble they have also worked with her on a couple of cases. But in the most broad of terms, she falls into the category of "human/non-supernatural villain who's had more than one episode." (And so does Ava, but she was only a villain in one of hers.)

So you take those two away who do you have left that's a human/non-supernatural, that has had an "arc" - more than one ep? Just Jake, Gordon, and Hendrickson by my count.

Which is really kinda sad. The fact that I am usually 100% oblivious to the "race thing" when it comes to my fandoms, and the fact that despite my usual oblivion, I even noticed this? That tells me somethings a bit off here. Whether it's been intentional or not.

No, not Claire lol. A cousin, back in the day, actually. It started out verbal and escalated like WHOA until my mom pulled her off me. Not that I didn't go down swinging, though, but I definitely lost that fight.

Yeah, I don't know, if you're only talking about non-supernatural/human, then yeah, but if you think about it, there are SO few foes on SPN that aren't supernatural beings, it's kind of not really a good gauge on the show as a whole... I'm not saying you're wrong but if you look at ALL the villains on the show, it's far more misogynist than racist. *shrugs* either way, it sucks that it's so blatant.

Date: 2008-02-24 02:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] crickets.livejournal.com
Well I guess the reason I've narrowed it down to that, is because the supernatural creatures/beings/witches/demons, etc. are not representative of "real" people. Whereas the humans are, or should be, anyway.
