...but does anyone know the best way to transfer existing LJ entries over to Dreamwidth? Not that I am super active over here, but I am thinking I should start cross posting over there and though I have transfered things in the past there has been a huge lapse between then and now.

ALSO. If you have a DW or know of anyone I know that has one. Leave the usernames in the comments. We may already be friends over there but I want to make sure I don't forget anybody.

Yeah I was able to do it again. It probably duplicated all of the older entries that I'd already imported before, but that's okay. As long as it got all the most recent ones! I think I'll start crossposting over there too. Makes sense.

You can ask for access from a place in your profile, just like LJ has. Access and subscribing are like where you can subscribe to my journal and/or you can grant me access to read your entries. I got the notification that you did everything correctly.

By far the easiest way to transfer is to use DW's in-house set up. You can migrate all your old posts (including comments!), and as far as I know, if you've already moved them once, they won't move them a second time. For cross-posting, it's easiest to post via DW and have it set up to cross-post directly here. It also lets you set up default commenting preferences so that if you want, you can disable comments on LJ (and there's an optional message alerting people that you've cross-posted).

Thank you for all of that info. I did use their in-house set up for transferring. Not sure if it copied the older entries twice, but if they did that's ok. If I'm bored enough maybe one day I can go back and delete all the duplicates. I think I'll start cross-posting the next time I make an entry. I legitimately don't really know anything about dreamwidth or its fandom culture (if there even is one over there right now). If you've got the skinny on any of it let me know. I think I'll allow comments at both platforms!

Basically, what DW did was split "friend" into two separate functions: "grant access" means that user can see any friends-only (Access List) posts you make; "subscribe" means that you'll see any public entries that person posts on your reading page (as well as any Access List-only posts if they've granted you access). So if you want everything to basically be the same as LJ's system, just subscribe and grant access. But if you don't really want new people to have immediate access to more private/personal posts, you can subscribe but not grant access.

Also, there was an Active User Friending Meme a little while back. It was hosted here on LJ, but there are also DW users who participated. :)
