I'm listening to What I Learned From Television on This American Life and Dan Savage talks about how gay people are/were portrayed on television and how the portrayals are mostly stereotypical. But then he goes on to say: "But was the portrayal of heterosexuals any better? Do real straight people act anything like those crazy-ass breeders on Desperate Housewives? Do real straight people act like the fake straight people on LOST? Does anyone act like the people on LOST?"

It made me giggle. Oh, Lost.

Also, on last week's show, With Great Power... there was a story read by author Shalom Auslander called Waiting for Joe from his book, Beware of God. It was this adorable, sort of theological/philosophical tale about two hamsters, one named Donut and one named Danish, waiting for their human/diety Joe to return and feed them. They totally reminded me of Tough and Cuddles. Liek woah. Maybe when I get home I'll type a short excerpt from it. I'm totally buying the book.

You can listen to the most recent show on the website for free without itunes but I think if you want to listen to any of the older episodes you have to use iTunes I dunno.

By the way, for everyone else's general information you totally can listen to older episodes on there. I guess just not recent ones? Or maybe last week's for some reason? *shrug*

I think there are stereotypes about everyone on a show or movie, no matter if you're gay, straight, black, white or an alien. If there weren't any stereotypes on TV shows then they'd be documentaries.

True the fictional characters are mere representations but I do think that there are some characters and some shows/movies that get beyond that and give us layered, non-stereotypical characters. But yeah I think that was kind of the idea. He goes on to talk about stereotypes of heterosexual young teen boys on tv and how just as he transcended the gay stereotypes of his youth, his son will transcend the heterosexual stereotypes as well.

I have showtime, I'm going to have to see if it's on onDemand, I totally forgot about it last night.

But there are stereotypes on all shows, no matter race, sexual orientation or gender, to what degree--depends on the show, still, I so want to hear that, I'm here late, I may have to slack and listen to it, I've done enough work today. *smile*

I love the host. He talks about how much he loved the OC in this ep. It's great.

I actually didn't know until I listened to this episode that they have a TV show now. I may see about getting the DVD of the first season.

I heard it for a the first time a few years ago, an episode called House on Loon Lake. It was awesome and ever since then periodically I'll give it a listen. I love the way they tell the stories and what they're about. I mean, they're about some deeper thing like guilt a person faces, or choices they had to make rather than the sensationalized stories you hear on the news. I'm very interested in seeing the show.

lol, I love the Lost reference. Sadly, he's right. Or maybe that's for the better.

I <3 Dan Savage so much. He's so awesomely hilarious to listen to, but at the same time, so smart and has such a good head on his shoulders. I tell everyone I know to read his columns and listen to his shows because they'll either get some great advice OR hear a great story.

I really enjoyed his piece. He's a good storyteller for sure. I've heard the name before but I think this is really my only exposure to him. I'll have to keep my eye out.
