It was way better than the latest promo for it made it seem. I think I caught the tail end of a promo some weeks ago and was far less impressed by that than the first promo I'd seen for it and so I began to doubt whether or not I'd like it. But I was pleasantly surprised.
Before we started watching it my mom goes "are they good walking dead or bad walking dead?" I honestly didn't know how to answer that. It felt like a trick question.
Zombies are very very bad! Run!
I think the thing that made it good was focusing on the survivors. Rather than the situation. I mean obviously it focused on that as well but zombie movies can sometimes be all about the zombies which I was afraid this would be but it clearly wasn't in the end.
Plus it had Lennie James in it, which I either didn't know or had forgotten about and I love him and he has the best fake American accent. I hope we see his character again.
My mother even liked it -- she actually spoke actual words about the show after it was over! Which, if you knew my mom, you would know is highly unusual. Half the time when we're done watching something, if I ask her if she liked it she just kind of scoffs at me for asking such a silly question and goes "I don't know." But she was a fan of both Jericho and Prison Break so it's got some of her alums in it to draw her in.
I also have grown to appreciate Jon Bernthal even though I've only seen him in supporting roles. (He was in the Pacific and in Eastwick.)
I am looking forward to next week.
If this show does run for a full season will it be 13 episodes? Does anybody know. If you want to know why I'm asking, it's because my mom wants to know how many episodes there will be. I actually cannot believe she even asked the question. That's so unlike her to even care.

Date: 2010-11-02 01:39 am (UTC)So, go Walking Dead. Bringin in the moms!
I really liked that it was a lot more character driven vs situation driven.
I already really dig the little semi love triangle between the cop, his cop friend and his wife lol.
The part with the black guy trying to kill his wife OH MY HEART. I didn't think I could get emotional over zombies lol. I was proven wrong!
That last show was pretty powerful too. Of the ENTIRE city taking over his tank. Craaaazaaaay.
I'm glad you liked it! :D

Date: 2010-11-02 02:06 am (UTC)Yeah his character was not as likable in Eastwick. In the end of that very short-lived series, he turned out not to be that huge of a douche though, so that's good, plus it earns him a recognition factor at least.

Date: 2010-11-02 03:55 am (UTC)The pacing was fantastic and them just focusing on the survivors was great. We're kinda traveling with him and we know as much as he knows. I'm guessing we might learn more about the epidemic as we meet more people who know more, but until then--we're all along for the ride.

Date: 2010-11-02 06:59 am (UTC)Each of the currently 12 volumes (in an ongoing series) includes 6 individual comic book issues, so I'm not surprised they've opted for a six episode season. At least for now. Each volume covers a main story arc, thus making sense to have each season cover one volume. If they're going to stick that close to the story, anyhow. (I know they're adding people that aren't in the books, like Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker's characters, so I would not be at all surprised for some plot points to change.)
The comics are very much character driven - it's more about people's struggle in this new, horrible setting to maintain their own ethics while having to adapt to entirely new rules of life. There's a lot of great characters thanks to the diversity in how people deal with this. In both good and bad ways. Some people have no problem, some people find themselves wavering, and some people go full tilt into chaos. This also makes the story sometimes heart-wrenching, which makes Frank Darabont just perfect for the show - he's not afraid to hank, twist, and even sever the heartstrings.
If the books are anything to go by, we'll be seeing more of Lennie James' character. Hopefully it won't take as long to get back to him as the books do, though.

That's why I ended up liking it. I hope it sticks to that theme!
