Your TVD/GA answer intrigues me (and of course, it's your answer so I'm not saying it's wrong!!!)
I'd have to compare the first three seasons of TVD with the first three seasons of GA. And because I basically think the first three seasons of GA were three of the most flaw-free in the genre, GA wins for me, hands down.
Okay well. I would agree with you if I could erase season 3 from my memory entirely. I actually quit watching GA that season because I was so fed up with it. I can't really pinpoint why but I basically quit mid-season 3 and didn't start back up again until season 5? I went back and watched some of Lexie's early episodes but I still haven't caught up on everything I missed during that time. Although I do know some stuff that happened through the pop culture machine.
I think in general TVD is more exciting and has the benefit of having its own mythology and fun stuff like that. And well? It has a plot? I know that sounds terrible to say but GA has one plot and it's: here are all these surgeons and their complicated/dramatic/sometimes interesting/sometimes not lives. It's personal drama with a little bit of plot every now and then. Whereas the plot of TVD is more of an adventure with personal drama thrown in. If that makes sense? It's so hard to compare them though, because they're two totally different kinds of shows. Obviously, though, GA wins 80% of the time in terms of character depth and dialogue.

I actually appreciate this more than plot most of the time, which is probably what sways me even more strongly in the direction of GA. For example, I can just watch whole scenes of the interns interacting in the cafeteria or at Joe's in the early seasons where basically nothing happens except snark and awesome-ness (and occasionally a hot dog eating competition)!! Haha!
