THE KINGS OF COOL

So... THIS HAPPENED.
I know quite a few of you on my flist have read Savages by Don Winslow. I was pretty much beside myself this week when I learned that the prequel was coming out on Tuesday. Thank you, Don Winslow. I hadn't heard anything about it prior to finding it under the Savages tag at tumblr, so... I guess, because I have to... thank you, tumblr. I'm about a quarter of the way through and so far it is pretty much awesome. Just like Savages. And it is kind of disgusting just how I love Ben, Chon, and O. I'm making myself sick with it.
But I have to tell you a story now. The story is, I'm eating dinner tonight at my favorite sushi bar, minding my own business, reading The Kings of Cool on my kindle, when my regular sushi chef comes up, sticks his head over my shoulder and insists on knowing what I'm reading. I vaguely tell him what it is and what it's about and then one of the regular servers comes over and joins him, and begins, loudly insisting that I should read 50 Shades of Grey and that since "every woman is reading that book right now" I am sure to love it. Huzzuh? At this point, the chef starts backing away slowly and leaves us. I politely tell him, "Thanks, but no thanks. I wouldn't like it."

No. No. Fuck no. Come back when you have some taste.
Sadly, I didn't get the chance.
Truthfully, other than "keep it down, would you?" I wanted to say, "I can and have written better sex scenes." Though, mine suffer from the terrible affliction of way-too-vague, I'm pretty sure I could stand by that statement.
Anyway, the point of this whole post is. If you haven't read Savages? Please do. And if you have read Savages, but didn't know the prequel came out this week: YOU'RE WELCOME.

Date: 2012-06-22 04:30 am (UTC)Haha for your sushi chef story. A friend told me a similar story where her coworker told her she had a book rec "right up her alley." It was 50 Shades, and my friend was pretty much offended and was like, "Excuse me, how do you know what is right up my alley?" Because her coworker was totally wrong. Haha.

Date: 2012-06-22 05:42 am (UTC)My boss, whom I have very little direct contact with usually, and I spent several hours together the other day and for so. much. of it she fair FLAILED about that infernal book. And our relationship is NOT one where I could tell her what I REALLY thought and so, instead, I sat there and nodded my head when I felt it was necessary and quietly demured that I would "have to check it out."
NO CHANCE. And for so. very. many reasons...
I got home and spent most of the evening RAGING about it to my mother! (without the "I've written better porn..." part, but only just!)
I've not heard of the book you're actually reccing in this post, but you can rest assured when I say "I'll have to check it out..." this time, I actually mean it!

Date: 2012-06-22 07:55 pm (UTC)Savages, the original, was actually made into this movie:
Basically it's crime (obviously) and violent and sexy. And it has a totally canon ot3 in it. AND it's got an amazing style and is written in third person present tense.

Date: 2012-06-22 11:23 am (UTC)And LOL 50 Shades. When even non-fannish people are going "LOL IT STARTED AS TWILIGHT FANFICTION," that is my cue to back away as quickly as possible.

Date: 2012-06-22 07:57 pm (UTC)Stylistically, the book hits all my kinks. Short on details, sparse, written in THIRD PERSON PRESENT TENSE. Etc. It reads very much like fanfic. Very experimental.
