what's that say about me?

[livejournal.com profile] ozmissage gave me this meme after lengthy discussions about "what our shipping and character preference say about us." This one's just about characters, maybe I'll alter it and do a "pairings" one later.

List fifteen (or however many) of your favorite characters from different fandoms and ask people to spot patterns in your choices, if they're so inclined.

Not a comprehensive list, more of a sampling.
Duke Crocker, Haven
Gale Hawthorne, The Hunger Games (books)
Stephen Holder, The Killing
Chon McAlister, Savages & Kings of Cool (books)
Sawyer Ford, Lost (pre-season 5, sorry guys)
Kenzi, Lost Girl (picking only one from this fandom was hard... because Tamsin!)
Pacey Witter, Dawson's Creek
Felix, Orphan Black
Topher Brink, Dollhouse
Hanna Marin, Pretty Little Liars
Fiona Gallagher, Shameless US (also a hard choice! because Karen! And Lip! But mostly Karen.)
Clayton "Jonesy" Jones, Carnivale
Brad Colbert, Generation Kill
Buffy Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Veronica Mars, Veronica Mars
Kara Thrace, Battlestar Galactica
Katherine Pierce, The Vampire Diaries
Cristina Yang, Grey's Anatomy
Brian Kinney, Queer as Folk US
Malcolm Reynolds, Firefly

For the record, there were certain fandoms *cough*FridayNightLights*cough* that I just couldn't pick one favorite character. It was just too cruel.

Seven Questions

Swiped from [livejournal.com profile] ozmissage:
Comment to this post letting me know you want to participate, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random.

Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

ozmissage asked me about ot3s - tvd - broody vamps - vidding - etc )

Garfunkel & Oates

Yesterday I discovered the most amazing thing ever. Riki Lindhome (Last House on the Left, an ep of Pushing Daisies & Happy Endings and a billion other gueststar things) & Kate Micucci (Raising Hope) have a comedy/novelty folk band together called Garfunkel & Oates. Observe:

F**k You
And like and lead to like-like, and like-like can lead to loooovvve.

Why Isn't there More Fucking on this Island? (Yes, This is a song about LOST.)
I'd take Sayid and get everything I need. I don't care if he used to have a wife.

This one is actually sweet and sad:

My Apartment's Very Clean Without You
But the thing that makes me sad is the pair of socks you forgot.

And for some current events (occupy):

Save the Rich
Cause if you don't agree, you're a socialist commie.

They even have their stuff available on iTunes. I think I might have to snag some of it.

things

→ This tweet by the Dalai Lama really reminded me of Harry Potter today:
"We must generate courage equal to the size of the difficulties we face."

→ I wrote TVD fic earlier this week and in doing so I realized that I'm having all of this anxiety about writing this fandom right now. Frustrating, but true. Though I do want to write as much as I can handle during the hiatus because I am not sure how the canon is going to effect my writing. (Which is just indicative of how writing this show makes my brain hurt, I usually don't worry about canon at all.)

→ I really want to write Lost fic. Yes. A comfort zone thing, I think. Maybe I will do that soon.

→ I enjoyed the Haven season two premiere. Duke/Nathan forever. That is all. (Oh? And THIS. I love their twitter antics so much.)

→ This is so trippy, yet awesome and beautiful:

→ On the same note, this is very disturbing. NOT EVEN JOKING. (Yet I can't look away!):

→ To end on a high note:

Fanfic Meme Day 16 - Day 22

Day 16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
Hate them. I honestly have pretty much rejected the practice all together. Summaries indicate that your fic has plot, right? Haha.

Day 17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
Titles often come really naturally to me. Often stolen from song lyrics but also often not. But it's like the girl with a curl, when they're good, they're very very good. When they're bad, they're terrible.

Day 18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?
Sometimes there are threads of things that happen in canon that inspire, but often it's songs, or fan art, or prompts, or other fan works, but usually it's just my own twisted thoughts that come from nowhere.

Day 19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?
It just depends. I probably should write them down. But usually I don't. I usually just think about it and then eventually get back to it. Unless I have the time and the drive immediately and then I'll just start writing.

Day 20 –Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?
Oh sure!

Day 21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?
I've written continuations in certain "'verses". My original Claire/Jack/Sawyer being a notable one. I came back to that one over and over. But they were all intended as one-shots that could be read alone or taken as a whole. I'm not sure how well I pulled that off though. Sequels can be good, but living up to what you've written before can be daunting.

Day 22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
I am signed up for the Vampire Diaries one now. It's my very first! *crosses fingers*

Fic Meme: Day 3 - Day 7

Day 3 - For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write? {I'm only doing a few of these!)

Dawson's Creek: I couldn't really tell you. I loved Pacey and Joey but I'm not sure I did a very good job writing them.

The Vampire Diaries: Caroline, Stefan, and Tyler. If it isn't already obvious. I find Tyler the most shippable character on that show so he's actually probably topping this list.

Lost: Jack, Claire, Sawyer... with Alex and Richard bringing up the rear.

Dollhouse: Alpha & Echo (I would totally say Mag and Zone if I'd ever written those characters, LOVE THEM.)

Harper's Island: I don't really have a favorite. Maybe Henry and Shane?

Battlestar Galactica: Kara, Leoben, Sam, Chief... and though I have never written her in fic (a tragedy, yes) I write Ellen Tigh in my brain every day.

Day 4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?
Right now it's Tyler Lockwood from The Vampire Diaries, but I tend to find myself injecting Sawyer or Jack into Lost fics when they're not really in the fic. Claire too, but she's usually the subject of the fics she's in. I can't think of anybody else really.

Day 5 – If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?
I probably subtly insinuated they were sleeping with/had slept with one or more of the characters that the fic was about. Is that bad?

Day 6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
I have no preference whatsoever. I feel like I write male and female characters equally and I enjoy them equally.

Day 7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
I think any time I write a character for the first time this tends to happen. I feel like there are characters that I have written who I only found marginally interesting but after writing them I kind of fall in love with them or fall in love with a pairing. I think Alpha/Echo is a good example of that. Because I didn't have the highest opinion of either of them before writing them, but I ended up loving them. after writing them together. There are other instances where I feel like writing a character hasn't necessarily made me change my opinion on a character, but it's made me appreciate them more. Claire Littleton of Lost and Tyler Lockwood of The Vampire Diaries are good examples of that.

The Shephards

Hey guys, remember this?

[link]

This morning, [livejournal.com profile] slybrunette pointed me to the fanlore article someone wrote up about it. We're immortalized now! It says in the article that it may be the only Lost fan zine. I'm not sure if that's true, but if it is, that's pretty cool. I has a proud! I couldn't help but log in to change Jack's last name, which they had incorrectly listed at "Jack Sawyer" instead of "Jack Shephard." But still, pretty neat! In a month it'll have been a year since it was published. Boggling.

/end random drive-by bragging moment

ETA: I wish I knew how to correct the spelling of "shephards" in the titles. But I was able to add the names of the artists!
