→ Just watched Another Earth. Gorgeous. And it made me cry several times. Loved Brit Marling, and William Mapother was pretty fantastic in it. I enjoy indie dramas because you get the chance to see people in roles they wouldn't necessarily be in. I like seeing the actors get to work with unique and thought-provoking material. With exceptions, this is not what movies are generally about - and it really isn't for everyone. The script was fantastic and broke my heart on several occasions. I appreciated that it did feel like something was actually happening in addition to all of the pathos. The movie Rabbit Hole had similar plot elements to this, right up to the idea of alternate universes and alternate selves. I enjoyed both. God, I miss being a movie nerd.

So, the cosmonaut. He's the first man ever to go into space, right? The Russians beat the Americans. So he goes up in this big space ship, but the only habitable part of it's very small. So the cosmonaut's in there, and he's got this portal window, and he's looking out of it, and he sees the curvature of the earth. For the first time. The first man to ever look at the planet he's from. And he's lost in that moment. And all of a sudden, this strange ticking begins coming out of the dashboard. He rips out the control panel, right? Takes out his tools, trying to find this sound -- trying to stop this sound. But he can't find it. He can't stop it. It keeps going. A few hours into this, it begins to feel like torture. A few days go by with this sound and he knows that this small sound will break him. He'll lose his mind. What's he going to do? He's up in space. Alone. In a space closet! He's got twenty-five days left to go with this sound. So the cosmonaut decides: the only way to save his sanity is to fall in love with this sound. So he closes his eyes and he goes into his imagination, and then he opens them. He doesn't hear a ticking anymore. He hears music. And he spends the remainder of his time sailing through space in total bliss and peace.

→ I have not actually had much to say lately. People (lovely lovely amazing people) wrote me fic and everything and I've just been off in la la land. Lurking and reading books and making shameless vids.

→ Misfits is back. (Yay!) Lost Girl is back. (Not even interested in watching this based on reviews I've read.) And I'm still behind on a lot of TV from last week. Fail boat.

→ I am reading Mindy Kaling's book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) and so far I'm enjoying her tone but I'm barely into it so I can't say much more than that.

→ I love you and I miss you!

→ Just saw this Misfits Season 3 Spoiler )

→ I signed up for a new prompt table at [livejournal.com profile] fc_smorgasbord here. Little known fact about me. Out of all of the prompt tables I've ever signed up for, I've never finished a single one. Not one! That's awful. I feel like such a failure, haha. I may try to add more fandoms to the table later, but for now I've just signed up for lost and the vampire diaries. We'll see how it goes.

→ I have to start my club vivid vid soon. If not yesterday. I haven't been able to work on it because I got the new computer and instead of taking two days to get it all set up like it should have taken me, it's taken me over a week. I think I've finally got it set up, but I am not holding my breath. I have never had so much trouble. And it's not the computer itself, I've just had a bunch of hang-ups, some my own fault and some just totally random things. Today is literally the first time I've woken up and had nothing to install or double-check or fix or augh. (And even saying that, I can think of a couple of things I could install!) Yeah, so today feels like the first day with this computer period. The first day I can just relax and do whatever it is I normally do. Sadly, it's a Sunday and I don't have much faith that I will get much done in a creative sense today. Too many chores and a messy room to boot. Ah, such is life.

→ The Vampire Diaries was back this week! I loved it but at the same time I felt kind of underwhelmed by it, haha. I won't spoil anybody but it's hard to live up to a six week hiatus. I mean, for real? It's April now, the last episode was in February. That's a long damn time to wait for something. spoilery bits )

→ I saw Hanna on Friday! I was super impressed. I won't get into any lengthy reviews but I will say I recommend it to everybody. When I first saw the trailer for this movie I really hoped that it was a book adaptation, but sadly that's not the case. It's a shame cause I think I'd really enjoy reading more about this story, more details and backstory, etc. I wasn't all that impressed with The Chemical Brothers score though, at times it worked and at times it didn't. But it didn't prevent me from enjoying it, which I did, immensely!

Vidding.

I just finished up what is probably the longest vidding hiatus ever. Since finishing that, I've wanted to talk about it because it feels really monumental to me, but now that I'm here I'm not quite sure what to say.

I honestly don't know what kept me from vidding for so long. Only that I hadn't made a full-length vid in years. Years. I did a couple of really tiny mini-vidlets as an experiment last winter with [livejournal.com profile] mistojen, which was something -- but for me, even though I was happy with my work, it didn't really feel like it counted. In the end, the two of us didn't finishing our challenge. I am pretty sure the idea was to do at least two more. I don't remember the deal. Only that she made three and I only made two.

*shame*

I knew I was ready to be back to vidding because I did sign up for festivids this year and I had no doubt in my mind that I was going to be able to complete the project. I had a confidence that I would have never had this time last year and I have no idea where it came from. I pretty much only picked movies from the list of fandoms (for, the less amount of source footage the better) and just knew it would be something I could handle. It was going to be my "welcome back" tour. I had no expectations that I would make another video in the interim, but surprising myself and everyone else, I did.

It was definitely one of those "inspired" moments. Where you just kind of know. I took at least a day or two to think about it before daring to open up Vegas. But I eventually did and in the end came away accomplishing something that I haven't been able to accomplish in years. It feels really good, but I have no delusions about whether or not this will continue. The only thing I know for sure is that I will be finishing my festivids contribution. That's never been a question. But after that? Who knows.

Has anyone else had a hiatus from vidding that's lasted a particularly long time? Or maybe not even vidding. Maybe writing or graphic-making? What kept you away? What brought you back? Was it inspiration or just the right fandom at the right time?

I honestly can't put my finger on the answers to any of that. I think, in the end though, despite whatever kept me from vidding at the start, it was ultimately fear that kept me from coming back to it for so long. Or as J. Smooth once put it, the "little hater." I think I had finally gotten so far away from it that maybe the fear had finally gone.

I'm crossing my finger that it lasts.

Anyway, in case you're interested and if you missed it, here's MY FIRST VID IN THREE YEARS. It's to the E4 UK show Misfits, which is one of my current obsessions.

Tongue Tied, Iwan Rheon

I have too much to talk about. Two new shows I've been watching lately are Misfits and Lost Girl and I'm really loving both of them and I want to talk about them but I feel so weird talking about a show as a whole instead of episode reviews, but I will just have to try because I feel like I haven't been sharing things with you guys and that's unfair and uncool. *nods*

misfits up to 2.05 )

ETA, cause I can:

No idea who made this unfortunately.

...Lost Girl later!

YOU GUYS! I made a vid! A whole, honest-to-goodness, full-length vid! I am so flaily over this fact right now that I can't honestly believe it. First in years. Years! This feels very good.
